I cannot recommend this rental property enough. Our experience was absolutely amazing. My husband and I rented this house for 10 days for our honeymoon. Laura, Gabby and Shayla were fabulous with answering all of my (many) questions so that we knew what to expect upon our arrival to Nicaragua. We rented a private, round trip, shuttle through Iskra Travel from Managua to San Juan Del Sur. They dropped us off at Dollar Rental where we rented our extremely nice truck for the week. Then we headed to the office to meet Shayla. She showed us around town and took us to the fish market, specialty market and Pali grocery store. Shayla then drove us out to the property and told us everything we needed to know about the property and the town. The fish market is exceptional and you can buy fresh Dorado for $3/lb, amazing! We are so grateful for Shayla and her tour, as we would have been lost without her. We ended up cooking most nights because there aren't many good reasons to leave the house. The house is gorgeous with a spectacular view. The house was clean, comfortable and just as pictured on VRBO. There were people who came to clean the pool daily and maintain the plants. We only asked to have the house cleaned once because anything more seemed unnecessary. The house is about a 4 minute drive from the beach and we suggest driving it because it is so much easier, especially with chairs and a surf board! The beach is gorgeous with almost no one on it (doesn't get much better than that). Lunch at Juanita's Kitchen was delicious as was the taco place on Maderas. We did the catamaran sale with Nica Surf and Sail and had a BLAST. We also hired a fishing charter through Hotel Gran Oceano and would highly recommend them. We caught 6 tuna and made fresh ceviche for supper that night. We thoroughly enjoyed having cocktails in the pool and watching the sun set. I want to stress how safe we felt during our trip. We only stayed in town past dark once so we really weren't pushing it. But I read lots of things about how "unsafe" Nicaragua is, etc. and it made me nervous about our trip. We felt totally opposite, safe. Overall, again, I cannot say enough wonderful things about our trip. If you are even half way on the fence about going, DO IT! This is the only trip I have ever taken where I have genuinely missed it since returning home. AMAZING!

Beautiful scenery, relaxing atmosphere, a sparkling pool and a show from the howler monkeys were the highlights of our stay at Casa la Serena. We rented a 4 x 4 for the week and enjoyed the adventure of trips into town and visits to some outstanding beaches. Gabriela gave us a tour around SJDS which helped us immensely is locating the services we required. The home was well equipped and the staff were friendly and respectful. I would definitely recommend this location for anyone looking for some R & R with a twist of out of the ordinary.

We had the most incredible time at Casa La Serena. It was the perfect place to spend our honeymoon. Although it may have been mostly due to the fact that it was rainy season, at times we felt like we were the only people for miles and had this amazing jungle all to ourselves. The home is absolutely stunning and the pool is perfect. We saw so many creatures, spiders (only one scary one who scurried away as quickly as we spotted him), a preying mantis, scorpions, iguanas, geckos, and the monkeys, which were quite eerie to listen to at first. We were worried we might be stuck in thunderstorms the entire week, but everyday was hot, sunny and humid and the torrential rains at night were a welcome break and lovely to fall asleep to. I enjoyed reading The Country Under My Skin while here and came away inspired. We absolutely loved our time here and hope to return. There is so much more of this beautiful country to explore. Although the roads to Casa la Serena were treacherous, it was part of an incredible adventure. It was a surprise to run into Charlie and the architect who designed Balcones in the forest on our hike to Playa Majagual. Lovely to meet them! Muchos gracias & hasta luego!

After a fantastic September week at Casa la Serena, I'm still in denial that it's over! It truly could not have been a more perfect, completely relaxing, gorgeous and special adventure! It was a fun, adventurous, exciting, heartwarming and absolutely stress-free week! I wouldn't change a thing and can't wait to do it again - only next time it will be for much longer than 7 nights. I can't imagine ever being really ready to leave. Gabby and the community staff made it so easy for us to immediately feel welcome and at home. Thanks to you all for the Best Vacation EVER!

What a place! The setting, the creatures, the view...We loved the walk to the closest beach, lovely, quiet beach. Hike back not too bad: 15 minutes was worth it to be rewarded with a beer and a dip in the pool!!! We would recommend lunch or sunset dinner at Morgan´s Rock, fantastic place, hosts and food ($10-15 for main). Had a lovely chilled day out on the catamaran! Got a nice sunset too. Zip wire is an ace! Oh and banana bread from the bakery Pan de Vida in San Juan del Sur. The monkeys visited our tree every day, so cute. Loved watching them find different routes, especially the little ones. So much to say! Friendly staff kept the place clean and made us feel safe. We´ll never forget this place, an amazing chilled out holiday with lovely sunsets every night. Don´t forget to buy rum in town for sunset cocktails with juice and lime. Thank you to all the staff and Gabriela.

Casa La Serena truly is a peaceful place to relax and savor the peaceful beauty of the Nicaraguan coast. Except for the hairy neighbors who dragged by every day to enjoy the berries of the magnificent tree in the courtyard, we felt like we had the countryside to ourselves. The house is well appointed and met all our needs. Though there is little reason to leave this tranquil spot other than swim in the beautiful beaches, we particularly enjoyed the sail with Nica Sailing (Zac) and the scenery high up in the canopy on Da Flying Frog Zip Line was also great fun. My favorite moments at the house weere spent on the deck reading "The Country under my Skin". What a remarkable story. Muchas gracias por todo.

Just finished our month long honeymoon in Casa La Serena and are sad to leave. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back. The quiet peaceful serenity of Casa La Serena helped make this a nice relaxing vacation which was exactly what we wanted. All the staff of the house were great and were always there to help with whatever we needed. We will be recommending this place to others who are looking to unwind.

We had a great stay here and enjoyed relaxing, soaking up the gorgeous views and also exploring on the nearby roads and beaches! The house couldn't have been better...all the staff, the pool, the oper air concept, the crabs and, of course, the monkeys in the trees! Casa La Serena was the perfect place to come for the first half of our honeymoon and we hope to come back!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: We are a couple of writers who love nature and Nicaragua. We fell in love with Balcones and Casa La Serena for its unique architecture and the feeling of being in our own private paradise. We live in Los Angeles but travel to Nicaragua frequently.

Why the Owner Chose San Juan Del Sur:
We fell in love with the house and the access to several of the most amazing beaches in the area.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Casa La Serena is an oasis, a place of quiet and lush beauty. It is open to the sea breeze and built in such a way that one can have both privacy and community. The bathrooms are beautifully made with unique features and the entire house is a showcase for the magnificence of Nicaraguan wood. Balconies open to the dazzling ocean view, a pool to watch the sunset from are some of the joys this house has to offer.
