Our house is in the heart of the Medieval Quarter of Viterbo, one of the most perfectly preserved, walled, medieval cities of Europe.
The house is three stories, with the typical 'proferlo' or exterior stairway leading to the small balcony with a great view over the city and nearby gardens of Paradosso. The upper story is a mezzanine with two single beds and beamed ceiling. The floors are of Italian tiles throughout. The middle floor is the open plan living/sitting/dining area, while the lower floor has the second large bedroom and luxury bathroom
It dates to at least the year 1200 and the walls are built of peperino, a volcanic rock. The area is famous for its spas with healing qualities and was the favored places for the popes to take the waters as in the luxurious 'Terme Dei Pape,' or Baths of the Popes.
Ten minutes outside the city are the wooded hills of Mount Chimini, and Lake Vico. Lake Bolsena is 35 minutes to the North. The Lake is beautiful and perfect for a day trip. There are many interesting hilltop cities on the way, including Montefiascone, whose famous wine, 'Est Est Est', you can tast along the way. You will have a holiday with a difference!
There is a train to Rome every hour which takes about one hour 15 minutes. It is also possible to get the train to Florence or travel to Sienna for the day. The Mediterranean Sea is 30 minutes by car at Tarquinia where there is also a wonderful water park.
The medieval quarter of Viterbo is famous for the antique shops, and craft shops based on the famous 'Via San Pellegrino.' Your house is off this street! The area abounds in Roman and Etruscan archaeological remains and the architecture is truly amazing.
Viterbo is the perfect base for day trips to many parts of Italy. Even the Adriatic coast, or Norcia in the mountains. You have the best of both worlds, the Peace and Quiet of the Medieval Quarter, and all the benefits of a thriving, modern, university city.

We stayed here for two weeks with our two young children. The kids were extremely excited about staying in the loft and we were thrilled with the spacious bedroom and beautilful bathroom in the lower level. The amenities are everything you could ask for. The apartment is definitely in walking distance to shopping and eating and we even happened to stay at a time when a festival was going on in the courtyard down the street. We planned several day trips to Rome, Florence, and Pisa and even found a beautiful beach near Ortebella that took our breathe away and had us returning multiple times. The host of the apartment couldn't have been more helpful in helping us prepare and feel comfortable as we made our first trip abroad. She even tried to point out where the closest grocery stores were located. I could not have had the same experience staying in a hotel! This rates an 11 on a 1 to 10 scale!Owner response: Dear Cassie, Reading your account of your stay makes me smile. I am happy you and your family had such a good experience. Now that you have the travel bug, I am sure there are many more adventures awaiting you. With Best Wishes to you and yours, Sincerely, Sylvia

Dear Sylvia, We are so happy that we were able to stay at your home in Viterbo. It is a beautiful retreat home, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I really loved the CDs you had Listening to Verdi, Mozart and Carmen really made the mood very special. All in all, we know that Viterbo will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our favorite moment was when we sat on the porch area with the chair and table set up and had Asiago cheese and Italian wine. We enjoyed thinking about the surrounding structures and contemplating what it must have been like 700 years ago. It still overwhelms us to think about it today. The condition of the house was great and the air conditioning was amazing. We had a wonderful time in your home. If you would like to use us as a reference, we would be more than happy to provide you with one.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much for letting us stay at your lovely place in Viterbo. What a wonderful location and wonderful way to step back in time! Modern house, fantastic bathtub, all necessary kitchen equipment for making meals. Cafe Schenardi was our daily stop for coffee and reading English newspapers-great gelato too! Your neighbours are friendly and very helpful. I am learning survival Italian. We have had a wonderful time.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We have stayed in this house on 3 occasions now. What has brought me back is that this is one of the few places that I have been to that is absolutely beautiful but not spoilt by crowds of tourists. I love the house too and it is a great alternative to staying in hotel and experiencing this hidden gem like a local. The house is located in the heart of the Medieval walled part of Viterbo but is modern, clean and fully refurbished on the inside. An endless supply of authentic Italian restaurants and amazing little boutiques are within walking distance. The two train stations in Viterbo are within walking distance and I have been on day trips to Florence and Rome (by train). I was delighted to come back here in the evening to a quiet air conditioned house after the noise and throngs of tourists in the city! I would recommend this house for both couples and groups/families.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Dear Felicity, Thank you for your review. I know you love Viterbo and am happy your have had another great holiday. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Regards, Sylvia

I have stayed in this house several times now between 2008 and 2011 and am planning to visit again! The house is beautifully refurbished in the medieval district of Viterbo. The house has everything you need and has easy access to public transport to Rome and Florence. The owner is very helpful and accomadating, and was able to help us through any difficulties we had. Would recommend visiting this beautiful house to anyone!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Dear Paul, Thank you for your helpful review. You are almost like a local now! The house will be ready for you in October. Best Wishes, Sylvia

While this Flat is absolutely in a beautiful section of Viterbo, this vacation rental nearly ruined our vacation. After a 3 hour flight & a 3 hour train trip on 2 trains to Viterbo….we arrived on Sunday, April 29th only to find the caretaker of the flat had not been informed of our arrival by the owner – They had no idea we were coming. Consequently ,the flat had not been cleaned (there was garbage in the garbage container and old food in the refrigerator from the previous renter) , the dehumidifier had not been turned on (the moldy smell was very apparent in the whole flat but especially strong and damp in the downstairs bedroom) and worst of all,no GAS ( NO HOT water for bathing & NO way to cook). According to the caretaker – the GAS had been turned off by the utility company. We called the owner of the flat and left voice and text messages informing her of the problem – she did not return our calls or text for some time– but when she finally replied – it was only to say she was sorry and she would refund our money. We were left standing in the streets of Viterbo with no place to spend the night…. The weekend we arrived was the May Day holiday weekend – the caretaker informed us it was a very busy holiday week in Italy, and it was highly unlikely we would find a hotel or B&B with rooms available in Viterbo – however, the caretaker of the flat made a number of calls on our behalf, and was very helpful in finding us 2 small rooms for ONE night only in a local B&B. After spending one night in the B&B we had to pack up and move again. We were then advised by the caretaker, that the GAS would not be turned on, in the flat, until Friday, May 5th - (5 days without Hot Water)this was a disaster! We were forced to stay in the flat for 1 uncomfortable night, May 1st, as we tried to locate other accommodations somewhere in Italy for the balance of our vacation. We were finally able to locate a hotel in another town with 2 rooms available for our group of 4. We left Viterbo at 7am on May 2nd. 2 years ago, we rented a condo in Venice and a flat in Florence through VRBO – both rentals were in great locations/clean and well cared for – but this flat was a huge disappointment. This whole experience cost us an additional 675 Euros for hotel accommodations (over and above the original cost of the Viterbo Flat) & 135 Euros in additional travel expenses (over $ 1,000 USD). After a number of Email’s back and forth, the Owner of the flat did give us a full refund.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/4

4 of us stayed in this great little house for 2 weeks. Was in town to visit my daughter attending the university in viterbo. The house Has everything you need and is located on a picturesque cobble stone street. Easy walk from the train station with lots of great restaurants, cafes and stores near by. Easy to take day trips to Rome, orvieto, Assisi , etc. One tip...don't try to drive within the walled city. Streets are extremely small. Sylvia was a wonderful host. She made sure we had everything we needed. Telephoned us a couple of days after arrival. We enjoyed her house and the ability to walk everywhere and then come back and relax. Great value for the price!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Dear Cathryn, Thank you very much for the review. I am delighted you had a great holiday. Sincerely, Sylvia

We stayed three nights in Sylvia's apartment and found it had everything we needed. It is well equipped and comfortable and very clean. Walking down the little street to the front steps was well off the tourist track and we felt like locals. The medieval quarter is fascinating with wonderful architecture, little piazzas and laneways just waiting to be explored. We walked easily all over the town and there are many great resaurants to choose from as well as friendly cafes and delicious bakeries.Sylvia was very helpful with all our enquiries and has a very informative folder with all you need to know for a wonderful stay. We did a day trip to Orvieto and also the incredible old town, Civita di Bagnoregio. Well worth a visit. We definately recommend this apartment and would love to return to explore this area of Italy in the future.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Dear Rod and Melinda, It is great to see you packed so much activity and adventure into your short stay. Whenever you decide to return, you are always welcome. Best Wishes, Sylvia
