About Matt & Holly Marenger

Hello, we are the Marenger's. My wife Holly, and our 6 children have made the Au Train/Munising area our annual destination since the early 2000's. Our love for the northern U.P. and the crisp, clean waters of Lake superior eventually led us to the vacation rental business. We live south of the Munising area and operate our sporting goods store that we opened in 1985 when we were nothing more than high school sweethearts. We also own and operate a drive thru coffee shop there as well, however, thirty some years, six kids and a grandson later, we decided that our hearts are with making memories, Thus, we are now in the vacation rental business. Our hope is to provide properties that fit the needs of large families, or groups seeking to enjoy the presence of each other in the most peaceful, beautiful settings possible.

Why Matt & Holly Marenger chose Au Train

There is no property like this absolutely perfect piece of land. Our gorgeous Hiawatha Log home is meticulously maintained and positioned on a pristine piece of sand beach on Lake Superior.

What makes this lodge unique

Many benefits come with this rental, our favorite is the perfect private sand beach, as well as the modern rustic atmosphere inside the lodge. Lake side fire pit, beautiful gazebo overhanging lake superior shore line, board walk paths throughout the property, private sitting areas along the lake shore, all new mattresses, linens and bedding for your cozy night sleep.

Perfect Wedding Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We rented this spot for a weekend wedding retreat. The lodge accommodated two extended families to spend the weekend together and celebrate. We had a small ceremony on the gazebo overlooking Lake Superior. Beautiful location with all the amenities and a private beach. Highly recommended!

Amazing Week on Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful. Unforgettable. Charming. Pinewood Lodge was everything its advertised to be and more! It was the perfect space for a few families to stay! We were able to spend tons of time together, but have our own spaces when we needed a break! We each had a comfy bed, and our little 2 year old even had her own darling toddler sized bed! The house was gorgeous and clean. There were huge tables to play cards, 2 kitchens, and tv's scattered through out the house. The owners were so thoughtful with the amenities in the rooms-- nightlights through out, fans, extra bedding and plenty of towels. The location is picturesque, and convenient-- an easy trip to Munising or Marquette and close to the boat tours, kayaking Au Train and the Hiawatha National Forest. There's even a place right down the street to pick blueberries! We loved our week-- thanks to Matt & Holly for such a special place to stay!

WOW just WOW!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

I don't even know where to start! From the minute we walked into the door of the beautiful log home we were amazed. We are a large family that has tremendous difficulty finding lodging for our family vacations. Our children/grand children (and spouses) range in ages 26 to 10 so finding enough privacy and space for this family to be comfortable can be challenging. This time was different! When we saw this home come up in the early spring to rent, even before the renovations were complete we knew this was the place for us. During the different stages of the remodel, the owners sent us updates and photos of the lodge, almost immediately answered every question we had (and there was a lot of them!) The place was immaculately clean, and very well equipped with everything we needed (even down to the smallest details like foil, zip locks, sun screen, spices and so on). All the rooms were decorated in the same modern rustic theme, and the beds were extremely comfortable. Brand new adorable rustic furniture, window seats in a couple of the bedrooms that are bigger than a twin size bed (truthfully the little ones preferred to sleep there than the beds). Now for the outside... what a piece of property! Right on Lake superior, the beach was very clean and all sand, not a rock to be found out there. Our sons brought their guitars, played and sang around the camp fire every night. We rented a couple of their paddle boards and kayaks that they keep right at the lodge and played in the water all day. In the evening we walked around the beautiful property checking out all the flower gardens and sat in the gazebo and watched the thunder storm come in. Even though there is so much to see in Munising, I have to say our favorite part was being able to come back to this place every night! Matt & Holly were such wonderful hosts and made sure we had the very best vacation ever!

Unforgettable family week on Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

Pinewood Lodge is everything it's advertised as and more! We are a family of families (28 altogether!), and all of us had a comfortable bed and a not too crowded bath! The house is stunning and clean - brand new gorgeous furniture, full amenity kitchens, indoor space for all of us to gather comfortably and outdoor space large enough for us all to find our own private reading nook. Game time could take place on any of 6 perfect tables throughout the house and deck - as well as accommodate us all for our meals. The lake and beach were gorgeous - if a bit chilly - but by midweek, we were full on swimming in Lake Superior. We were so lucky with perfect weather, and moved the whole crew and volleyball net a mile down the road to the large beach by the river for a great day of sand and sun. We didn't need heat or air, but the space packs and generator were at the ready. Kudos to owners Matt and Holly for thinking of even the littlest details - nightlights throughout, fans in every bedroom, linens galore - and they were so helpful in all the requests that can come from such a large group. Being smack in the middle of the Hiawatha National Forest filled our lungs with clean air, and we saw all sorts of bald eagles and other wildlife, so we thought the 25 minute drive to the grocery store was more of a wildlife safari. Our time in Pictured Rocks was exhilarating - whether kayaking along 200 foot cliffs, hiking the plentiful trails (we saw a black bear!), or taking a sunset cruise along the rocks. We hit three different golf courses, three different pastie places and I brought home 4 pounds of just caught Whitefish from the Munising fishmongers. All of my family said this is definitely a repeat house. This was "vacation" in the truest sense!
