About the property

Spacious & Airy 3BR/3BA sleeps 9+! Near marina! Fireplace! Hot-tub! Wifi! PetsOK

For detailed info on the house, the area and our 'Specials,' click "View More' and scroll down.

Though the big wooded lot gives a secluded feel to this light and airy A-frame, it's only a ten to fifteen minute drive from here to good restaurants and just a short walk to the Waterfront on Lake Oconee Marina. You'll find much to do here all year round. From the back porch, enjoy the quiet sunrise over the lake with your morning coffee. Catch the WOW views and boats occasionally going by from our gazebo's 'back porch' swing. Nature lovers may like our visiting ospreys, herons, egrets and the occasional beaver. There's a sandy 'beach box' with stairs into the water and the glider on our private dock is a favorite roost for sunbathers and evening sunset watchers. Paddle our canoe to a nearby cove. If its warm, swim, float, fish, boat or picnic. When the weather gets cooler, our fireplace and semi-enclosed hot tub add to the 'cabin in the woods' feel. Cable HDTV and WiFi are provided. Guests of all descriptions and their well-behaved pets are most welcome!

Please note: our electric boat lift was hit by a severe storm and it is currently unavailable. But there are cleats to tie up on the dock and the water there is always 5'-6' deep.

IN THE AREA

As mentioned, the Waterfront on Lake Oconee Marina and its public boat ramp are only a short walk away from the property. You'll find Butt's BBQ for sale there in summer. Rental companies will deliver pontoons, speedboats and jet skis to the marina or you can 'put in' your own boat there. Its a very short ride around the peninsula to our private dock.

Situated halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, Lake Oconee is the perfect place for recreation and relaxation. There is a Native American rock formation called ‘Rock Hawk’ that has hiking trails about a 15-minute drive away. Several popular golf courses, an archery range and an equestrian center are in the area, too.

Click the 'map' tab and zoom out or in to see where we're located. Nearby towns, including Eatonton and Greensboro provide local shops, boutiques, antiques, decorative accessories and jewelry. Eatonton was the birthplace of Joel Chandler Harris, known as 'Uncle Remus,' and there is a small museum there. You’ll be a 10-15 minute drive from a wide range of restaurants and shops; about one hour from Sanford Stadium in Athens; and one and a half hours from both downtown Atlanta and the Augusta National Golf Course. In Spring, during Master's Week, many come to Eatonton's half dozen courses to enjoy the event with fellow golf enthusiasts. Some even let the family play at the lake while they drive to Augusta to watch the event up close.

THE INTERIOR

This light-filled A-frame has three bedrooms, one of which is a large open loft with dividing curtains. (See photos.) All three have a full bath next door. There are one king, two queens and three twin beds with high-quality linens. The loft has floor room for a couple of sleeping bags or air mattresses (BYO, but 11 is about the full capacity of the house).

Our kitchen is fully-equipped with a glass-topped electric stove, full oven, refrigerator, toaster ovens, dishwasher, microwave and almost everything you need to cook and serve. There's a dining table for six to eight, a smaller table for four that can double as a desk; a picnic table for another eight to 10 and a folding table, too. On the deck, there is also a small Weber charcoal grill.

Smoking is only allowed on the decks and screened porch that surround three sides of the house. Lots of folding and other chairs make it easy to entertain out there.

OUR APPROACH

At Lakeside Family Retreat, it is not our goal to provide pristine, designer-decorated rooms. We're aiming for a livable, family atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy the spectacular view and the many joys the lake has to offer. Lakeside Family Retreat is perfect for a family vacation or holiday celebration, small birthday party, bible study group, just-the-girl’s getaway, fishing retreat, or golf buddies get-together, etc.

*****SPECIALS and Low Season

Winter (January - February) is our low season. You won't find a mountain cabin for up to nine with a fireplace and hot-tub at such low rates! Why not spend the time by the lake instead? Fill in your dates to the right of the screen and click 'Details' for a quote.

Check our listing often as we do run Last Minute and other Specials. Weeknights are cheaper than weekends all year; and the weekly rate is even better! Ask about longer term rentals if interested. Come be our guests at Lake Oconee! We would love to host you!

About John Martin

Lakeside Family Retreat is owned by John Martin and reservation assistance is provided at times by Gail Farrell, his marketing manager.

John Martin purchased this house in 2010

Why John Martin chose Eatonton

We were so fortunate to find this quiet corner on Lake Oconee that is closer to Atlanta than most other vacation rentals on the lake. It has a real "lake house feel" to it: a private gravel road leading to the house which is surrounded by mature hardwoods; a lot which gently descends to the lake front; beautiful views of the lake from most of the house. Once you're here, you won't want to leave!

What makes this house unique

The Lakeside Family Retreat has a sizeable, wooded lot in a secluded part of the lake that provides a cozy atmosphere, a lovely view, private dock and gentle slope and walk-in access to the lake. The A-frame house is roomy and open with plenty of space for family and friends. You can see the lake from most of the house; stand in the kitchen or sit at the table and watch the kids on the porch. While the house will accommodate a lot of guests, there are plenty of private spaces to have a quiet conversation, such as the gazebo swing and the glider on the dock. The huge screened-in porch with cypress-lined, vaulted ceiling lets you relax and enjoy all the sounds and sights of the lake, even on a rainy day. A number of 'sleepovers' have taken place in our loft and we've appreciated having that third full bath up there as well as the little balcony overlooking the lot. The place has a real "family-feel" and that alone reduces stress. In fall and winter, the fireplace is a nice addition and we keep the hot tub available for another pleasant way to wind down.

Notes:
Formed by the Oconee River and Apalachee Rivers, Lake Oconee is a reservoir with 374 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 19,971 acres. Watersports and boating activities abound. The lake has some very nice golf courses and hotels, but Lakeside Family Retreat is at the edge of a wide and less trafficked area. The property comes with a canoe for two and other boats can be rented nearby. While most activities here revolve around the lake, there are also opportunities for hiking, antiquing, and sightseeing in the scenic, rolling farmland of central Georgia. In winter, the hot tub and fireplace added to the wooded surroundings make the lake house feel like a secluded cabin. But you are still within 10-15 minutes of nice restaurants, including Bone Island Grill, and shops.

The house and setting are very charming. Lots of entertainment and open spaces at the house. Dock is nice, cove is quiet. The owner has thought of everything and our stay was very smooth. I highly recommend it.

Perfect Weekend Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Awesome location for a weekend getaway. We had a ton of fun hanging out by the lake and relaxing on the porch. John, the host, was extremely informative and we had everything we needed while we were there. The canoe was a huge bonus as well, allowing us the opportunity to explore the lake. Highly recommend.

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

The property is wonderful! The house is very comfortable and has all the amenities you need. Super comfortable beds and plenty of space for everyone (we had 3 teenagers and 3 adults). The kitchen is stocked with all the tools you'll need if you want to cook at home; the grill outside was well used by us. The dock was great - we swam, canoed and fished every day. We rented jet skis one day (and had them delivered to the marina around the corner) and rented a boat one day from the marina (great service, super nice people!). There were plenty of floats and games so check out the stock before you buy anything. The property is quiet and the view is amazing. Local restaurants were wonderful - Mellow Mushroom, Da Corrado, Filet Steak and Seafood. Fun day drive to Athens/UGA. The owner, John, communicated before and during our stay and made sure we had everything we needed! We can't wait to go back!!

Complete Relaxation

  • 4 of 5

Perfect lake getaway...kick off your shoes comfy, and everything you needed both in and outside. Beds were very comfortable (always a must for me), baths spacious, kitchen had enough of everything for cooking), and the screen porch was to die for. Swimming was easy right off the dock and even tho we didn’t use the canoe it was nice to know it was there. One extra life jacket would have been nice but not a must-have for us.

It’s in the woods, so expect a few spiders and such. John was great answering all our questions and concerns. We will be repeaters for sure!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time we have stayed at this property in nine months we love it. As I have said before my family have been going to Lake Oconee for years, by fare this is the most relaxing, quite and enjoyable. As long as Mr. Martin lets us rent it we will be going back hopefully soon. Thank You Mr. Martin
