For detailed info on the house, the area and our 'Specials,' click "More Details' and scroll down.

You'll find much to do all year round in this comfortable and airy A-frame. From the back porch, watch the sunrise over the lake with your morning coffee. Enjoy WOW views and boats occasionally going by from our gazebo's 'back porch' swing. Nature lovers may like our visiting ospreys, herons and egrets. You'll find a sandy 'beach box' with stairs into the water and a private dock with cleats where you can tie up a boat. Paddle our canoe to a nearby cove. If its warm, swim, float, fish, boat, sunbathe or picnic. When the weather gets cooler, our fireplace is well-stocked and a semi-enclosed hot tub provides a cozy corner in which to relax and refresh. (Seasonally available.) Cable HDTV and WiFi are provided. Guests of all descriptions and their well-behaved pets are most welcome!

IN THE AREA

The Waterfront on Lake Oconee Marina is only a short walk away. You'll find BBQ there in summer. 'Put in' on their public boat ramp and bring your own boat around to our private dock. Rentals are also available in the area for pontoons, speed boats, jet skis and other craft which can be delivered to the marina.

Situated halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, Lake Oconee is the perfect place for recreation and relaxation. There is a Native American rock formation called ‘Rock Hawk’ that has hiking trails about a 15-minute drive away. Several golf courses, an archery range and an equestrian center are in the area, too.

Click the 'map' tab and zoom out or in to see where we're located. Nearby towns, including Eatonton and Greensboro provide local shops, boutiques, antiques, decorative accessories and jewelry. Eatonton was the birthplace of Joel Chandler Harris, known as 'Uncle Remus,' and there is a small museum there. You’ll be a 10-15 minute drive from a wide range of restaurants and shops; about one hour from Sanford Stadium in Athens; and one and a half hours from both downtown Atlanta and the Augusta National Golf Course. In Spring, during Master's Week, many come to Eatonton's half dozen courses to enjoy the event with fellow golf enthusiasts.

THE INTERIOR

This light-filled A-frame has three bedrooms, one of which is a large open loft with dividing curtains. (See photos.) All three have a full bath next door. There are one king, two queens and three twin beds with high-quality linens. The two small living room couches also convert to two smaller-than-usual single beds (not suitable for adults; let us know if you want to use them). The loft has floor room for a couple of sleeping bags or air mattresses (BYO, but 11 is about the full capacity of the house).

Our kitchen is fully-equipped with a glass-topped electric stove, full oven, refrigerator, toaster ovens, dishwasher, microwave and almost everything you need to cook and serve. There's a dining table for six to eight, a smaller table for four that can double as a desk; a picnic table for another eight to 10 and a folding table, too. On the deck, there is also a small charcoal grill.

Smoking is only allowed on the big wooden decks and screened porch that surround three sides of the house. Lots of folding and other chairs make it easy to entertain out there.

OUR APPROACH

At Lakeside Family Retreat, it is not our goal to provide pristine, designer-decorated rooms. We're aiming for a livable, family atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy the spectacular view and the many joys the lake has to offer. Lakeside Family Retreat is perfect for a family vacation or holiday celebration, small birthday party, bible study group, just-the-girl’s getaway, fishing retreat, or golf buddies get-together, etc.

*****SPECIALS and Low Season

Winter (January - February) is our low season. You won't find a mountain cabin for up to nine with a fireplace and hot-tub at such low rates! Why not spend the time by the lake instead? Fill in your dates to the right of the screen and click 'Details' for a quote.

Check our listing often as we do run Last Minute and other Specials. Weeknights are cheaper than weekends all year; and the weekly rate is even better! Ask about longer term rentals if interested.

Why John Martin chose Eatonton

We were so fortunate to find this quiet corner on Lake Oconee that is closer to Atlanta than most other vacation rentals on the lake. It has a real "lake house feel" to it: a private gravel road leading to the house which is surrounded by mature hardwoods; a lot which gently descends to the lake front; beautiful views of the lake from most of the house. Once you're here, you won't want to leave!

What makes this house unique

The Lakeside Family Retreat has a sizeable, wooded lot in a secluded part of the lake that provides a cozy atmosphere, a lovely view, private dock and gentle slope and walk-in access to the lake. The A-frame house is roomy and open with plenty of space for family and friends. You can see the lake from most of the house; stand in the kitchen or sit at the table and watch the kids on the porch. While the house will accommodate a lot of guests, there are plenty of private spaces to have a quiet conversation, such as the gazebo swing and the glider on the dock. The huge screened-in porch with cypress-lined, vaulted ceiling lets you relax and enjoy all the sounds and sights of the lake, even on a rainy day. A number of 'sleepovers' have taken place in our loft and we've appreciated having that third full bath up there as well as the little balcony overlooking the lot. The place has a real "family-feel" and that alone reduces stress. In fall and winter, the hot tub is available for another pleasant way to wind down.

Notes:
The Waterfront on Oconee Marina is a short walk from the property and it has a public boat ramp where you can 'put in'. The Marina rents boats as does Typhoon Tommy's nearby. Both have jet skis, pontoons, speedboats, etc. Any rental outfit will deliver to that Marina and then you can tie up at the property's private dock after a short boat ride around the peninsula. Water level at our dock is usually about 5'-6' deep. Georgia Power pulls water daily in summer for power generation and that causes about a foot of variation in summer. The property has 1 king, 2 queens and 3 twin beds. In addition, the two small sofas in the Great Room convert into beds that are smaller and shorter than twin size. Not recommended for adults. Please ask if you need sheets for these. It is also possible to take these small mattresses and use them in the floor downstairs or up in the loft. Please put the couches back together in the morning.

Nice view of lake. Needs some updating. Stayed here for golf and Masters Par 3 Tournament. Enjoyed hot tub after walking Augusta National. Need Golf Channel on Direct TV.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback, Hal. We thought it was time for upgrades, too. This week, we had a new hard-surface floor installed throughout the downstairs area. Other improvements are on-going. I hope you will return with your golfing buddies or maybe next time for a family outing. ~John Martin

Love this place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and my brother and his wife rented this house to attend the Monday Practice round at the Masters. Got there a few days early so that we could fish. The house is awesome! It has everything that you would ever need and more! Beds were very comfortable as well. Tons of room. Loved the screened in porch- ate out there every night. The views are fantastic. Fishing was awesome- pulled in lots of catfish, including 2 that were about 8 pounds each. Caught a huge carp. Even though that is a trash fish- it sure put up a fight and was a blast to bring in! Brought in a good size crappie and lost 3 more good size crappie. Can't wait to go back! The only thing that I would change would be on my part and that would have been to stay a few more days. Owner was very responsive and helpful. Highly recommend this place!

Best Getaway House LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is by far our most favorite rental ever! We absolutely loved the house and lake. The weather was freezing but the house was super cozy with a fireplace. Kitchen was well-stocked and the house was very clean. The kids were running through the house and yard screaming, "This place is awesome!" I think so too! The dock and lake were beautiful and we fished and boated despite the weather. The front porch is amazing - and the colored lights are wonderful. Seriously can't say enough about this amazing place. We will be back for sure!

While most activities here revolve around the lake, there are also opportunities for hiking, antiquing, and sightseeing in the scenic, rolling farmland of central Georgia. In winter, the hot tub and fireplace added to the wooded surroundings make the lake house feel like a secluded cabin.
