About Gene Hayes
I was born and raised in Oaxaca, so its food, culture, climate, and traditions are all part of me. I love that place with a passion! After I graduated from High School I attended Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, USA, where I got a Bachelor's degree in Economics with a minor in Mathematics. Later, I obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Marriott School of Business also @ BYU. I have traveled to over 50 countries and Oaxaca still has a very special place in my heart, and I hope that you will fall in love with it too!
Why Gene Hayes chose Centro
My mother's deceased husband originally built this house for his mother so it has a very special place in our hearts.

Location, location, location
This property held 4 people quite comfortably. We loved the fact we could walk pretty much everywhere we wanted to go. The views from the living room and master bedroom are super. We could watch fireworks nightly from the comfort of home.
Dear Ann and Friends, we truly enjoyed hosting you. We are grateful for your review but most importantly for the fact that you had a wonderful stay. Come again. All the best.
Comfortable house in a wonderful town
The house is large and comfortable, cool with an excellent view of the nearby city. Staff was very responsive when minor problems arose.
Old tired house on noisy street
Poorly maintained house with no charm. Close to nice restaurant and shops balcony in rear has nice view of town one shower didn’t work. Ran out of hot water every day. Don’t understand how this place gets 4-5 stars.
Hello David, we are sorry to hear about your experience at Casa Crespo. We do strive to offer great value for a home located in the heart of the city. We are sorry you ran out of hot water, this is the first time we hear about this in over eight years--even when we have hosted large parties. The shower head was replaced as soon as you brought it to our attention. We are proud owners and appreciate feedback that will help improve the property for future guests. Just a few days back, after our last guests left, we a) upgraded the ceiling fan in the dining room, b) cleaned out the cistern and replaced the motor to ensure smooth operation, and c) replaced the additional shower heads to ensure better operation. There is not much we can do about the noise in downtown Oaxaca, unfortunately--but you will agree the location is unbeatable. Thanks.
Wonderful time in Oaxaca
Lots of positives for this rental. The apartment was well laid out and close to everything. Very nice to have a washer and dryer available! Jorge was the best. So friendly and accommodating.. Two of the three shower heads were compromised and Jorge was eager to replace.
While the location made it easy to walk everywhere, it was also very noisy. The street noise was loud most nights and sometimes the neighbors and their dogs. This would not keep me from returning to this apartment as there were too many posititives
Thanks so much for your review, Ginnie. We are glad you found all the positives with the location, hospitality, and accomodations. Yes, most downtown locations will be a bit noisy but nothing that done good earplugs can't fix! We hope to see you again.
Location and comfort.
My wife and I stayed twelve days at Casa Crespo. We found the house was very clean; each bedroom has air conditioning. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook. The Mr. Coffee machine was appreciated. We only had breakfast at the house as there are many good restaurants within walking distance. The Zocalo (city centre) was only a ten minute walk and if you want you could hail a cab right outside the front door. The high speed WiFi was as advertised. There is also a wonderful small Mercado two blocks away that has everything you would need.
As mentioned by many before, there is a noise issue. Calle Crespo is a main thorough fare (right out front), so the two front bedrooms are subject to the road noise. There are three bathrooms with a shower each. Only one had enough water pressure (calcium build up). Note, the showers are small and a "plus size" person could have issues getting in and out.
Overall we were very happy at Casa Crespo.
Robert, thanks for the review. I am glad you had a good time at Casa Crespo and that you found the location, as well as many of the advertised features, convenient and realistic. I hope you had great Oaxacan food and enjoyed your stay.
As you know, there is not much we can do about the noisy street (hopefully the views and the closeness to the Zocalo offset that a little bit); however, we will address the calcium build up in the shower heads. ¡Un abrazo!
The Best Place to be in the Heart of Oaxaca Downtown
I stayed in Oaxaca for 2 weeks. Luckily, I found this marvelous home in the Heart of Oaxaca. It is convenient to everything. I can walk to the Central Park (El Lazaro) in 15 minutes, to the Churches, Museum, Coffee shops, restaurants, Park, Botanic Garden, point look out, anything within a 20 minutes radius. In the morning, I walked to the REAL outdoor market to eat breakfast cook on spot, buy fresh fruit, etc. Gene is an excellent host, he responses to my requests right away. The house is huge, clean and cozy. Internet is great. One little issue for people who wake up late since we are on the main street so you can start hearing the noise of the bus at 6am in the morning. No problem with me, I wake up at 5! Thank you Gene, I had a great stay.
Dear Phu, it was a true pleasure to host you. We appreciate your wonderful review and hope you will visit Oaxaca again in the future. My best wishes with your projects!
Near the "stairway" to the Cerro del Fortín, where you may take an easy stroll (or an intense workout) under the shade of the huge ficus benjamina trees common in the area.
