historic district: Lewes has a vibrant Historic DIstrict with lovely Victorian homes. Some are converted to businesses but most are lived-in.
213 and 215 Second St were built together for 2 generations of the same family; the houses share a wall but all rooms, systems and gardens are separate. The original carriage house (with its horse weathervane) is in our garden. A retired couple-former teachers- have owned 215 for many years and live there during the summer.

About William Whitman or Sallie Davis
We fell in love with this Victorian home in the center of Lewes historic district where we and our children could walk everywhere! Our growing family continues to love it and enjoy it year-round. We live near Washington, DC and are available by cell phone anytime.
William Whitman or Sallie Davis purchased this House in 2004
Why William Whitman or Sallie Davis chose Historic District
Located on one of the original house lots in Lewes, the older part of the house was built in the 1880's and then added on to around 1900. While the kitchens, baths and systems are modern, much of the original charm of the house has been preserved. We have many guests who return every year; people who come to get married in town or at the house; many guests with three generations; reunions; and other celebrations. The house is within four blocks of many great restaurants and bars, great shopping, the tennis courts, ball field, and public dock, the historic sites in town, churches, and City Hall, and just a short walk further to the boat yard, the town beach (by the Dairy Queen) and more. The Henlopen State Park beach is a 5 minute drive with great parking, a concession stand with changing rooms, hiking trails, historic exhibits and access for off-road vehicles. We have friends and neighbors in Lewes who help us care for the house when we're not there and something goes wrong.
What makes this House unique
The carriage house is like a second living room so your party can divide up as desired. Barbecues on warm nights in the very private back yard with the sliding doors open to the carriage house living area where there is music or tv are divine.

Beautiful home in downtown Lewes!
My family of 3 couples, had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home. We hope to stay here again in the future. The location was perfect and a few minutes from the ferry. The owners were extremely responsive to any questions that we asked and very hospitable.
ok. If you are reading this review you should immediately book this place!!!
This house is perfectly located in downtown Lewes backs up to Canal with Marina steps away from boat slips!! The back yard and carriage house makes you feel like you are in the country. Great house and will be back again for sure :)
A Family Tradition is Established
Morning coffee on the front porch, afternoons at the beach and dinners either in the gorgeous backyard or steps away in the restaurants on Second Street -- family vacations don't get much better than that. Thank you again William & Sallie for allowing us all to enjoy being together in that great house for such a memorable getaway. We'll most certainly be back!!
First of all, thank you Sallie and Bill for sharing your property. There were 8 adults, 2 young children and one baby that made the trip to Lewes, the home had plenty of room and was comfortable. Six of us stayed in the main house , all the beds were queen size and very comfortable , the main house has two bathrooms with showers on the second floor and one bath with a tub on the first floor. The first floor bath was used by the 2 adults and 2 children staying in the carriage house. The impressive thing was we took many showers after trips to the beach or when we woke up but never lost the hot water. The house is located in the historic district , there are many old and beautiful homes nearby, the main business district is just down the street where there are top notch restaurants and cute shops. Parking can become a slight problem, the private spot is small and you would be hard pressed to park 2 cars, but in most cases we found free on street parking when we were patient and willing to walk a short distance. Canal Front park is outside the back gate, almost every day some sort of activity or entertainment was going on, yoga, Zumba, music and movies for kids were what we experienced. The bay beach is a walkable distance away, this beach is great for young children because of the calm waters, just a short 2 mile drive or bike ride is the state park. The beach we enjoyed the last couple of years at the park is Herring Point, not very crowded. If a boardwalk is more your style Rehoboth Beach is a short drive south. Back to the house, it has a great front porch where you can sit for hours and people watch, talk to passerbyes or just relax. There were all the things you needed to prepare dinners ( pots, pans etc ) and to serve them. There is a washer and dryer down in the basement. We were so busy that I did not see a TV on all week but there are 3 on the premises. One negative , the wifi is very, very slow but we survived. So, if you are looking for a place to stay in Lewes I would say that I think you would be hard pressed to find one better than Sallie and Bill's. Location, location...thanks again Sallie and Bill.
Fantastic family beach weekend!!
We loved staying in Bill and Sallie's Victorian house in downtown Lewes. The location could not be beat (ice cream in shouting distance, short walk to the beach or The Wharf) and the accommodations were high end and very comfortable. We had a few families, lots of kids and the house accommodated everyone very comfortably. The beds were comfortable and we were able to churn out big group meals in the well stocked kitchen. The backyard grill and hammock space was great for outdoor meal times. Once the kids were asleep, we spent every night sitting on the front porch chatting into the night. Bill and Sallie were responsive and attentive to our needs during our stay and we appreciated all of the help they gave.
Shannon& her family were great! We are glad they had a great time!
The house is located immediately adjacent to the downtown shopping and restaurant district with something for everyone - fine dining, clothes, antiques, art, fine crafts, toys, ice cream, wine and beer, two excellent coffee houses, furniture, housewares, beach supplies, post office, banks, and more - all within a few blocks. The gate in the backyard opens directly onto Front Street and the Canal, the new Canal Park, public tennis courts, and fishing and boating facilities. There is ample street parking in front of the house and two dedicated spaces in back. Walk to the town (bay) beach- perfect for young children or go to Cape Henlopen State Park ,a 5 minute drive and an easy 15 minute bicycle ride from the house. It is a truly fine National Seashore Park with a beautiful beach, concession stand, showers, bicycle and nature trails, a seashore education center for the kids, lifeguards, pier fishing, soccer fields and more. Lewes is a year-round destination!
Other Activities: Boardwalk, great restaurants, minigolf, shopping
Golf: Several nice golf courses are nearby (the closest is on Rte 1 North) and mini-golf on Rt1 1 South and in Rehoboth Beach.
