Town: Stalbridge, Dorset's smallest town, dates back to Saxon times and can be found within glorious North Dorset countryside in the lush Blackmore Vale, used as a backdrop to Thomas Hardy's “Tess of the D'Urbervilles”, adjoining the border with Somerset. The town, with its central attractive conservation area and 15th Century market cross still retains much of its olde worlde timeless character, with a number of quaint shops and inns. The town makes an ideal and peaceful centre from which to explore this lovely area. Within an easy drive can be found historic Sherborne, famous for its abbey and castles and once home to Sir Walter Raleigh, a wealth of National Trust properties including the beautiful house and gardens at Stourhead, and the town of Shaftesbury. With the cathedral cities of Wells and Salisbury, mystical Stonehenge and the Dorset Coast all easily accessible, this location has plenty to offer at any time of the year.
