Montana River Lodge is a wonderfully inspiring and relaxing facility available to couples, families, weddings, fishing or corporate groups by reservation. We are located on 25 acres of private Clark Fork River frontage completely surrounded by hundreds of acres of gated state forest. A wide array of activities and an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful beauty of Western Montana awaits you. We are located just downstream from the best whitewater rafting in Montana. The world famous "Alberton Gorge" is a thrilling class 3, ten mile stretch of big waves, sandy beaches, and amazing scenery. The lodge overlooks a spectacular river setting with great fishing, swimming, volleyball, horseshoes, sports field, and a huge bonfire area.
Fishing at the lodge uniquely combines terrific trout size in good numbers and very low fishing pressure. Our easement provides private access to over two miles of rarely fished trophy trout stream. Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brown, and Bull trout average 15 to 20 inches with some over ten pounds.
The beach has several sandbars, a perfect spot to sunbathe while the kids play in the river. Have you ever tried gold panning? The beach has some 'color' that is fun to swirl in a pan and gives you the feeling of a 'gold rush'. Eagles and osprey often soar over the river pool formed by the cliffs on the shore across from the lodge. Watch them swoop down on an unsuspecting trout.
The open hillsides on the mountains across the river provide opportunities to see deer and elk through a spotting scope or binoculars. Get a magnified view of the eagles and osprey as they perch in the trees or in nearby nests. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of forest with numerous mountain lakes. Endless miles of trails and roads provide opportunity for hiking or riding bikes and atvs. The river provides miles of amazing fishing and floating pleasure. Located just 40 miles west of Missoula, we provide a spacious, secluded, and private atmosphere for those looking to get away or just relax in an enviorrnment of cozy comfort. Let us know how we can make your vacation a truly memorable experience.

About Ray Baier
We designed and built the lodge in 2002 and operated a teen home for 9 years. In our design and western decor we have incorporated our interest in fishing, hunting and the Montana outdoor experience. We enjoy talking with our guests to offer suggestions about the many area attractions and adventures that may enhance their stay.
Ray Baier purchased this Lodge in 2002
Why Ray Baier chose Mineral County
While floating the river one day, we found this amazing setting just downstream from the famous Alberton Gorge whitewater canyon. The undeveloped site was completely surrounded by hundreds of acres of state forest offering the ultimate in privacy in our end of road location. The forest around us is closed to automotive use, resulting in a nature preserve offering quiet walks, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, or x-country skiing. The scenic setting is simply stunning. Guests repeatedly tell us the views of the river and mountains result in relaxation and rejuvenation. We watch eagles and osprey gliding over the river from our deck daily. The river allows an amazing assortment of water sports including fishing, rafting, kayaking, swimming, tubing, and boating. The natural flat below the lodge made a perfect area for our sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, sports field, bath house, and bonfire ring. The large lawn areas overlooking the river are available for events such as outdoor weddings.
What makes this Lodge unique
There is a fruit orchard and berry patch with raspberries and strawberries for snacking. We have several tubes and life jackets for enjoying the river. There is a raft, float tubes, and fly rods available for rental.

This was the perfect place for me to host my retirement party with my fishing friends!
This is a great place to stay at in rural Montana. It was everything that was advertised. Perfect setting. Very comfortable. Well maintained. Great views. I hosted my fishing friends for a weeks celebration upon my retirement. It was great. Did I mention that the fishing is fantastic? I recommend this lodge to everyone!
Beautiful home and property
Spent four days there with friends. Comfortable house with all needed amenities. The view from the house is unbelievable. Ray is very easy to work with and will give advice on local day trips. Close enough to Missoula to drive in for dinner but you'll want to cook so you don't have to leave this property. Can't wait to go back!
We want each guest to feel "at home" and make the most of their stay. We try to help all we can with suggestions that coincide with the interests of guests. Ray and Sally Baier
Wonderful get away!
Ray is amazing to work with! Beautiful home and setting!
This guest was difficult to reach by phone so we were able to complete all the details thru emails. They were the best guests anyone could ever ask for and we look forward to their return.
Exceptional Rental! Great fly fishing. Spectacular location & view. Private water.
The place is everything advertised and more. Lodge accomodations, seriously.
Our party of long time fishing buddies stayed 8 nights and fly fished the included private water and points downstream for three of six days and nearby fisheries the other three. We drifted from below the house's private launch to 5 miles downstream and enjoyed exclusive fishing on every run and seam we stopped at! We did have to share the best spots with ospreys, bald eagles, moose, kingfishers, wild turkeys, deer, mink(?), and bucky beaver. Unbelievable. There were only three other parties drifting for fun and not fishing in 3 full days on the Clark Fork. Yow.
The owner Ray is very generous with his wealth of information about the many area fisheries and dug up fresh info. day by day from his local contacts. He put us on fish in spots we never would have known about. We never did hire a guide as planned. No need.
We can't wait to return!
We are truly blessed to provide guests with an exceptional experience that they will treasure forever.
The owner was extremely helpful and returned all calls promptly. He not only gave us fishing tips, he directed us to people and places to enhance our vacation, thank you Ray! The view and location were spectacular. We were a smaller group, but the lodge can accommodate a much larger group. We would love to return again and make it a large family gathering!
Most of our guests are interested in the activities that this area offers. So we strive to recommend a variety of things to do and see that will make your visit memorable.
Western Montana Perfection!
This really is a perfect getaway location for any groups/parties that are looking to see Western Montana at it's finest! Although it's less than an hour drive from Missoula, the seclusion, privacy and beauty of the lodge will make you feel like you've driven days into the wilderness. The owner, Ray, was very helpful, accommodating and reasonable throughout the entire process. You really can't go wrong with this rental.
There were 5 couples and 4 children in our group, and everyone had a great time, as there is plenty to do inside and outside of the house. In addition to nice, clean, private bedrooms, the kitchen was fully loaded with everything we needed to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as even do some baking. When it got dark, we spent most of our time in the garage, which is heated, where we had intense ping-pong and fuse-ball tournaments. There is also a ladder ball and folf goal that can easily be set up outside during the day.
During the day, it's a quick, beautiful walk down to the Clark Fork River, which is private and as gorgeous as it gets (the only thing we saw moving down there was the train and a black bear!). We also took advantage of hiking in the 30-square mile national forest adjacent to the property, and we did a scenic 4-mile raft trip down the Clark Fork as well. Although we didn't get a chance to fly fish, we saw plenty of trout in the holes located close to the lodge.
The house is fully stocked with whatever you need, and we had no complaints in regards to anything being dirty or broken. Again, I highly recommend this property, as it will not disappoint!
Our lodge is located 40 miles from Missoula, at the Tarkio Exit 61, about 1 mile off of I-90 on the Clark Fork River. There is excellent fishing on our property and on the river above and below us. The Alberton Gorge is a very popular class 3 whitewater stretch that ends just upstream from the lodge. A thrilling ride awaits the adventurer on a raft ,kayak, or bogieboard. The section of river from the lodge downriver is perfect for gentle floating on a raft, canoeing or tubing. We are surrounded by state and national forest lands, and there are numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain bikes, ATVs or even snowshoeing in the winter. Our beach is the ultimate swimming hole or the pefect place for a sunny afternoon nap. Mountain bikes are available at Lookout Pass for touring the famous Hiawatha Trail thru tunnels and over trestles. The National Bison Range is a favorite day trip. The nearby historic Jesuit Mission has amazing frescos and an informative history of early mission work among the local native tribes. But above all else, the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery is the highlight of all these activities.
