About Alan Dagnall
I have lived in this beautiful area of France for over 40 years and take great pride in this 13th Century house that I have lovingly converted from a barn. I have been known to enjoy a glass of wine or 2 and am happy to share my local knowledge with you.
Why Alan Dagnall chose Thénac
This house is very special to me and I feel honoured to be it's custodian for a brief period in it's long history. From being a building housing the guardian of the water source in medieval times to the welcoming home it is today makes me very happy to be able to share the history with you.

A lovely gite in a peaceful setting which comfortably accommodated our extended family.
The owners are really lovely and very helpful. It is great value for money accommodating large families comfortably. Great facilities with pool and golf. Beautiful lakes. Great fun feeding the fish if you’re not into catching them.
Ideal property in a beautiful area
A spacious property which provided an ideal base for our three generation family holiday. We particularly enjoyed the two outside dining areas , one providing shade whilst the open area was pleasant in the evening . We greatly appreciated the well kept pool, fishing lake and large outside area for the children to explore. Whilst the main pool was a little cold for the youngest children they enjoyed the small pool. The welcome, advice and friendliness of the owners enhanced our stay.
The ultimate relaxing holiday
Alan and Sandra were superb hosts. Always on hand with plenty of excellent advice of where to go, what to do and where to eat. Quiet, tranquil spot in the middle of the vineyards made it an incredibly peaceful holiday. Pool was a good size and set in a sun trap. Highly recommend.
A lovely big old house full of character in a very quiet location. Alan and Sandra were great hosts.
We had a wonderful holiday in this house at the end of August. The house is very old and full of character. There were 10 of us spanning three generations and there was something here for all of us. We particularly liked the huge living/dining/kitchen area where we could all be together but doing separate things, the pool with its adjacent paddling pool which was great for the grandchildren (2 months to 2 3/4), the large outside dining table with its permanent gazebo which meant we could use it in all weathers (mostly sunny during our stay), the fishing lake, the pitch and putt course, all the help Alan and Sandra gave us, for example where best to eat and buy the local wine, and the very quiet location.
Points which could be of relevance to others but which were minimal issues for us were that sound carries a long way inside the house (this is a feature of the very old construction of the house, which is also what makes it so characterful) and that the only shower is with the one downstairs bedroom.
Comfortable , well equipped property with welcoming, efficient hosts in a beautiful area.
We really enjoyed our stay at Les Vachers. Alain and Sandra were perfect hosts, dealing promptly with any queries and providing lots of useful local information. The house has everything one could need and is well equipped for all ages. Visiting in late September, it took some courage to actually swim but the pool area is a great spot to read in the sunshine. The provision of two outside tables gives a welcome choice of eating in full sun or shade and is typical of the thoughtful provision for their guests' needs.
There are lots of interesting places to explore and flights to Bergerac make access easy. We would happily return and have already recommended Les Vachers to our extended family.
Lovely location. Alan and Sandra were very welcoming and accommodating.
The property is charming, in a terrific location. Great for our large family with lots of room for the children to burn energy. Our only disappointment was that the pool was very cold though it would be great in July/ August
Les Vachers is 20km south of Bergerac set amongst local vineyards. Bergerac offers low cost flights from a variety of UK airports with Ryanair, Flybe and Jet2. Bordeaux airport is 1 hour away.
A car is essential in this rural area. Bergerac and Ste Foy La Grande are the 2 main market towns. Bergerac has a wine museum on the river front which is well worth a visit and combine that with a boat trip along the Dordogne river. The pretty bastide town of Eymet is also nearby hosting both a weekly market and in the summer months a night market.
Duras with its imposing chateau is only 20 minutes drive and again has a wonderful night market with music and various food stalls.
There is plenty to explore in this beautiful area with canoeing down the Dordogne offering spectacular views.
The famous wine region of St Emilion is only 40 minutes drive away and this picturesque town is well worth a visit.
With so many restaurants in the local area you are spoilt for choice. There are 3 course set lunches from as little as 12 euros per head to the Michelin starred La Tour des Vents at nearby Monbazillac.
Golf: A private 9 hole pitch and putt course is set in the surrounding grounds, with the lake being a water hazard! Most holes are a par three with a couple of par 4s so those kids (and big kids) can play while Mum relaxes by the private pool.
A full range of golf clubs are available for your use during your stay at no extra charge. Ladies clubs, left handed ones and even kiddies clubs are available so no excuses.
Chateau les Vigiers is a golf and leisure complex which is only 7km from Les Vachers. It offers a 18 hole golf course and driving range. There is also a 6 hole academy course. Visitors are welcome and golfers with minimum 36 handicap can play, with clubs, trolleys and electric carts for hire.
The chateau also offers 2 restaurants and a beauty salon.
There are many other courses in the vicinity, the owner can give directions.
