Sports & Adventure Activities
Outstanding cabin, incredibly well-managed, lots of outdoor opportunities
The first thing you'll notice about the cabin is prompt and informative responses via e-mail from the owners when you have questions. On a recent "guys trip" for hiking and fishing (six nights, starting October 4th), we showed up totally informed, not only regarding the cabin itself, but also on local weather, hiking trails and fishing expectations. You'll notice from other reviews that Jim is an incredible host -- he'll greet you when you arrive, figure out exactly what you might need, and provide it in a perfectly non-intrusive manner. In our case, since prior communication was so thorough, we needed little and were able to focus on enjoying Jim's company -- he's a terrific guy who's led a fascinating life, and he's an encyclopedia of local knowledge. You can see Jim's influence on the cabin, as it's rock solid, just the right combination of rustic and modern, and perfectly suited to its environment. There's wifi for staying connected as necessary, but (thankfully) you'll need to step outside to use it, so you won't be tempted to waste time on your iPad when you could (and should) be outside seeing eagles, moose, elk, mule deer, etc.. There are fire pits right where you would want them, firewood, and plenty of porch space for hanging out. Appliances and cookware are available for cooking any meals you might dream up. Most of us hiked about 30 miles each over the course of the week, fishing along the way, and we didn't even make a dent in the exploring opportunities. Roads to the cabin are fine -- a high clearance vehicle isn't necessary to arrive safely at the cabin, but it might prove useful for side trips or inclement weather (Fairfield, ID weather forecast is a good approximation). The locals we met when on the trail or on the road were engaging and quick with advice for local exploration, and the best endorsement I can give for the local area is that I'm pretty sure nobody cared about our politics or whether we were vegans or big-game hunters. Bottom line: there's a reason this place gets only the highest ratings on VRBO -- great value, fantastic surroundings, perfectly managed by a super-friendly host. My buds and I hope to return at our first opportunity, and you will, too.
More than meets the eye...
We booked a last minute Labor Day weekend getaway, meeting friends half way between Boise and Salt Lake City. Our top choices were already booked, but we thought this looked like it would be clean and comfortable, we weren't sure about the location. Jim's place blew us away. He has really created the perfect mountain retreat.... From a well maintained beach area, to a killer fire pit with rigged cooking mechanisms, to the little trails he has carved out around the cabins. We brought way more than we needed because the cabin and places around were well stocked and ready for guests to enjoy. Perfect for families! You won't regret your stay at the River Cabin, you'll be sure to create memories that will last a lifetime!
This is just an awesome place to experience! This cabin is clean, private, very well kept and perfectly situated near the river. It was so peaceful and just away from it all. The red salmon happened to be moving upstream while we were there and it was fun to experience that. We caught a couple of trout for supper one night. There's nothing like the sound of a mountain river when you open the door! We loved eating out on the porch morning and evening when we weren't out hiking and exploring during the day. Hummingbirds, deer and a variety of squirrels carrying away pine cones to store up for the winter. Jim is just a wonderful man and host. He was accessible when we needed him (had a car battery issue) but never intrusive. We always felt like it was just the 2 of us. God truly blessed us in so many ways during our 4 day stay! It went by way too fast. We trekked 1,320 miles from Iowa and were not disappointed in the least!
Great Family get a way
We had a wonderful time relaxing and exploring the amazing Sawtooth Mountains while staying at the cabin. The cabin was clean and wonderfully decorated. However, the highlight of the trip was meeting Jim. He was a gracious host who went out of his way to make sure we had an amazing time. We highly recommend this cabin as a great place to get away from the world if even for a few days.
Relaxing Cabin, Great Location, Attentive Host
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the River Cabin on the Southfork of the Boise River.
Accommodations: The cabin was so nice and inviting. Everything in the listing was available including a washer, coffee pot, oven, linens, cookware, dining table, and couch. We did not find ourselves in need of anything additional. Even the front and back porches had benches and chairs to sit on and we enjoyed utilizing these areas to take advantage of the cool mornings and evenings. The decor was outdoor themed and helped set the mood for a great wilderness experience.
Recreation: The cabin is situated on a nicely improved bit of private land. Jim has maintained trails and marked them with signage. The trails go to the improved fire pits (there are two), the beach, and a beaver pond. The fire pit areas have log bench seating. The beach is a nice area right on the river bend where he has set up a canopy with chairs and there are intertubes for floating the river. Unfortunately, the extreme winter and extra high river waters have washed out much of the trail to the beaver pond but we still took a short adventure down that way. Jim said he plans to repair it soon. With the river literally in the cabin's backyard, you don't even have to leave the property to fish. Outside of the cabin property, there are many more hiking trails and fishing spots. We hiked up Emma Creek and Bear Creek. We visited Big Smoky and fished many of these areas, catching at least a dozen fish during our stay.
Wildlife: There is also plenty of opportunity to view wildlife on and around the cabin property. We saw several deer, a moose, and a herd of 750 sheep. Evidently there is a wolf den about 4 miles from the cabin. We were thankful not to encounter them during our stay. :)
Host: Jim was such an attentive host. He and his adorable dog Bleu rode by and checked on the property each day. One morning, they stopped by to inform us that a moose was wandering the property so we could see it. He helped direct us to an optimal location for viewing the total solar eclipse. We appreciated his attention to detail and his efforts to help us have a wonderful vacation!
Directions: The directions provided to the cabin were on point and we had no trouble finding it.
The perfect place to relax
My family had a wonderful time at Jim's cabin. We could not have asked for a more beautiful setting. The cabin itself was very comfortable, clean, and with all of the needed amenities for a family with three little kids. My children really enjoyed sleeping up in the loft. Listening to the river while sitting on the porch with a book was one of our favorite morning and evening activities. The surrounding property had so much area to explore. The beach along the river was a great place to relax and let the kids play while still enjoying the beautiful scenery. Jim was a very thoughtful host. It was obvious he wanted to make sure our stay was as good as it could be, and he definitely succeeded. We hope to return again next summer!
