Mexican Sunrise House...Hola! Your hosts are the Gutman's who reside in Ajijic.

Wake up every morning to a Mexican sunrise in a Brand New Home. Why not rent your very own two-story Mexican designed home? The Mexican Sunrise House is located in the most desirable area of Ajijic-Las Salvias area. This exquisite home is in walking distance to everything and set into the hills with a lake and mountain-view. Did you know that Ajijic has some of the best year round climates in the world? No wonder it is called 'the land of eternal spring' and hosts 'the' largest number of U.S. and Canadian ex-pats in the world!

Are you considering retirement? This home will certainly give you the true flavor of our village. Ajijic is an excellent getaway to a mild climate and a chance to experience the authentic Mexican life. Enjoy a brilliant sunrise, church bells, fragrant flowers and be peaceful in the hills of this village. This BRAND NEW home is secured and located in a very safe area where you can walk the village streets- Ajijic is a 500 year old romantic cobblestone village.

Centrally located, the Mexican Sunrise House is a charming two story home with two bedrooms and a full bathroom on the upper level. The downstairs includes a large living room with French doors and large windows, open concept kitchen, breakfast bar, half-bathroom and covered terrassa for outdoor dining. There is secure parking if you choose to bring or rent a car during your stay in Ajijic. Our guests tell us it is a home away from home.

The spectacular terrace off the master bedroom has exceptional views of the lake and mountains. Don't be surprised if it calls you to sip your first cup of coffee in the morning while watching the sun rise over the village. The master bedroom has an American queen-size pillow top bed, custom built in closets and high 'cupola' ceiling. All linens and towels are quality fabrics, understanding the needs of spoiling our guests. All the rustic furniture is hand painted by a local artist. The master bathroom includes: Mexican tiled sink, shower with a built in tiled sitting bench, and stained glass windows.

The second bedroom has a high-riser(day bed) that sleeps two, feather beds for that European comfort, as well as an elegant hand painted rustic desk to set up your laptop computer. High speed internet access is already set up for you. A large window with views of the mountain creates a quiet charm and rustic beauty.

As you descend the staircase an artistic stained glass window allows light into the home and adds more Mexican charm. The downstairs area has lots of windows and French doors to create a bright and airy feeling. Mexican arches and nooks are set off by dramatic lighting and 'boveda' Mexican styled ceilings. Relax and watch your favorite TV programs or listen to your favorite music on the satellite TV with hundreds of stations: sports, CNN, BBC, movies, music, etc. (we have Canadian and U.S. programs)

The Mexican crafted kitchen has all the modern appliances and designed for easy living. You can prepare meals while still being part of the living area. The kitchen includes a large pantry, gas oven and stove top, microwave oven and triple filtered water.

Protected from the sun you can enjoy the downstairs terrace and enjoy dining out in the evening. A Mexican tiled fountain provides you with a quiet Zen moment and you will understand why you are in paradise as the tropical ceiling fans provide cool breezes.

For your convenience: US washer and dryer, storage room for golf clubs and sports equipment, secured off street parking.

We also like to remind you that we have another home, The Mexican Jewel House-VRBO #104029 that is close by for families and friends that want to enjoy their visits together, but maintain their privacy and comfort. Just ask for both homes if you are considering multi-family/friend visits to our village.

Maid and gardener services are included as are gas, electric and local phone calls. There are absolutely no hidden charges!

We've taken the pleasure to supply you with a list of our favorite restaurants, shops, village outdoor market days and full day outings to artistic and historical cities. We enjoy stocking the fridge with a few goodies to get you going the first day you arrive and you can certainly pop down the street for some fill-ins. This home is so well located that many visitors never use their cars. Just three streets away you will find a variety of small fruit and vegetable markets, 2 fish markets and a small grocery store. You can stock up on our local produce and enjoy the fresh foods.

Only 3 minutes from The Mexican Sunrise House, we have our very own baker (Pan). Walk down the cobblestones to the original rustic bakery and buy warm fresh rolls every morning, croissants, sweet rolls (pan dulce) and have an authentic experience with our local baker who speaks English! Once inside this amazing bakery-you can special order: bagels, baguettes, whole wheat croissants and cactus bread.

If you are here for affordable plastic surgery, dental work or medical treatments-this home is a perfect place to be peaceful. A complete dental cleaning is just $40, hour-long massages are $28 and you can choose from more 'spoiling' during your stay.

Remember – location, location, location! Just a short stroll away and you are at the main plaza with over 40 international restaurants, local artist galleries, shops and the true Mexico, at your feet. Walk the cobblestone streets, get caught in the local sights and sounds of the village, and enjoy what over 7,000 North Americans call home.

I wish I lived here! Beautiful home w/ caring hosts

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Leo and Gaby for the great stay in the Mexican Sunrise House. This host, home, and town are an absolute treat. Leo and Gaby welcomed us in with drinks and snacks overlooking the sunset on the lake. They told us some really interesting facts about their location, the history, what to do and see, and current news in Mexico (I love getting these insider tips to help me get to know the place). They helped us find all our favorite spots in town like brunch with live classical music on the beach (it was surreal), bakeries for fresh bread every morning, great artisan shops for me and gifts for friends, tequila tasting, and great walking. Everything you could need was walking distance. And that was when we were willing to leave the house. It is such a charming, comfortable space, with beautiful outdoor patio and dining areas, that we often grabbed some market goodies and went right back home to eat. I cannot wait to go visit Leo and Gaby again and see what our next adventures hold.

Comfortable and convenient!

  • 5 of 5

The casita was equipped with everything I wanted and needed, and even a washer and dryer. It was just a few blocks to the center of the village, and the bus stop so I could easily get around. The view from the 2nd floor screened porch was lovely. The gardeners and maids do a great job of keeping everything looking beautiful.

I really enjoyed my week at the Sunrise House.

Only in your dreams is this a 5 star experience! We did NOT love it, but can't remove the heart!

  • 2 of 5

While the house is clean and comfortable, very private and has a lovely view from the mirador and a gorgeous little garden, it is tired and much in need of renovation. The photos must have been taken years ago.

What was most shocking to us, however, was that the immediate neighborhood is by far the absolute worst area in all of Ajijic. Difficult to navigate with broken sidewalks teeming with people and dogs and filthy with garbage and excrement, coming and going down to the main village was a real challenge. Since we did not rent a car, we started going completely out of our way to avoid Calle Juarez and the eastern end of Angel Flores. However, the main highway, or Carretera both east and west of the rental property was in the same deplorable condition. Had we been familiar with the town, we could have rented in a much better area for half the price, and had an infinitely more enjoyable stay.

We feel that the information provided by the owner was misleading and overly glamorized. We would not rent here again.

Owner's Response: I am glad that you found our place clean and comfortable, though I'm sorry that part of your stay was not as you had expected. This has not been the case for the just about every other guest who has stayed here over the last 10 years, which is why I want to ensure that your review does not fall on deaf ears. Prior to booking, I pride myself on giving guests ample information on the region, the city, the neighborhood and of course the house. Setting proper expectations is important in searching for a rental and, based on your feedback, I will be certain to provide even more information to future guests. You are indeed correct; some of the roads and sidewalks are in need of some love. This is Mexico. For many, this is one of the reasons they come to visit and appreciate a different culture - and like all different cultures there are some things we love (the wonderful food, the vibrant art, the welcoming neighbors, the enjoyable weather), but there are some things that are a little more challenging and beyond the control of this innkeeper (such as sidewalk improvement projects and road resurfacing). Much of the charm that draws expats to visit and live in Ajijic stems from the authentic feel of living in a small Mexican village. This includes walking the 3 blocks to town on cobblestone streets, as opposed to paved roads, living among the locals rather than being segregated, and yes, sharing the streets with the pets of the people who live here. Most guests and locals find the cobble-stoned streets quaint—but I understand that everyone's needs and expectations are different. Lastly, you mentioned that the house is in need of renovation; however, it would be much more helpful to me if you could e-mail me specifics so that I can immediately take action. Once again, I am disappointed that your stay was not as you had hoped. As you may notice, there are many positive reviews posted here, which is why your concerns are very important to me. I invite anyone to check out the other 80 reviews of this VRBO property. Additionally, to get a balanced view of the village, you can look at the reviews of any of the 90 or so Ajijic properties listed in VRBO.

Fabulous time at the Mexican Sunrise House!

  • 5 of 5

Leo's Mexican Sunrise House was even more than we expected! Very classic Mexican look, flavor and feel. Mexican tile floors, sinks, showers and furniture. All beautiful, furniture functional and comfortable. The upstairs terrace was great for cooling off and relaxing, esp on the initial warmer days. The downstairs patio was perfect anytime! Rooms are all spacious and the big beautiful windows brought the tropical feel and cool breezes in. Leo has provided plenty of info on the house, the area, the great restaurants and things to do both before we arrived and once we got there. He is a knowledgeable, warm, welcoming and responsive host! He clearly loves his homes and the beautiful area. The location is great, close to the Ajijic Plaza, the malecon and many excellent, inexpensive restaurants and shops. Be sure to get the terrific roasted chicken, and all the sides, at Faby's just down the hill. Better than any similar chicken in the US! The Plaza at Chapala, which does require a car, taxi or bus ride, was one of our favorite places, and offered more great shopping and restaurants. Lots to see and do. We felt so safe and comfortable, like "at home", the entire time! We definitely plan to return and may ultimately call this beautiful area home! We highly recommend Leo and both his homes, The Mexican Sunrise House AND the Jewel House (where my sister and her hubby stayed!) It was great having them right next door! Perfect set-up for 2 couples! GREAT JOB LEO!!

Perfect in every way! Thank you Leo

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from spending 8 nights at this wonderful property. Well located, clean, secure, comfortable beds and great wifi. We had a car and the property has a secure space if you need it. We found ourselves walking most places in Ajijic and only using the car for trips around the lake or to Chapala and Guadalajara. A 10 minute walk to the very pleasant square and another 5 to the lakefront. A very good kitchen if you want to prepare your own meals but many good restaurants in walking distance. Everything was great but here was the highlight... Leo was the best and most organized host you will find anywhere. We've stayed at many excellent rental homes and apartments around the world and this was hands down the best. After you receive Leo's welcome info you really won't have too many questions as he has anticipated almost anything you can think of. Leo is responsive and reliable. Not only that but he's a nice guy and is a wealth of knowledge about the area. If you can rent this property you should do it. You will not be disappointed.

Absolute perfection… a charming Mexican Casa Sunrise !!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 just spent a week in this very comfortable sunrise house. We loved the authentic Mexican feel and attention to detail within the entire house, as well as the surrounding landscaping. Everything is laid out beautifully, well-kept and perfectly functional, everything works! The outside patio was perfect for enjoying coffee and breakfast with fresh baked bread from the local bakery (a two-minute walk from the house). A nice breeze keeps the palm trees moving while the birds are whistling away. We left all the windows opened 24/7 to enjoy the perfect weather and sounds of nature (kaka doodle doo…). The upstairs master bedroom and patio gives you a nice view of the lake through green palm leaves. The grounds are very well kept with trees, plants, ivy and bougainvillea’s through-out with a washer and dryer tucked away just outside the front door. We had a rental car and used the off-street parking in the drive way, very secure and private from the street. Leo is the perfect host and provides all the info and local knowledge you will need to get the full experience of Ajijic (a seven-minute walk to the central Jardin). It was nice meeting Gaby as well. “Cali” the dog welcomes you and loves to play. The layout is such where a walkway and brick wall separates the properties for complete privacy. Leo has two, 2 bedroom homes (Sunrise and Jewel) adjacent to each other, private yet easily accessible. This is a perfect layout for two couples or two families wanting to share the experience. This was our first time in Ajijic, loved the weather and friendly people everywhere we went from Chapala to Jocotepec. The restaurants were wonderful, very reasonably priced and delicious. We are definitely coming back and likely will stay much longer than a week the next time we come. Hasta pronto Ajijic….
