The area and the settings are spectacular and you can spend days exploring the area. No matter what your ability, there are drives, walks and climbs in a variety of surroundings.
We have some of the best coastlines and mountains on our doorstep, and wherever you are, keep your eyes open for wildlife. The area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, many less common elsewhere, as well as being a regular migration site for many species.
Our solitude and peace is often an attraction to visitors, but there are villages and communities nearby, many offering a great welcome and range of attractions and places to stop and see.
If you prefer the quieter life, you can just sit and view the coast and mountains in the view from the garden bench with a cuppa, or maybe take a few minutes leisurely walk to go fly fishing by the quiet haven of Loch Cul Froaich.
Meall Dubh is a traditional former crofting cottage traditionally built from local stone possibly reclaimed from the remains of another building just to the side of the existing cottage.
The name ‘Meall Dubh’ translates in Scottish gaelic to ‘Black Hill’ and is a direct reference to the hill of the same name just opposite the cottage. The larger than usual windows (for an old crofter’s cottage) in the lounge and the kitchen allow great views of the mountains of Assynt from the kitchen dining area or the easy chairs/sofa in the lounge.
In between the cottage and the hill opposite is Alltan na Fithriach which is a pretty burn stream leading to Raffin Beach and was the site of an old corn mill in the 19th century. Of course, there is no milling done there now but the beach is a wonderfully quiet and unfrequented place to gaze across the sea to the mountains and look out for wildlife. There are regular sightings of basking sharks, otters and whales from this spot during the summer months. One guest took a picture of whales from Meall Dubh garden.
Raffin
Although remote and very peaceful, Raffin is a friendly and busy little “township” containing around 10 dwellings. Raffin’s residents are busy with a diverse range of activities such as crofting, pottery, writing , painting , “Lochinver Llama Trekking “. Last, but not least, the ‘Living the Dream’ Tea and Snack Van at Stoerhead Lighthouse sells great homemade cakes during the summer months

Amazing retreat into remote mountains and wildlife
We really enjoyed our stay at Raffin. The quiteness, amazing views accross mountains and out to sea. Would highly reccomend it, including trips to Handa Island, cliff walks, birdwatching and sea swimming.
Nice traditional cottage with fabulous views over to Assynt, cosy and warm with a good log fire! Well-equipped kitchen. Great for walks and cycle rides.Good communication with Wayne when repair was needed and problem could be fixed really fast.
Myself and missus loved the remoteness and quiet. Cottage is in fantastic condition. We will more than likely be back at some point. Highly recommend if you savour being in a remote place.
The cottage was very comfortable, well equipped and nicely decorated with a warm atmosphere. Wonderful views of moorland and mountains from every room in the house and view to the sea from the garden. The house is ideally placed close to the Stoer lighthouse and for many wonderful walks ,kindly recommended by the owner , in the wild nature of the Highlands at close distance or directly from the house,
The cottage was in a very scenic and peaceful setting which suited us. We used the cottage as a base for some local walks and other walks further afield. We discovered that the cottage was about 10 miles from the nearest main road and it took about 30 to 40 minutes of driving on a single track road to get to the main road. The nearest grocery stores were in Lochinver. There was quite a lot of traffic on the single track road, with people visiting the lovely beaches at Auchmelvich and Clactoll. The distance away from the road may not suit everyone.
The cottage had all the facilities that we needed, including dishwasher, washing machine and fridge/freezer. Initially we found the kitchen and lounge to be rather cold, until we were able to get the woodburner stove working.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and love the area.
We loved staying at this cottage. Great comms from Wayne and the views over to the hills were just amazing. The location is quite remote but this was ideal for us as it was so peaceful. Bed super comfy and the kitchen was well appointed with lots of utensils.
Would love to come back and stay. Thanks for a great stay, Wayne and beautiful Sunny Sutherland xx
This is a wonderful two bedroom cottage, perfect for a quiet getaway or a base for cycling, walking and kayaking. It has a view of the sea from the garden, with no other houses in between, great for a coastal walk. You can also see mount Suilven in the distance from the living room. It’s very well maintained and clean.
There are two neighbouring cottages a short distance away but the only other person we saw was the shepherd rounding up his sheep. Perfect.
Fab views. Lovely feeling of being remote from a busy world

Cosy, comfortable cottage in a fantastic location
We had a lovely week staying at Meall Dubh. The cottage is warm, comfortable and well equipped. It is in a great location for exploring the area and there are some fantastic walks right on the doorstep. The views out the cottage to the Assynt mountains is spectacular.

Too remote from everyday facilities
Cottage basically fine but cold, broadband not working and information file very hard to find on arrival. Front door key difficult to operate. TV showed 'No signal' but set to wrong input so easily fixed and broadband usually ok. Cottage warmed up after 2 days.

This was a great property for hiking and for those who want to unplug. Clean, cozy and comfortable.
This was a well kept home in a beautiful setting. We enjoyed hiking right out of the gate during the day. In the evenings we played cards in the evenings in the cozy kitchen. We love watching the livestock roaming the countryside. The weather was wet and cold this time of year so pack rain gear. The road from lochinver to the home was a single lane adventure not for the timid driver. We got the hang of it after a couple of tries. Ullapool was the best place for groceries and eating out but it will take over 1 hr of driving to get there. The owner was very helpful with recommendations and hiking information. He was also good about responding to emails. Loved the visit.

About the host
Hosted by Wayne Burbidge
The house was acquired by the current owners, Wayne and Iona, in 2006. It was in need of some major attention so with the assistance of local tradesmen the cottage was stripped back to the bare essentials in order to install up to date plumbing, electric, heating, damp proofing and insulation and is now a comfortable and well equipped holiday home. Since buying the cottage we and our young daughter have grown to love it and the area and so still take all of holidays there most years. Assynt is such a beautiful place with so much to do.
