About the property

Two Bedroom Balinese Style Villa With Lush Gardens and Breathtaking Views

Delightfully relaxing Balinese-inspired villa with three separate pavilions (living, master bedroom, and guest bedroom) custom-designed to enjoy inside/outside living in your private oasis of sun, lush gardens, hummingbirds, butterflies, toucans, and sparkling pool waters. Nestled high on a peaceful hilltop, the panoramic views are fantastic: to the northeast, the Atenas Valley with Póas, Barva and Irazú volcanoes in the background, to the southwest the Rio Grande Valley and to the east, the Central Valley. Ideally located in a gated eco-residential community, a thirty-minute drive from San Jose airport, this exquisitely crafted three-pavilion tropical hideaway is close to everything Costa Rica has to offer. Invite family and friends to enjoy the spacious pool and spa, lounge on the terrace with a good book, or surf the WiFi from the hammock.

Location: 26 miles northwest of San Jose; 15 miles west of the international airport and 43 miles northeast of Jaco Weather: Warm during the day; mild at night. The dry season runs from December through mid May. A stroll through the immaculate, palm-lined central park or lunch at one of the many typical small cafes serving local food in town awaits visitors to Atenas. Located on the Central Valley’s western edge, Atenas is a slice of quintessential small town Costa Rican life. With just 5,000 inhabitants (17,000 including the suburbs), Atenas is famous for having one of the best climates in the world, according to National Geographic. The words “El Mejor Clima del Mundo” are emblazoned on every Atenas bus; a valid claim as daily temperatures hover around 80 degrees and dip into the 60s at night. Temperatures: Daily averages 77 to 86 °F. Evenings vary from 62-70 °F. Altitude: 2600 feet above sea level.

About Joe Rees

Hello! We're Nancy and Joe Rees... and we love Costa Rica. We recently built a beautiful house in Atenas. We're looking forward to retiring here, but until then we would love to share our peaceful retreat with you. Thanks for considering our house.

Joe Rees purchased this villa in 2008

Why Joe Rees chose Alajuela

We built our home in central Costa Rica, near a small town called Atenas, for easy access to the international airport, wonderful climate, traditional Costa Rican culture, and its' strategic location, the perfect spot for exploring all the wonders Costa Rica has to offer.

What makes this villa unique

We enjoy swimming in the pool, day trips to the beach, local restaurants, soaking in the outdoor jacuzzi, yoga, zip lining, napping in the hammock, hiking, bird watching, the local farmer's market, white water rafting ...and much, much, more.

The lovliest place you could ever imagine....

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have traveled quite a bit over the years, but because we wanted to do something really special for our 25th wedding anniversary, we chose this villa for a 17-day stay. We could not have made a better choice! Once we decided that this was where we wanted to be, (we did a LOT of searching on VRBO!), Joe was incredibly accommodating with his prompt replies to our inquiries. Arrangements were finalized in only a matter of days. After months of anticipation, we found the home and surroundings to be even more beautiful than the pictures conveyed. Never have we experienced accommodations that so perfectly blend the indoors with the outdoors to create an atmosphere that truly renews the spirit.

Atenas was a great pivotal point to be situated and is within close proximity to the airport which we appreciated because several family members and friends joined us at different times throughout our stay. We traveled north to Arenal where we went on several excellent tours (canoeing, ziplining, hiking and biking) and drove to the Pacific Coast several times to enjoy the beaches some of which were great for swimming and others for shelling and exploring tide pools. Atenas has a number of excellent authentic restaurants and everyone we encountered was extremely friendly despite our very limited knowledge of Spanish. Though we didn’t see him often, we really enjoyed Elias (the caretaker) who was ever pleasant and always willing to help us with whatever we needed.

The pool, hot tub and rocking chairs on the porch were favorite spots to spend our time; we enjoyed cooking our own meals in the gourmet kitchen (following trips to the Friday Farmer’s Market), eating dinner on the porch while overlooking the city lights, sleeping in the exceptionally comfortable beds, trying to find the chattering gekos, listening to the birds (and the most beautiful wind chime ever!), and marveling at the breathtaking views from every window! Everything on the property is laid out so well (the pavilions, the pool and hot tub, the gazebo); the landscaping, lighting and Indonesian decor all provide for an incredibly relaxing and peaceful environment, and the amenities accommodate every need you could possibly think of. Joe and Nancy haven’t missed a beat in designing a retreat that restores the soul! We know you will love it!

Worth Every Penny!

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent the last four days of a two week vacation at this beautiful home. My brother said it all shortly after we arrived: "This must be how movie stars vacation!".

The house had spectacular views of the mountains, and we were able to watch both the sunrises and the sunsets from the extensive patios. The pool and hottub were both very clean and perfectly situated with gorgeous landscaping nearby. The pool was a good size, which surprised me as mini pools seem to be common in Costa Rica.

We felt very safe at this house, and appreciated having Elias available to help us out if we had any questions or needed anything.

We had planned on a couple of excursions while in Atenas, but cancelled them as we didn't want to miss a day of hanging out at home! We did however make it to Zoo Ave, which was about a half hour drive from the house. It was very reasonably priced ($15 per adult) and we saw all sorts of animals that we probably would never spot in the wild. If you go, save room for some treats at the end...they have a wonderful assortment of pastries near the exit!

We also made it to the Atenas market Friday morning, where we were able to buy all sorts of fresh vegetables and cheese. Unlike other markets we visited during our vacation, the prices were all posted. This was a great advantage to us as we had been charged what we call the 'gringo price' instead of the 'tico price' elsewhere. We were able to buy anything else we needed at two nearby grocery stores.

The house is a perfect layout for socializing while in the main house, but also allows for people to escape to their own quarters. The kitchen is an entertainer's dream, with a large island where people can sit and talk to the cook.

It seems like a lot of thought has gone into accomodating visitors, such as excellent speakers with an aux jack for mp3 players, a wide variety of reading material and a collection of brochures and menus from nearby attractions and restaurants.

When we were first considering renting this property, we were a bit concerned about the distance to the coast. However, the luxuriousness of this property makes the hour drive well worth it, and the half hour drive to the airport is a godsend if you have an early morning flight out. It is also in a very central location if you plan to visit Arenal Volcano and also go south towards Manuel Antonio Park.

Thanks Joe and Nancy for making this such an inviting and breathtaking retreat!

Perfect In Every Way!

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot fully express the beauty of this villa. The views are incredible from every vantage point, the Balinese architecture is exemplary, and the furnishings are lovely and comfortable. We woke up each morning to a cacophony of sounds- roosters, exotic birds, and even howling dogs that wanted in on the action. Add to that, the scampering sounds of the elusive iguana ever present on the main pavilion's roof. The place is truly magical!

It was the ideal setting for celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. However, I am so thankful that we had friends join us for part of our stay. It would have been a shame not to share this experience with anyone else. The villa is perfect for two couples, each with their own sleeping quarters and bathroom.

We grew to love the town of Atenas. Our favorite restaurant for dinner was La Finca. We also enjoyed Kaye's and El Balcon for breakfast and lunch. We found some wonderful things to do right in the Atenas area, such as the El Toledo Coffee Tour. It was both an informative and intimate look at an organic coffee farm. We spent a day at The Retreat, a lovely wellness center and spa. You can buy a day pass, which includes a massage, yoga, and lunch. And our last discovery right in Atenas was El Granero Brewing Company. Although not an official tour, we stopped in at this microbrewery and the owner Adolfo proudly showed us his beer making process. We did some taste testing on his lovely outdoor deck over looking the beautiful hills and even met the dog that was the inspiration for their La Perrilla beer label.

We ventured to Punta Leona beach, did zip lining and ATV’s at Los Suenos, traveled to Arenal, and took a swim in the Los Chorros Waterfalls. But at the end of the day, we loved returning to Villa Tamarindo. The pool was always refreshing after our day’s events. Even experiencing the rain we sometimes got for an hour in the afternoon was enjoyable from the villa. And at night, the city lights were ablaze in the distance while the outdoor lanterns that hang from the pavilions added a whole new ambience to the place.

From start to finish, it was an amazing experience. Joe was wonderful to work with and readily available to answer all of our pre-trip questions. We loved having Elias on property. He was there when we needed him, but not under foot when we didn’t. My only hope is that we get to return and experience the magic of this place again someday.

Fabulous Home and perfect vacation!!!!

  • 5 of 5

This home is without a doubt the perfect vacation retreat! 5++++ rating in my book. We went with another couple and it could not have been more perfect. Each couple had their own private bedroom pavilion. We were never on top of one another and gathered mornings and evenings to enjoy the common area Pavilion (kitchen and living area). There was a pool and hot tub that were enjoyed daily after our excursions. I would highly recommend this wonderful home. You have beautiful views, perfect weather and it is a gated community so you feel extremely safe as well. Thank you for opening up your beautiful home to allow guests like me to enjoy. Your place was just stunning and perfectly situated in such a great area. You were right, the weather couldn't have been better where you are located . A fabulous vacation was had by all.

Amazing stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from a two week stay at this beautiful property. We can't say enough wonderful things about the accommodations! The main living room/dining room/kitchen area is spacious and inviting. The kitchen is well equipped with nice appliances...I love to cook, so this was a really nice bonus. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. The patios surrounding all of the buildings had lots of chairs to be able to sit in and enjoy the spectacular views. The best way to spend the afternoon was in and around the pool! We appreciated having an onsite caretaker to the property as well. We have traveled to Atenas multiple times, and this is one of the most inviting and well kept properties we have ever stayed at. We look forward to staying here again in the future!
