Welcome to Casa De Mono (Monkey House) a secluded, relaxing, ocean view get-away in an eco-friendly community. Our home overlooks the best beaches in Nicaragua; Playa Maderas, Playones & Playa Majagual. Walk to the beach through the private nature path and it’ll take you about 20 minutes. If you want to hit the surf quicker and don’t feel like walking, the drive is about 3-5 minutes. Casa de Mono has a wonderful ocean view and positioned for maximum privacy, you won't see or hear any neighbors.
Watch amazing sunsets and listen to the waves. Our home blends into the natural, tropical surroundings, has a really cool outdoor natural stone shower and a private pool - no sharing! You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys and exotic birds and will see them throughout the day. After hanging out at the beach or surfing all day, have drinks or dinner on the covered outdoor dining patio. Casa de Mono is a unique custom home that was designed using green building techniques, local hardwoods and local stone.
Our Casa sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms, both with queen-size beds (linens included). There is a fully equipped kitchen, a gas BBQ, a private pool, wireless Internet, a covered patio and an outdoor shower. We have a solar system that warms the water and a battery back-up system that will keep the drinks in the refrigerator cold and the lights on when the local power goes out.
Living room has good size flat screen TV with 150+ movies.
Concierge is included. They will escort you to our home and give you lots of information about the area. They will help book excursions and any activity you might need. We have maid service and 24-hour security.
Rental of a 4X4 vehicle is a must.
**Where we're located**
Our house is in the progressive eco-friendly community of Balcones de Majagual. The community is located just 30 miles from the Costa Rican border and about 20 minutes north of San Juan Del Sur where you can find plenty of nightlife, restaurants and shopping.
Balcones de Majagual was built within a protected forest reserve and is a sister development from the creators of Morgan's Rock. We are just steps from the best beaches of Playa Maderas, Playones, and Majagual. We have monkeys, exotic birds, fascinating jungle creatures, sea turtles, great surf breaks, fishing, hiking, kayaking, and the best sunsets.
**San Juan Del Sur**
Our Casa is about a 20 minute drive to the lively beach town of San Juan del Sur where you can find markets, restaurants and bars. The town is also a launch off spot for many adventures such as turtle viewing at La Flor, Volcano expeditions, Zip-line excursions, ATV rentals, Sport fishing and much more. Of course, a good meal or sampling the local Rum with family and friends while overlooking the bay is another good reason to visit San Juan Del Sur.
Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts will love the wide variety of beautiful birds and fascinating jungle creatures. One of our favorite things to do is to take the short trip to La Flor to see the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles laying eggs and their hatchlings emerging from their nests and heading out to sea. Please go with a guide and don’t step on them! There are plenty of monkeys in the trees and exotic birds that you’ll see regularly. Other wildlife in the area include Sloths, Ocelots, Marguays, Coatimundi and more… these may be more difficult to spot.
We’re located on some of the best beaches in Nicaragua. Playa Maderas is one of Nicaragua’s best, consistent surf breaks. Majagual is a calm beach that is great for swimming. You can even rent surfboards or boogie boards at the beach and can buy a snack or a cold beer. Playa Marsella is a nice beach that is a short 10 minute drive south. Surf by day or check out the restaurants. It’s a nice alternative to driving to San Juan Del Sur.

Casa De Mono is owned by a Dave, Carol and Ed. All 3 of us live in Southern California. We work quite a bit and enjoy traveling when we're able to get away. Our style is somewhat adventurous, we like to go to exotic places and try different things. We hope to spend more time in Nicaragua as we get older and work less.
Carol purchased this house in 2008
When we arrived in Nicaragua, we stayed in San Juan Del Sur and loved it. The Nicaraguan people were wonderful and the expats were cool and very interesting - I can see why they never leave. After looking at land in various places, we picked our area 'Balcones de Majagual' because the beaches were so beautiful and secluded. In addition, the developers believed in preserving nature and building in a way that uses local, sustainable woods and building materials. We were sold on it, bought a lot and decided to build a custom home. Our home, Casa De Mono, was finished at the end of 2008. At Casa De Mono, you get lots of nature, the best beaches in Nicaragua, yet are still close enough to the nightlife of San Juan Del Sur - about a 20 minute drive.
Our house is one of the most private in our community and positioned so you won't see or hear the neighbors. We have a very nice private infinity pool and GREAT outdoor space. We're one of the closest to the beach as well. An easy 15 minute walk down the private nature path. The drive is just a few minutes.
We stayed at mono casa for three nights and did not venture out by car. Not easy to navigate the roads. The beach was pretty. Not an easy walk to the beach with flip flops. Fun to watch movies in the living room. The layout of mono casa is amazing. I highly recommend massages by the pool.
This is the second time we have rented this house. This time we stayed for 2 weeks. It is one of the best houses in the area. The beach it has access to is fantastic and very private. There is a restaurant in that beach that serves the best fish tacos we have ever had.
Everyday the local monkeys would come for a visit. The one day there were 15 monkeys passing over the house.
I would highly recommend this house for anyone!! We are planning our next stay now.
No wonder everyone loves this completely modern private home. Fabulous Views, spectacular pool, comfy beds, super equipped kitchen, outdoor BBQ...I SERIOUSLY WANT TO LIVE HERE!
Everything from arrival to end of our entire stay was perfect. We were overwhelmed as we first entered our new home away from home...Outdoor living at it's best! Casa Mono is set up with a completely private outdoor living area with a beautiful infinity pool, tasteful living room sofa's & coffee table, picnic table eating area, rocking chairs and lounge chairs. A beautiful outdoor natural stone shower was fabulous to rinse off all the sand after a day at the beach which is only 5 minutes away. The bedrooms & private bath are in a well designed separate little building with the most comfy beds and fabulous fan that keep us comfortable throughout the night. Did I mention there is a view of the pool and the ocean from there too! If you need a television & video's, well yes they have that too although why would you. Security is present but respectful. Wireless wifi kept us in touch with family and friends at home. Look no further, this is the one you want!
Casa de Mono is a great vacation home to rent if you're looking to stay near Playa Maderas. Make sure you rent a 4x4 vehicle because the last couple of miles to get to the house aren't paved and the roads can get quite bumpy. Go into town and buy food, condiments, paper towels, drinks etc before heading to the house. When we walked into Casa de Mono our jaws dropped at how gorgeous the house is! You walk into the outdoor living area and see an awesome infinity pool and the amazing ocean view! The house is luxurious and private. We went in November so lots of lush green trees surrounded the home cooling off the house. There is no air conditioning but there are lots of ceiling fans and if it gets too hot you can just jump in the pool. I'm a huge fan of the outdoor living area. It's where we spent most of our time eating, drinking, watching the monkeys play in the trees and enjoyed lots of sunrises & sunsets. There's a grill so you can easily BBQ & the kitchen is open to the outside so if you're cooking you still can feel like you're a part of the party. The beds are super comfy & there are bathrooms in each bedroom. Everything was clean and I felt safe the entire time. The house is very close to a beautiful secluded beach. Most of the time we would be the only ones on the beach.
Our first experience in Nicaragua was great. If you have navigation service available we recommend you rent a vehicle at the airport so that you have more freedom to explore Nicaragua on your drive to Casa de Mono. Once we arrived at Casa de Mono not only were we impressed with the location, but the house was well laid out and blended in perfectly with the jungle atmosphere. Without disturbing nature too much, you still got to enjoy resort like living. It was nice to have a bathroom in each bedroom, but our favorite part of the house was how well the kitchen, living room and pool connected. We originally had planned to eat in town most days, but our location was so pleasant that most days we made breakfast and enjoyed the sunrise and made dinner to enjoy the sunset. In the mornings it was also lots of fun to see the monkies hanging out right in front of the pool. They were just like us, being lazy and taking in the sun. If you're looking for a beautiful house submerged in a beautiful, tropical environment, this is the place. During our stay the weather was mostly warm, somedays humid, other days perfect. We had one day of heavy rain and beautiful lighting. Since the weather was perfect we got to sit in the outdoor living area where we listened to the rain and thunder and watch the lighting. Oh we do recommend you wear mosquito repellant at all times, where ever you are in Nicaragua, they are everywhere. Also, pack a couple of mosquito repellant candles to light up while your hanging out, they help keep the buggers away. The mosquito situation was due to the time of year we were there, during cooler weather they are probably not around much. Overall, a beautiful place, beautiful town and beautiful views, with an easy walk down to a beautiful beach.
This is a swanky and stylish party platform set down in the dry forest in the hills north of SJDS. For those wondering if this is the vacation rental for you, here are some considerations:
* It was way too hot for us. However, we were there in the hot/dry season of (I think) Feb - May or so. The pool kept us alive, but the Westward facing patio basically turned into a brick pizza oven from noon to 4:00, with little to no sanctuary under fans or in the shade. (No AC, of course).
* The dry/hot season also means the "jungle" is 90% brown and devoid of leaves. As we were there for the birds and nature, this was a disappointment, but may not matter to other renters. Apparently it is lovely green jungle at other times of the year. On the other hand, you get a better view of the ocean, and less bugs during the dry season!
* In our opinion, Casa De Mono, and possibly the adjoining Casa Fransesca, are the best places to rent in Majagual. The view is unobstructed and you don't have the community road passing right in front of your house, like many of the other units. You truly will not see another house. HOWEVER, you should note that Fransesca is right next door, and you may hear the occupants.
* The pool was private enough to skinny-dip, but the pool guy does show up un-announced, so watch out!
* The kitchen was generally nicely provisioned, compared to other houses we have rented. We suggest you bring a roll of paper towels for napkins as that was not included, and don't count on there being salt, pepper, sugar, etc.
* The dirt road is not a problem. It is gravel, but not overly rough and not dangerous or risky in any way. The only real issue with the road in is that it adds an annoying few minutes to your drive into town. Rent a Tyota Hilux PU, perfect vehicle for anywhere in Nicaragua.
* The birdwatching was weird: not a lot of volume (don't know if that changes in the wet season), but several very interesting solo or pair sightings (pigmy owls, 2 trogons, puff bird, turquoise mot-mot, caracaras, cuckoos, black hawk, and maybe a couple toucans across the valley.)And a troop of Howlers passed by a couple times. No sloth. Not even a scorpion. For additional birding, go to the la Flor turtle sanctuary and walk left at the beach to an estuary.
* The beach is nice and you will have it mostly to yourself. You can walk left to the next beach for restaurants.
A nice day-trip is to Coco beach resort. They have a beach restaurant and lovely walking beach.
