We had an absolutely wonderful time at the house. The house is exactly as described. The AC works great in the BR’s. The rest of the house is fine without. Just open the windows and let the air flow through. There are also a couple of large floor fans you can move around. It was just two of us, but the house would be comfortable for eight people. The pool is refreshing and just a few steps from the beach. The beach is just under 2 miles of dark sand. Playa Tivives is a great little beach community. There are three restaurants (two in the community, one just outside) that are great places to grab some dinner. Pay attention to days and hours of operation. There is a little convenience store for very basics. You want to stock up on food supplies in San Jose at Walmart or plan a drive down to Jaco. There is a great grocery store Auto Mercado just before you get to Jaco at an intersection with several American spots (Starbucks, KFC) This place is actually better than the Walmarts in San Jose. We had dinner at a great spot on the way to Jaco called Vista Mar. Go out on a limb and eat at some of the other spots along other area roads for good Costa Rican food. One observation. You may have to navigate some tree debris that washes on the beach during the rainy season. Aside from this the beach is beautiful. One of the other reviews mentions you can’t swim in the ocean. We had no issue getting in the ocean. Finally, Ami is terrific responsive host.
Communication was wonderful with Ami. The house is perfect for a family stay or couples. Only downside is not being able to swim in the ocean. We weren’t told this ahead of time and feel it should be listed or made more clear in the description. You can’t swim in the ocean due to crocodiles and strong currents. The water is dirty and beach is covered with debris (whole trees of drift wood, lots of plastic containers, trash, tires, etc.). Listening to the waves and walks on the beach are nice, but we were expecting to be able to swim in the ocean. Having the pool was a major plus.
This property was built exactly as the pictures show. You can hear the ocean waves with the doors and windows closed. There is an A/C wall unit in each room and not in the open living space. The breeze blows through the house well with the windows open. This is how it was when I arrived. The waves and breeze, just beautiful. There is obvious natural wear and tear inside and outside of the property that is not shown in the pictures; loungers in the pool missing paint, rusting on metals inside due to ocean water. Pool was clean and the water felt so good on my feet. These things are natural occurrences and can be easily remedied. I brought my own towel and wash cloth. I didn't notice any wash cloths so you may want to bring your own. The white comforters and towels were clearly clean however they did have a few what looked like make-up residue. The ocean water was crystal clear sometimes and I took advantage. Very soft sand! If you go, make the drive to Hicaco... delish! All in all, I'll be back, hopefully by then there'll be some wear and tear updates.
The house was great, it was big enough to accommodate 4 adults and 4 kids ranging from 7 to 12. There is air conditioning in the bedrooms but not in the main house which at times could be very warm. There is two big floor fans but still can be warm.
The beach is nice but if you’re looking for a nice smooth sandy beach this is not your location. We saw a lot of crabs which the kids loved. They swam in the ocean, there is NO crocodiles in this location.
If you don’t want to travel to far for dinners there is two location close by, if you want to cook and have snacks by alot, the grocery stores are far. This is the only thing we didn’t like about the location. We would go back YES but we would by for a week worth of food and cook there.
This is in Tivives and Puntarenas is about 1hr (traffic etc) we were not impressed with Puntarenas itself and would not go back, very run down, dirty and for me it was hard to see all the straw animals. You are better to go towards Jaco, we found it a bit nicer and the restaurants better, take note of a few toil routes.
Overall great experience and nice house and pool.
