About David Carpita

I am an American (native of Montana) who worked abroad in banking and finance for 25 years before settling in Saint Remy de Provence since 1991 where we had a cooking school and boutique hotel for 23 years. Now fully retired and continuing to live in Saint Remy in our restored farmhouse 3 km to the west of town.

David Carpita purchased this house in 2001

Why David Carpita chose Provence

We purchased this delightful property to have a pied a terre in the heart of our beloved village of Saint Remy de Provence and often stay there when dining in town or just to have total immersion in the village life when we can get break from our country property. As we got on with the renovations, the little house came to life in such a charming way that we started calling it le maison de poupee or the 'doll house' and the name stuck.

What makes this house unique

You will enjoy the seamless access to the vibrant life of the village of Saint Remy in the heart of the medieval quarter with its arches and cobblestone streets. Shops are just steps away as is the famous Wednesday market and the 'petit marche' on Saturdays. The bakeries, shops and restaurants are just around the corner from you yet you will sleep peacefully at night insulated by old stones from any street noises. The maison is not large but you will appreciate the attention to detail, fine furniture, comfortable king size bed and an amazing kitchen with top end appliances so you can effortlessly turn out gourmet meals from your shopping from artisan suppliers.

Great location in the middle of St. Remy

  • 4 of 5

Charming 3 story row house just next to the Hotel de Sade in St. Remy. Fabulous location in the center of the old city. Everything is walking distance: great restaurants, grocery store, bakeries, shops. Perfect for Wednesday market!,This was a great spot for 5 days of exploration of Provence and the Luberon. The owner is very responsive to questions before and during the stay. The bedroom is extremely comfortable with beautiful natural light. Facilities of a well equipped kitchen allowed us to cook twice and enjoy our breakfast each morning. The only reasons I cannot rate 5 stars: bathroom is quite small and on a different floor from the bedroom. Bring a small flashlight/ torch for midnight visits to get down the stairs. Also, while two parking spots for the house are advertised to be available, there is a neighbor who always parked right in front of our door. The adjoining space is marked as handicap, and a third space is barely large enough for a smart car to fit! We were challenged to park, every day when we returned from our day trips. Other than that, this is a great place to stay.

Owner's Response: We are very pleased that our guests enjoyed their stay at our Doll House. There are some trade offs to be able stay in such proximity to shops and markets in a property as old as the Hotel de Sade (circa 15th century) but with all modern comforts. Even though the bathroom is small, it is fully functional and even has a full sized washing machine and dryer. We can’t convince the city council to let have one of the two parking spaces on the street assigned to us, so they remain “first come first served”. However, free 24/7 parking is available on public lots within easy walking distance and for overnight parking, you can usually find a spot on the boulevard just a few meters away. Refuge in the heart of Provence

  • 4 of 5

The Doll house is a cozy refuge in the center of old St Remy. For 4 days, we used it as a point of departure for exploring Provence. Each evening we prepared our dinner meal in the well provisioned kitchen, and relaxed in the comfortable salon. Everything in St Remy is a convenient walk...vegetables, fish, wine, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and shops of all kinds. It was a daily challenge to find an overnight parking space...often requiring several loops around town (which doesn't take long). But once found, any parking space is within a short walk of the Doll House.

Owner, David was friendly and helpful. We would gladly stay there again

Owner's Response: We are delighted they enjoyed their stay in the Doll House where everything is super convenient – except parking, as something has to give in the trade off of being in the historic center with its many advantages. There are two parking spaces immediately in front of the Doll House but they are first come, first served. Fortunately the nearby parking lots usually have lots of room so all is not lost. We would be delighted if they return for another stay in our property.

Comfortable & Charming Historical Property

  • 5 of 5

The Doll House is a lovely, comfortable and nicely renovated historical property inside of the ring road in the immediate city center, making it a perfect choice for exploring the many unique shops, historical sites and farmers market in downtown Saint-Remy-de-Provence. The location is also a very convenient two minute walk to several fantastic bakeries and grocery stores, making it very easy to use the well-appointed kitchen to prepare meals in. The property is quite large inside, offering plenty of space for our family of four and convenient parking next to the property was available, making changeovers between day-trips and restaurants in various local Provençal towns a snap. Owners David and Nito provided loads of suggestions at our request on some very special restaurants from Saint-Remy to Carpentras, and also local attractions including a visit to the Pont du Gard, which was our a highlight of our visit to Provence. We would reserve The Doll House again on a future visit both for the property as well as for the valuable advice and support of the owners in helping us to make the most of our time in Provence.

A jewel in St. Remy

  • 5 of 5

We lodged in the Doll House for a week and found it to be a unique and wonderful experience. Although it has been carefully remodeled, it still retains many of the features from its original construction in the 1600s. We ate at least a few of our meals in and found that the kitchen was fully equipped. The rooms are small and we felt it could be a bit crowded for more than a couple. Best of all, it is located in the center of the town with all of the unique shops (and the remarkable Wednesday market) just a few steps from the front door.

The owner was quick to answer all of our questions. We hope to return to St. Remy and would definitely plan on a repeat stay.

Doll house was very sweet

  • 4 of 5

The doll house was very sweet and conveniently located to all the shops. The laundry and kitchen made it very convenient. It's great for a couple but I would not recommend this for more people. Also if you like to lounge on a sofa there isn't one. But for us, we came in late every night and went to bed! Shower had plenty of hot water. Just understand all rooms are very small but certainly doable. My husband and I just alternated and didn't use the bathroom at the same time. Also bedroom is on the second floor so you must carry your bags upstairs. Parking is a bit of a challenge. The parking space is shared by others and we never got to use the space in front of the house. But we parked along the street and didn't have far to walk. The owner is very nice and agreeable. I would certainly recommend this for someone who is looking for a Provence experience. It's very charming for a couple. We do not regret staying here and would do it again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very thoughtful review. There actually is a reading nook on the 1st floor, the single bed there has large pillows and can be used as a sofa. We hope you will be back again.

Doll House Review

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 (my wife and I along with our 20 and 18 year old) just returned from St Remy and spent 7 wonderful days at the Doll House. The owners are really terrific and very attentive. The house is adorable and easily fit all four of us. With all of the nooks and crannies and exposed beams, you really feel like you stepped back in time. That said, the owners have all modern conveniences and the house is very well equipped.

Saint Remy-de-Provence is a town set in the Alpilles with a history going back to Greco-Roman times, it is the quintessential Provençal village, with its boulevards shaded by sycamore trees encircling an ancient center with narrow streets and small squares enlivened by fountains. Nostradamus was born here in 1503 and Van Gogh painted many masterpieces at the nearby asylum of St. Paul.

A city with just 11,000 inhabitants, it has become internationally known with its numerous art galleries and a lively weekly open-air market on each Wednesday morning.
