This airy two-bedroom townhouse is DC living at its best. In the heart of historic LeDroit Park, mere steps to neighborhood favorites such as The Royal and Shaw's Tavern. Less than a 10-minute stroll to Howard University, Atlantic Plumbing Cinema, 9:30 Club, and the new Whole Foods. Five minutes to Howard Theatre, nearby shopping/dining, and the Shaw metro (green/yellow lines).
The two-story home features oodles of historic charm with modern conveniences. The downstairs foyer leads into a living/dining room with bay windows and eleven-foot ceilings. Pocket doors connect this space to the large kitchen with additional seating for two at the breakfast bar. Fully stocked with spices and cooking supplies, as well as a range of appliances from Instant Pot to waffle maker to blender. The back door from the kitchen opens onto a spacious back deck.
Upstairs you'll find a full bath with clawfoot tub, a main bedroom with a queen bed, bay windows, and television; and a second bedroom with queen bed, desk, and television. The townhouse is on a residential block but still in a decidedly urban area. You can generally hear normal street noise from passing trucks, etc. in the front (main) bedroom, so if you need total quiet to sleep you might want to plan on staying in the second bedroom instead.
I am happy to provide a free street parking pass upon request.

The house is well appointed and in a fantastic neighborhood. It was very clean and tidy. Kitchen had everything I needed and the bed was very comfortable. Would go back!
Good location to explore DC.
House exactly as described, very well stocked kitchen, some welcome additions of fresh coffee and tea, and the decor and finishing touches in the house make it very homey.
Host was friendly, clear communication and quick to respond.

Near main road and hospital. Emergency sirens all the time.
Great historic home close to the subway. Plenty of grocery stores within a 30 minute walk. Lovely back patio for wine on a warm day. Plenty of coffee! Wine opener was missing and owner had one sent the same day. We don’t usually watch TV, but the World Series was on ( and we’re from LA) and we were unable to figure out how to use either TV.

Just OK
We’ve stayed in many excellent short-term rentals via VRBO that deserved five-star ratings. To be fair to those exceptional stays, we can only rate this one as “just okay.”•The property is located at the intersection of a major thoroughfare and a very busy street, resulting in constant and significant traffic noise. The front (larger) bedroom was particularly affected, making it difficult for us to sleep. If you require both bedrooms, earplugs are a must. Additionally, the property is situated along the ambulance route to a nearby hospital—on one evening alone, we counted nine sirens passing directly under the bedroom window.•The furnishings, cabinets, appliances, and cookware are of lower quality, giving the space a budget feel. The owners could greatly improve the experience by upgrading essentials, such as replacing the warped and scratched pans.•While the rental was generally clean, we were disappointed to find dirty pots and pans placed back in the cabinets upon arrival. That said, we did enjoy our stay in DC, as the location was convenient. Despite the issues mentioned, the property itself was acceptable, but it didn’t stand out compared to other rentals we’ve experienced.

About the host
Your host
I first dipped my toe into the hospitality and home-sharing scene during grad school (many years ago!), renting out a literal air bed in a spare bedroom to travelers from all over the world. Since then I've had countless wonderful experiences staying in others' homes and hosting folks in my own.
Why they chose this property
Ledroit Park/Shaw truly is the heart of DC (and I can say that with some conviction after being born in Silver Spring and living over the years in Berwyn Heights, Capitol Hill, H St NE, Foggy Bottom, and Georgetown)! Geographically central, it's easy to get almost anywhere by foot, bike, or public transportation - a bike share station is only three block away, and the Shaw/Howard Metro (yellow and green lines) is a five minute walk. DC is full of great food but we have a particularly high density of diverse options within a fifteen minute walk. The townhouse is only steps away from the best nightlife in the city on U St., while still being insulated from the noise and crowds that can bring (though it is near bustling Florida Avenue which comes with some street noise from trucks and such - not the place for those seeking complete silence!).
The national mall is a thirty minute walk or three quick stops on the metro away, but you can also enjoy culture much closer to home at local staples like the 9:30 club, Howard Theater, the African American Civil War Museum, and much more. The Park at Ledroit has playgrounds for children and a dog park for pets to let out some energy, and just a bit further Crispus Attucks Park feels like an oasis in the city, perfect for picnics or a quiet afternoon with a book.
Ledroit Park has a unique character, and it's both architecturally distinct (one of the city's first "suburbs," masterminded in the 1870s by architect James McGill) and historically significant (by the 1920s it had become home to many of the country's most prominent Black intellectuals, artists, judges, and activists).
What makes this property unique
This is the perfect spot for those who want to feel like a local while being close to all the sites and action, coming home each day to a place you can relax and enjoy. Have a drink on the deck, whip up breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen, or even enjoy a soak in the clawfoot tub.
