Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Captains View is a cozy two bedroom beach house overlooking the southern bay of Cherokee Sound. The use of a 14ft boat and outboard motor is your additional rental option at the time of reservations .The front porch is definitely the most frequently used area of the home partly because of the view but also because it provides a shady, secluded, breezy spot to relax during your vacation. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee, read a book in the afternoon, or retire after a long day of bone fishing. The Pro kayak is a nice addition for fishing the shallows .

The House is situated only a few footsteps away from the Long Dock where you can swim ,fish ,tan ,picnic and relax. There are many flat sand bars to walk on during the low tides; they are great places to find beautiful shells and sea life . Early tides bring in the fish including the allusive 'Bonefish' that rome freely along the shallow banks of Southern Bay. 'The Long Dock ' and its uncounted wooden pieces has with stood many hurricanes sometimes with little reconstruction needed . This dock is a pillar for the community and is loved by the residents, as well as non residents , both old and young, have helped maintain its condition giving them use and enjoyment. There is loads of history to be found around Cherokee from the early days of the settlement so make sure to bring your walking tennis .There are networks of uncharted paths from several hundred of years ago to be explored . There was wooden boats ,vessels and smacks built for many years on the shore of the inner creek. The art work on the living room wall will reveal that time period . You can learn more stories like this by meeting friendly locals of Cherokee and hearing about the history of this place.

Guests can request access to Watching Bay beach, on the ocean side through a private development 'The Reserve at Watching bay '. There is property for sale , with a variety of vacant lot locations .This is all within walking distance, but bicycles are great for riding through town, especially if you need to go to the grocery store. You can also rent a vehicle in Marsh Harbour beforehand to get around the island in if you wish to leave Cherokee Settlement.

The uniqueness of this home is not only what it does have but it doesn’t have. By separating yourself from a land line phone (which we do not have in the home!) you can find other ways to entertain yourselves. Cell phones do work if needed . However, keep in mind that there is free wireless internet access available so you can bring your business with you if you insist! Cable TV will give and added option for relazation and news information if needed . We hope you will come enjoy a peaceful vacation with the ones you love at Captains View in Cherokee.

About Glenn Russell

I'm an out going bahamian .I love the outdoors, fishing ,free diving ,boating ,taking my wave runner out for a spin and off roading in a ATV or truck. I have knowledge and first hand experience of the area in and around Cherokee. I guide on the sea as well as the land .Deep sea charters and guided trips can be arranged and booked .If you have your own boat I can guide and help with sight seeing covering Cherokee area , central Abaco and its cays and almost any part of Abaco .Bird watching , remote beaches and deep woods trips are also an option for charter . Featured trips to Piggy Ville to feed the swimming pigs are very enjoyable . Deep forest fresh water caves are also a good guided tour .

Glenn Russell purchased this house in 1993

Why Glenn Russell chose Cherokee Sound

I purchased this home back in 1993 because of its panoramic sea-coast view. Captains View is named after its original owner Capt. Roy P. Russell J.P. This was his retirement home and may be mines as well one day! Although I didn't buy it initially to rent it out, after renovating it many friends and visitors asked me to open it up to the rental possibilities. In order to share the undiscovered area I have rented it only to a select few. This home is very precious to me and my daughters so I'm selective about who I rent to. With this VRBO being my first internet outreach, Even though i have rented for 22 years i will still only rent to a few and your satisfaction will repeat your stay.

What makes this house unique

The house is so ideally located that once you arrive the beach ,dock and water is all in your sight that's it for your transportation needs . Bonefish.....Bonefish on the door step .This can save on a rental car /van .Should you choose a rental car /van it can be parked close for easy access . Every where you want to go is accessible by foot, a bike or skateboard. If you come by boat the water is deep enough off the long dock that you can anchor out in the bay and see it from the porch. The two orange kayaks and the 3 person yellow kayak can be launched right from the bridge creek beach. The front porch will offer you the best sunrises and sunsets. The front porch is always a good place to avoid the sun and catch conversation with guest or locals. For people with young children they can watch their kids play safely on the beach less than 50 feet away from the porch. Another unique benefit is you don't have to go far to catch a nights meal. Simply cast out your hook and line of the long dock and your sure to catch a feast. The front and back areas of the house are great for children and adults hanging around ,talking, laughing and listening to music. You can crack coconuts ( careful they can stain )and make coconut water, eat sea grapes, cocoplums , catch fish and retire after eating to a nice movie in the living room. Snorkeling areas are within walking distance and the boat can get to reefs that are offshore .

Everything works!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Captains View in Cherokee Sound. We were most impressed by the fact that everything in the house worked as advertised. Having rented in The Bahamas many times in the past, we were accustomed to the typical, low water pressure, intermittent electricity and sub par utensils etc. that are typically the norm, but to our pleasure that was not the case here. Plenty of AC, the wifi worked perfectly, and the kitchen was equipped with all that we needed, and more. Thank you Glenn for sharing your slice of heaven.

The Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our idea of a perfect vacation is low key, beautiful views, fishing, beaching, and relaxation. Captain’s View is the perfect place and always our first choice for a Bahamian getaway.

There are many convenient flights into Marsh Harbour from the U.S. and renting a car from the airport is simple if you arrange it ahead of time. We stop at Maxwell’s grocery in town to stock up on food, Jimmy’s liquor for Sand’s beer and then a local restaurant in the harbor for a quick bite before heading down to Cherokee Sound.

Once in Cherokee Sound, we let paradise take over. Glenn’s villa is beautiful, clean, comfortable and well-appointed with everything you need for a great stay. The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. Glenn has done a great job decorating, making the cottage inviting with its nautical theme and art.

We especially enjoy the kayaks. We like to take them around the point to Little Bay where the beach is gorgeous, the water is an unreal shade of turquoise and dolphins often come in to fish and play. We bring our Eno hammocks and string them up between the Casuarina trees and relax. Our favorite saying on this little stretch of quiet, deserted beach is ‘cue the dolphins.’ They are so much fun to watch. The water is so clear, you can stand in water to your shoulders and see your toes. Amazing! An occasional stingray will pass by as well. The crystal-clear water makes them easy to watch gliding by. From this beach, you can take a short walk across the rocks to the ocean side to explore a different view.

The village is quaint with friendly people. There is a small grocery store with most staples you might need. The marina with a small laundry on the other side of the village sells bait for fishing and Glenn has rods. A short walk from the cottage, a small shell museum has recently opened. You can visit it on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. A local artist has painted beautiful murals on the walls, including one of the famous long dock.

A short drive away is a quirky little place called Pete’s Pub. It is a great place for drinks and conversation. It is an outdoor bar styled like a shipwreck and the food is always delicious!

It is hard to pick our favorite thing about Captains’ View, but the view from the front porch is at the top of the list. You sit on the porch, with the water stretched out in front of you and the rest of the world melts away. We cannot wait for our next trip!

A piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Looking for a Paradise hideaway? Look no further!!! Our family stayed at Captains View for a week and to summarize it my 8 year old grandson said "Nona (that's what he calls me) this is so amazing how the water is so beautiful". Quaint little town with friendly people and the Captains View is an awesome place to stay as it is right on the beach with, sit on the porch with your morning cup of coffee and enjoy the view that is beyond beautiful. The little grocery store has all the essentials but suggest stopping in Marsh Harbor to buy any alcoholic beverages. We fished, caught fish and cooked and grilled. Walked the sandbanks and collected many shells. If you are thinking about making this your vacation spot, go for it, you won't regret it. The owner is very accommodating and goes out of his way to make sure all guest have what they need to enjoy, relax and swim, etc. we will be back!!!!
