About Marie and Lorenzo

Marie and Lorenzo moved to Tuscany in 1993. Lorenzo is originally from Turin in the North of Italy and Marie is from Leamington Spa in the UK. We met in England where Lorenzo was studying English in 1998 and we were married in Italy on Lake Orta in the year 2000. We lived in a small village on the lake for 3 years before moving to the beautiful region of Tuscany.

We bought Casa Colomba in 2006 and slowly and lovingly began its restoration. By 2010 we were able to open our home to guests and share with them the delights of this region.

By 2014 and by complete accident - or should we call it fate - we became fully-fledged property managers offering characteristic vacation homes in our small town.

We now manage 10 properties including our own and despite becoming property managers we still have day jobs for now at least! Lorenzo works in hospitality and customer service in a small family run hotel and Marie works part-time as an airline stewardess for a British airline.

Marie and Lorenzo purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Marie and Lorenzo chose Pisa Province

We bought Casa Colomba after searching for a property for more than a year and after seeing more than 40 properties.

Casa Colomba was not the type of property we were looking for as we had something a little smaller in mind!

At the time we were renting a small apartment in a village within the district of Vicopisano but we were desperate to buy our own property.

We both loved the village of Vicopisano and often walked around the historic centre wondering what lay behind the crumbling facades and huge wooden doors.

At the time there was not much on the market but friends had told us about a newly renovated property in the village so off we went to have a look at the outside.

The property looked good but it appeared much bigger than what we were looking for - however we spotted a 'For Sale' sign in the window of another nearby property which looked like an apartment on the first floor.

We made an appointment with the owner and couldn't believe what we'd stumbled across. The owners produced a huge iron key and unlocked two giant wooden doors on the ground floor.

Inside there was nothing but exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, earth on the floor and the calling for a lot of work!

Before we had even seen the rest of the house we were hooked by the romanticism of it all especially when we discovered that the property included a 12th Century residential tower.

What we thought was going to be an apartment turned out to be a 3-storey house with a garden full of original features and way beyond our budget and the rest is history!

With one floor completed and two more to go Casa Colomba is a labour of love and a project for life.

We named the house Casa Colomba as Colomba was the name of Marie's grandmother with whom she grew up with as well as being a girl's name Colomba which means 'Dove' in Italian.

What makes this apartment unique

We fell in love with Casa Colomba because of its sense of history, original features and its location.

All the rooms have beamed ceilings and we have either restored or replaced the hand made terracotta pavement tiles.

The 12th Century tower is unique and although the tower is not obvious when you first walk into the house it is very evident from the rear of the property.

It is amazing to think that the tower would have had another two floors during its heyday in the Middle Ages but due to the fortification of the village by the Renaissance engineer Fillipo Brunelleschi the residential towers of Vicopisano were cut down in size in order to spot the enemy should he arrive.

To have a garden is a bonus and a luxury in a Medieval historic centre. The garden is South West facing and is a complete sun trap with beautiful views over the hills and Medieval towers.

The other unique benefit is the location. In the historic centre we are just a short walk to all the village amenities but also just 100 metres in the other direction we are in the heart of the country surrounded by pine-covered hills and sunflower fields in the summer. There are plenty of walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness and abilities.

Finally we love the location of Vicopisano because apart from the countryside we also love the sea and in just 30 minutes we can escape the heat of the summer sun at the beach or head for the higher hills in the more remote villages.

Another unique benefit is that we live in an authentic working Tuscan small town not yet discovered by mass tourism but close enough to visit the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Volterra and Pisa's wine region.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed 1 week in the fantastic apartment Casa Colomba. The proprietors, Marie and Lorenzo, had bought the tower and recently renovated it so everything is new.

When we arrived, we were received by Marie. They live downstairs, which is very practical if you have any question or problem.

Everything was super clean which is a important point for us! The apartment has many appliances that make your stay better : a toaster, espresso café machine, washing machine.

There is wireless internet !

And a loggia with beautiful views were we had breakfast and dinner.

Marie and Lorenzo are the perfect hosts, always very helpful and at the same time giving you privacy.

The weak points would be: the very steep stair, no dishwasher and the TV did not have many foreign channels (but we did not watch TV during our stay, so we did not care).

The apartment is ideally placed to visit Pisa and Lucca (about 25 min. by car). Other places of Tuscany need 1-2 hour drive (San Gimignano, Siena)

I would recommend Casa Colomba to my friends, we loved it ! In fact, you could spend the holidays in the apartment without going outside

Lovely location for a quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a quiet base to explore Tuscany, you should definitely check out Marie and Lorenzo's beautifully refurbished tower apt. In Vicopisano. We recently enjoyed 6 nights there - the apartment had everything we needed and was just as pictured. Marie and Lorenzo are the perfect hosts - very responsive, personable and eager to share their love of the Italian lifestyle! They were both very helpful in arranging transportation and activities to make the most of our stay. We loved our pasta making class with Chef Olimpia. If you are lucky enough to time your visit during Vicopisano' annual Medieval festival, you are in for a real treat! Thank you Marie and Lorenzo for your hospitality and kindness during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in your apartment!

great location, great place, great hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the middle of the 2017 heatwave, absolutely roasting. Too hot in many ways but we didn't let that stop us enjoying our visit. The apt is great and Marie and Lorenzo are brilliant. We had a great wine/cheese tasting tour with them which was a lot of fun and the wine with lunch was so fresh and enjoyable. We also did the cooking class with Chef Olympia which also was fun and we learned quite a few things. We finally got around to making our own pasta which is something we always wanted to do. We didn't rent a car as we wanted to enjoy the food and drink and it was ok. We used public transport to get to Pisa (bus) and to get to Florence (bus and train). It was easy to do. If you want to go wider and further (e.g. beach) suggest getting a car. The village is sleepy but has everything you need and I think is very authentic for this part of the world. We tried most of the restaurants in town. The pizza place is good, we had 4 pizza's in our week there. We also enjoyed the food at the old post office restaurant. If you like wine and getting some good local stuff at a very reasonable price you can 'pour your own' into bottles at the local shop. Novel and tasty. One thing that I haven't yet mentioned is how helpful and fun Marie and Lorenzo are we really enjoyed having their knowledge and experience on tap. Nothing was too much trouble and they really are brilliant hosts. Thank you so much guys for all your help and hopefully our paths will cross again in the near future! Ed & Dee

Beautiful apartment in the most stunning corner of the world!

  • 5 of 5

Being natural sceptics we weren't sure what to expect when we booked our stay at Casa Colomba, but as soon as we arrived we realised that we had arrived in Tuscan paradise! Vicopisano was the perfect setting for our holiday and, although we packed our days with walking, shopping, sight seeing, beach going and day trips to the famous cities nearby, we came away at the end of our week feeling relaxed. Marie and Lorenzo were delightful- so helpful with restaurant bookings etc - and their invaluable handbooks of things to do and places to eat kept us in the know about the best places to go all week. And as for the apartment... well, it was impossible for us to believe that we could be lucky enough to stumble upon such an amazing place to stay. It really is as good as it looks and if you have the chance to stay at Casa Colomba I can only say - do it!

This is Italy at its finest. We picked this VRBO with the idea that a full month in Italy required a restful beginning, about 12 days. Vicopisano is a small town in Tuscany and it appeared to be just the ticket. The town and Casa Columba did not disappoint. Nestled on a quiet street, a casual walk to town central, Casa Columba is the perfect place to begin, or end, your visit to Italy. The apartment is located in a restored 14th century building, providing all the amenities one would need to settle in and begin enjoying Italy.

About the apartment: The bed is firm but not too firm. The kitchen well stocked for your arrival and there is television and books provided if one is so inclined. The living area provides plenty of moving about room and the sunroom is a relaxing, sun drenched room in which to do just that, relax. There are steps from the street to the apartment. We counted 33. Although they seem daunting at first glimpse, we found them to be an opportunity to get our bodies in just a little bit better shape. Indeed, we looked at the steps as the finishing touches on a very pleasant after lunch or dinner walk. Why they even assisted us, (we told ourselves) in reconciling our diets, (non existent in Italy), with coffee and creamed filled sweet pastry in the morning and pasta and wine at night.

Now for the real reason “Casa Colomba” is a five-star selection. It is the owners, Lorenzo and Marie! They are a genuine, hard-working Italian family, (actually Marie is from the UK), with whom you fall in love with in an instant. When you first arrive, they welcome you with open arms, take time to show you around and, in our case, joined us for our first Prosecca and nibbles dinner at one of the local pizzeria’s. They manage many units but own the one we stayed in and they do it all with smiles abounding. They were a lot of fun to be around and responded quickly to any questions we may have had about the apartment, the town or the area. I have to mention the town chicken. There is a chicken somewhere in Vicopisano that was never told not to cockle- doodle-doo every single hour of every single morning. Place a fan in your room for white noise and you will never know it's there.

I give Casa Colomba a five-star rating. The reasons: The apartment? Clean, beautiful, more than functional and wonderfully situated down the street from the town square. The town? We absolutely love Vicopisano. Marie and Lorenzo? They are the icing on the cake

Owner's Response: Dear Tim, Thank you so much for your lovely review, we love the way you describe how Casa Colomba is nestled down a quiet lane just a stroll away from the village square. It was wonderful to hear that you liked the space in the apartment, it really is a wonderful space for just two people, with the fully equipped kitchen, sun room, living room and tower bedroom. By the way the tower part of the house actually dates back to the 11th Century! You were both such great guests to have around and we had great fun catching up with you at the local pizzeria and sipping Prosecco! We must say that we were very impressed that you got out and about to see all the sights all on public transport. It’s great for our future guests to know this as some prefer not to hire a car. Finally, we must let you know about the fate of the chicken or should we say the confused rooster! We are so sorry that he woke you up in the early hours and we realise how frustrating this must have been, as you know we were trying to liase with the neighbour who owned the rooster to move him to another of their properties out of town. After much negotiation, we are pleased to say that Mr Rooster is no longer in the neighbours garden. Thank you so much again for finding us, you were great guests and we hope you come back and visit us again in the future. Warmest wishes Marie and Lorenzo

I couldn't have imagined a more perfect honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

Marie and Lavinia were incredible hosts from the minute I booked the apartment for my honeymoon. They were incredibly prompt with their messages, and very organized. They had prepared documents filled with recommendations of what to do in the area. I wanted to move a few of the tours around, and they accommodated me with no issues. When I finally arrived in Italy, Lavinia stayed up late after my delayed flight to make sure she welcome me and my husband into the apartment. It was EVEN BETTER THAN THE PICTURES. Marie and Lavinia had prepared little surprises for us in the apartment (I won't ruin the surprise for you!) and showed us around. It was as if a really good friend had lent us their incredible apartment from which to explore the amazing sights of Tuscany. Because of their planning, I was able to see beautiful sunflower fields near the apartment, get a private olive tour, get restaurant suggestions for the best fish and pasta in town -- and feel like a local in the cute town of Vicopisano. After four incredible nights in Tuscany, and short visits to Lucca, Pisa, and the beach towns of west Italy, I couldn't have imagined a better apartment to do it all from. Thank you Marie and Lavinia for making our honeymoon so special. It wouldn't have been the same without your home. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
