Gillam Bay on the island of Green Turtle Cay is a tranquil refuge far removed from the rest of the hectic world. This cove with its one and a quarter mile crescent white sand beach lies on the eastern side of the island, where it joins the Atlantic at the place where House on the Point sits on the water’s edge.
House on the Point is a secluded oceanfront cottage with two bedrooms, a full bath and kitchen, a comfortable living room, and a spacious deck, located on the edge of three quiet tropical acres. Step out and enjoy our private ocean beach or the calm bay waters just a few feet from the deck, where a cool sea breeze is always blowing. Spectacular views of the ocean, nearby islands, and tropical gardens are at every window. Cook your catch in our roomy kitchen after a Goombay Smash on the deck. We provide a CD/iPod player, and a short-wave/AM/FM radio should you desire. Check up on your email with our WiFi, or spend a quiet night reading that new novel. Whatever you choose to do, total privacy is yours.
Our family of four currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama. My mother co-owns the property and lives in Punta Gorda, Florida, and is a well known island regular. We come back to the island often to relax and refresh. Our caretaker Patricia McIntosh has been with us for 25 years and is the reason our guests have such a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1984
The main house on our three acre property has been our family vacation home for almost 30 years. We have rented House on the Point to vacationers for many years, and stay there ourselves when we want to be right on the water.
The village of New Plymouth is a short ride away, where shopping and casual dining are available. Bluff House and Green Turtle Club, on White Sound, are also close by and provide fine dining and night life activities. There are experienced local guides for fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Or you can snorkel right off the beach. Walk out the door and hunt for shells along Gillam Bay. Nearby boat rentals are available, and you can tie up at our private dock after a day exploring the reef. Cruise the island and head into town with a golf cart rental. Bicycle and kayak rentals are available as well.
We've been to the Abacos a number of times, but this was our first time to GTC. We arranged our vacation dates specifically so we could stay here. The view is absolutely amazing and you have a great, quiet beach right there. We rented a boat and went around to a number of the other cays, but would often return back home in the afternoon as nothing really beat our own beach. I can't say enough about the view and the solitude. We visited Lowe Art Gallery just down the road, saw his art, and heard about GTC in earlier days, which was neat. It's only about 7-10 minutes to walk to town, though I don't recommend it when it's hot. The dock is about a 3 minute walk from the house in Black Sound. The wifi worked great. I didn't have a phone, but Tricia was very responsive to email for any questions. The only limits are that the AC is only units in the bedroom. The breeze was great and we didn't miss it during the day, but there was a loud frog, so we wanted to close up at night and the unit struggled to cool the bedroom. I wonder how it would be when it gets hot in the summer months.
We loved the House on the Point. It has the most wonderful, beautiful, peaceful, private surroundings! The views are incredible and you have access to some gorgeous beaches and snorkeling. The bedrooms get super cool with the window units and the breezes are strong enough that no central air is fine. The kitchen has what you need and it is such a charming and comfortable bungalow! Again - we adored it and did not want to leave. We also enjoyed staying on Green Turtle for the first time - such a cool island. Thanks so much for letting us enjoy your slice of heaven. We also are grateful for Patricia's help!
My now fiance & I stayed here for a week over the new year. We got engaged right in the backyard on the beach where we were the only people we saw all day! Amazing place. Very special. Wake up, make breakfast, make a drink and enjoy the sun. Golf carted into town and local restaurants for dinner at a different place. Retire to waiting the moon and star on the back porch listening to the waves. Repeat everyday. Perfect. Highly recommend getting your groceries on Treasure Cay before you come to the island and prices are double but they have just about everything in case you forget something. We are already looking at our schedules for when to return. Mike, the owner, was extremely helpful w everything and Patricia, the caregiver, was very nice and available if needed but luckily we didn't really need anything! Be back ASAP!
We found house on the point after an long search for just the right place for our family of 4. We live in a rural area of BC and generally travel to Mexico since the flights are cheap. We had lots of travel miles build up so wanted to take our teenagers on the family trip we've always dreamed of! We aren't resort people so were looking for a quiet area with amazing beaches, snorkeling and friendly people.
We were thrilled that GTC and the House On the Point were the exact fit! Our sons ages 15 & 17 loved the fact that they could fish, snorkel and even lobster right off the beach at the front of the house. We rented a golf cart for the entire time and had great adventures exploring the Island. We ate out very rarely but when we did the meals and service were good. The house was basic but had everything we needed to cook with (we are big cooks) and the beds were comfortable. The whole house was clean and perfect our our purposes. The caretakers Patricia and her husband were awesome. They found fishing equipment for the boys, rented us kayaks and were there with assistance any time it was needed.
The most impressive thing about GTC and really the rest of hone Bahamas that we experienced was that the people were amazingly welcoming and friendly! No matter where we went we treated as if we were friend or family instead of tourists! I can't say enough about the people we met in the Bahamas! On GTC you can leave your purse and camera on the beach and go snorkeling and not worry for a second that someone might steal it. Most times it's because you're the only people on the beach but really it's because the people are so wonderful! We will be back many times! One of our best vacations ever!
P.S. The boys say that it was the amazing lobstering that made the trip! They became quite the lobster fisherman on the trip. We had fresh lobster at least every third day for dinner and for breakfast many days as well!
30 years ago we spent our honeymoon on Green Turtle Cay. We looked for the same little cottage, but could not find it so decided to stay at the House on the Point...what a wonderfully delightful decision. We were greeted by Patricia at the dock and brought to the house...which we found out was next door to the one we had stayed at 30 years ago! We could not have had a better "second honeymoon" The island has not changed that much and the people are as friendly as ever. We rented a golf cart for the 12 days we were there and thoroughly explored the whole island...the North Beach road is quite treacherous. We were within walking distance to town and a short ride to the Green Turtle Club, Pineapples Bar and the Jolly Roger. Food at McIntoshes was great as were the Goombay Smash's at the Blue Bee. We were treated to a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony and served dinner afterwards...a wonderful surprise. Take time to visit the museum. It is a wonderful way to learn the history of the island. We spent most days just relaxing on the beach. We rented a power boat and went to Hopetown and back in a day which was alot of fun. My husband kayaked out to the island and around the bay for about 4 hours one day and snorkeled a bit out there. We almost were able to walk out on the sand bar to the house on the island. We hope it will not be another 30 years before we go back!
I have stayed numerous places on Green Turtle Cay and enjoyed most...but this House on the Point was simply perfect. The location has a secluded feel to it even though you are close enough to town to easily walk. The tranquility and the oceans energy is evident from the moment you step onto the property which is somewhat surrounded on all three sides by the water. Enjoying my coffee on the back porch or a glass of wine to close out the day was a highlight of our stay. My husband and I actually spent hours beach combing those secret little coves out the back door. We found an abundance of shells, my husband's first (and only thus far) sea bean and a beautiful tumbled piece of green sea glass...also a first time find. Hours could be spent on the nearby coral rock areas collecting curbs for a tasty dish or as a treat for the locals as they are a highly favored food source.
All in all...HOTP did not disappoint... in fact...I can't wait for another opportunity to stay at this understated piece of paradise.
