Chestnut Oak Farm is a luxurious western-style lodge retreat on a 90 acre horse farm near the base of Old Rag Mountain. The lodge was constructed in 2009 using granite blocks from the farm and huge Virginia pine logs in a western style of rustic elegance. The lodge is surrounded by decks and porches to take in the magnificent view over Hidden Valley, Old Rag Mountain, the farm's twin ponds, and the horses grazing in the fields. The lodge is equipped with a Chef's Kitchen, huge dining room (we have seated sixteen), double-sided fireplace, baby grand piano, screened porch, and covered porch. The main lodge house has three Master Bedrooms, and two other large bedrooms with a shared bath. Downstairs is a walkout game room with foosball, ping pong, bar, and a fire pit/movie pit with 52' screen TV. The outdoor 8 person hot tub is steps away, overlooking the pond.
150 feet down the hill below the pond is the 'Guest' Treehouse. The treehouse is a cedar sided two level cabin-style house which sleeps six, with full bath and kitchen--and an optional fire pole exit for the adventurous. This treetop aerie has to be seen to be believed!
The farm has a small herd of horses, two alpacas (Mike and Ike), and a growing assortment of other farm animals including peacocks. We have hiking trails on the property. A fantastic network of both gravel and paved roads fans out from the farm for incredible short and long distanced cycling routes. Or you can leave the farm to hike the incredible local trails or fish the local streams, or visit some of the local wineries or organic farms. We are 35 miles from Charlottsville, and 82 miles from Washington DC.
Caretakers live onsite and can help out with questions, firewood, directions, and even with provisioning if desired. They are happy to arrange spectacular custom-guided trail rides from a local stable in the surrounding mountains--even overnight camping trips.

About Richard Smith
Our family has cherished this special farm since we bought in 1995. Since building the new house, we have shared it with numerous friends and families who come out to regroup, renew, and get inspired by the natural beauty of the place.
Richard Smith purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1995
Why Richard Smith chose Rapidan
Most beautiful place we had ever seen in Virginia. We had been camping, hiking, climbing and biking in this area for years, and fell more in love with it every time we visited. We bought it to create a place for families to bond. Great place for family reunions and get-togethers.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
The area is uniquely rich in character. The edge of the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge is flush with beautiful organic farms, wineries, and incredible cycling and hiking. Great base to visit Charlottsville and Monticello (35 miles), Luray (30 miles), Skyline Drive (18 miles), Sperryville (12 miles), Little Washington (15 miles), Flint Hill (17 miles),Orange (15 miles) and to take advantage of countless small antique shops and artist galleries that are close by.

OUR OWN Great Wolf Lodge
The title of the review was what our grand children said when they first got there. This place is so beautiful and such a wonderful place for a large group to get together. Inside and out the owners have taken all steps to share a beautiful luxury location with us renters. From large wrap around porches to screened in relaxation, whole house sound system, game room, ponds to fish in, tree house to sleep in, fire pits to enjoy in the evening and a hot tub looking at the sunset. Could not have been more grand.
Relaxing, beautiful, mountain getaway!
House has everything you will need. Kitchen is wonderful and spacious. Pond is full of bass and the horses love apples. Tree house is cool and has all the comforts of home.
Wonderful, relaxing get-away
The stay at the lodge was by far the most relaxing and enjoyable part of my recent vacation. It was a complete escape from the every day and provided peace, quite and a chance to slow down and enjoy time with family and be around a lot more nature than we get at home. The lodge itself is amazing! It is grand (an understatement), with all modern amenities, but also rustic, gracious and incredibly warm and inviting. Everything we could need was right there in the house or on the property. We didn't stay in the treehouse, but did check it out-- that alone would have been sufficient for a stay as it was a complete house. There was more than enough to do on site, but it wasn't hard to take a nearby excursion to the mountains. One of the most enjoyable aspects was the stunning view. What a treat to have an unobstructed view of the sun striking the Old Rag during the morning and to see the horses playing in the pasture below. Also comforting to have Penny (the caretaker) close by. We didn't see anyone during our stay, but happy to know that someone was nearby if need be, and she couldn't be nicer when we spoke!
The house would be ideal for a large family, multiple family get-away, or family reunion.
It was a privilege to stay there and hard to leave!
What a pleasure it was to enjoy this amazing home for a recent visit to Virginia. The home is a fabulous space filled with authentic log features and the warmth of a real family. It was filled with lovely pictures and amenities that made you feel right at home. The views were incredible and breathtaking. Would definitely rent this house again if I was back in the same area
We are group of 11 people who spend 3 days at Richard's farm for the holiday, which is really nice place!!!
Don't be fooled by the photos which seem a little bit outdated. The actual place is way better than those photos. I think lots of improvement were made after those photos were taken. I hope Richard could upload some new photos to prove I'm not lying :)
There are lots of activity you could do on the site such as Ping Pong, fishing, BBQ outside. The stereo is really good. There are also two ADORABLE alpacas which are not mentioned in the overview section!!!! They are just so cute.
Anyway, it's really great experience for me and my friends, I wish I could visit here again!!
You all were wonderful guests, and thanks for leaving the place so shipshape.
You are 100% correct that the photos are outdated, and we will be re-shooting the property and posting them on VRBO shortly.
Glad you enjoyed Mike and Ike!
Family, friends and I just spent a week at this beautiful country estate/horse farm. Although there are many wonderful sights and activities to enjoy in the surrounding area, none of us felt the need to do so. The "Chateau" itself is beyond words in regards to its rustic elegance. The tree house was great! Almost every possible convenience is available throughout the house and property and if you experience any trouble with anything, the wonderful Ms. Penny is an efficient, personable caretaker who can solve any difficulty you may, but probably won't encounter. I could go on and on but the visceral experience is what really counts.
One more thing, our group's age ranged from 20 to 84 years old and if you have the heart of a child, I recommend this to any and all.
Hi Ronnie - Thanks so very much for your warm and enthusiastic review for the farm and your stay there. We do try to make the place and the expereince memorable, especially our Caretaker Penny, who works hard to ensure that visitors have the same welcoming relaxing time we do when we're down there.
You really got the essence of the place with your comment about the heart of a child!
Please come visit again soon!
