Chateau / Country House, 6 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 5.5 Baths, (Sleeps 16)
About Richard Smith
Our family has cherished this special farm since we bought in 1995. Since building the new house, we have shared it with numerous friends and families who come out to regroup, renew, and get inspired by the natural beauty of the place.
Richard Smith purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1995
Why Richard Smith chose Madison
Most beautiful place we had ever seen in Virginia. We had been camping, hiking, climbing and biking in this area for years, and fell more in love with it every time we visited. We bought it to create a place for families to bond. Great place for family reunions and get-togethers.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
The area is uniquely rich in character. The edge of the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge is flush with beautiful organic farms, wineries, and incredible cycling and hiking. Great base to visit Charlottsville and Monticello (35 miles), Luray (30 miles), Skyline Drive (18 miles), Sperryville (12 miles), Little Washington (15 miles), Flint Hill (17 miles),Orange (15 miles) and to take advantage of countless small antique shops and artist galleries that are close by.

2019 Family Vacation
Home and property it sits on is absolutely gorgeous. My family made it a point to visit the horses daily!
We enjoyed playing shuffle board, Foose ball, corn hole, and ping pong! The firepit by the pond was amazing and we made a few big fires during our stay. S'mores overload!
We didn't utilize the tree house as there were a few too many stink bugs for my liking...we did look inside and if you don't mind the bugs, I think it would be great fun!
The area is great for hiking and wine tasting at the many winerys in the area. We came home with quite a few bottles of local wines! Luray Caverns was also a big hit!
Fantastic vacation with the family!!!
The Lodge Exceeded Our Expectations
All prior reviews were spot on. The Lodge is a remarkable property, and the photos in the listing don’t quite do it justice. While the listing is impressive, the experience is even more so.
First, The property manager, Penny, was so welcoming. She maintains the place beautifully and is a valuable resource for first-timers like us in terms of what’s in the area and sundry details related to staying at the property. She also likes on the farm in a nearby cabin, so she’s easily available if needed while still affording guests ample privacy and tranquility.
The kitchen and all baths are pristine and resort quality. If your plan is to dine in, you’re well situated. Double ovens, dual dishwashers, two drip coffee makers, large side-by-side refrigerator, wine fridge, ice maker and everything you would need for meal prep and clean up - this place has it all, including a large grill outside.
Three of the five bedrooms have en suite baths, a fourth bedroom has an entrance from the room to a hall bath. A fifth bedroom features three beds along with a washer and dryer and also doubles as a craft room for kids.
The treehouse is more impressive than you would think. While it can sleep six, the single bathroom is tight so six people in the treehouse might be pushing it,
But kids will love it and enjoy the “independence” from the adults staying at the big house. The tree house, like the main house, is fully equipped with a small range, mini-fridge and cups, dish ware and utensils. You’ll be handwashing dishes, but hey, it’s the country.
The rest of the Lodge is amazing. Plenty is space if you want time by yourself. The views in every direction are stunning, the stone fireplaces impress, and the architectural details make clear this is a one-of-a-kind getaway.
The property is beautiful, and perfect for the outdoorsy types. Plenty of walking and hiking paths. Definitely be back on the deck for cocktails and the sunset. That is the perfect way to truly appreciate this unique environment. When the sun is down, you’ll briefly hear a few cows mooing. Then, if you’re as lucky as we were during our stay at the end of September 2019, you’ll hear the unmistakable and enthralling hoof beats of the horses running around the property. It’s like something from a movie; I’ve never experienced that before. It was beautiful and melodic.
In short, this is the perfect vacation spot for families or large groups. Don’t miss it.
We had a weekend family celebration at Chesnut Oak Farm!! The set up was perfect for a large family get away with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. The setting is gorgeous and the sunsets from the deck were amazing. We saw quite a few deer!! We made large meals (for 12) and found everything we needed readily available in the kitchen. We would like to make this an annual event!
fantastic house with spectacular views
Wonderful as ever
Our family is so appreciative of the Farm and the peaceful quiet we count on finding there.
Amazing lodge home in a beautiful, remote setting - perfect for large groups looking to get away
Our extended family of 16, ranging from ages 9 to 83, spent a week at the horse farm in early August 2019. It's a beautiful and spacious property, and the furnishings are of higher quality than your typical vacation rental. We received a lot of helpful information about the property and suggestions for nearby activities from Richard, the owner, as well as from Penny, the property manager who resides on the property. She greeted us by phone on the day of our arrival and stopped by the lodge twice during our stay to check on the hot tub.
As stated in the property description and in other reviews, the property is located in a pretty remote area; there really isn't any cell service, and internet access is pretty slow. We enjoyed activities on the property, such as fishing in the ponds, feeding the horses, playing corn hole, and relaxing in the hot tub, and also took day trips to Charlottesville, Luray Caverns, Shenandoah National Park, Massanutten Resort, and Culpepper. Sperryville, a tiny town located about 20 minutes away, has some nice restaurants.
Located only a short way from Old Rag Mountain, White Oak Canyon, and Skyline Drive in Blue Ridge Parkway, this location is perfect for those looking for a comfortable retreat surrounded by nature.
