Overview

About the property

House, 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath. Sleeps up to 6.

The Unicorn lodge is nestled among ancient oaks along side the pristine Savegre River in the cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota. Our area is famous for its dense concentration of the Resplendent Quetzal which is sought after by bird watchers from all over the world. We have had breakfast on our front deck with these magnificent creatures several times. There are several high end eco-resorts in our magical valley, but we have the only fully equipped homes in the area. We have an additional villa(Dreamwater Villa) on the property as well.

The lodge has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths, and an sleep 4-6 comfortably. The Savegre River is just off the front deck and was called 'the cleanest river in Central America' by National Geographic. We are located just 75 miles from the airport in San Jose or about a 2 hour drive

4 Days in a Beautiful Cloud Forest

  • 4 of 5

This was our first visit to Costa Rica together. We loved the cloud forest with its tranquil green mountains and magnificent bird experience. We would gladly advise a stay here for anyone seeking to experience Costa Rica. The cabin was filled with rustic charm. Everything you would need is provided for in the kitchen. There were bathrooms up and downstairs including a shower downstairs. there were broad windows giving panoramic views . The view of the river was lovely. The property manager was very helpful and friendly. The locals were warm and friendly and we found Miriam's Cafe uphill. We enjoyed the home made cooking everyday while amazed by the diversity of the colorful local birds. For the first time in our lives we saw Quetzales. For a Guatemalan like myself it was almost a mystical experience. if you are thinking about visiting Costa Rica do not hesitate to come here. It is beautiful and magical.

Lovely retreat

  • 5 of 5

We loved Ryan’s cabin and San Gerardo de Dota. The cabin’s location is unbeatable. We didn’t see any quetzals but did see a ton of other interesting birds from the deck, including emerald tucanets and flame tanagers. The cabin was really well equipped and we were comfortably warm sleeping wth the small heater. The cabin living area was pretty cold until we managed to get a fire going. My only suggestion is that it would be nice if some wood were placed inside the cabin to have a chance to be drying out before a visitor’s arrival. The wood was very wet and it was difficult to start a fire with it. All in all, the Unicorn Lodge is really special and we’d return in a heartbeat. If you go, don’t miss Miriam’s. Her trout casado was so good that we ate it two days in a row.

Peaceful place and great for birdwatching

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Unicorn and in the Gerardo de Dota area. There were many activities and good restaurants nearby. A caretaker lives next door who was available to help with any problems and to suggest good tour guides. The highlight was a fantastic tour with Melvin Fernandez, who not only found us quetzals but spotted and named almost 50 other birds. The stars were amazing at that elevation but be prepared for cold nights.

Beautiful Setting in a Rustic Cabin

  • 4 of 5

This lovely property is at around 7,600 feet, so expect cool weather. We would recommend a high-clearance, 4-wheel drive as the property is about 8 kilometers down a steep, fairly rough, gravel road in San Gerardo de Dota. The lodge is actually more of a fairly rustic cabin. The bath is nice with lots of hot water in the shower and in the lavatory. The kitchen is adequate with hot water in the large kitchen sink. The main heat source for the house is a fireplace. We had a big pile of wood provided including fire starter. There are two very small space heaters, but the house is a bit breezy and well-shaded so expect cool temperatures day and night. Even though the main bedroom is downstairs, we elected to sleep in the loft since it had a more open feel. The kitchen was adequate with cooking tools. Although it was adequately clean, the house and everything in the house could use a good, thorough, deep cleaning. We were without running water for a day because the tank had run dry. We were supplied with adequate drinking water, but, alas, no showers. There are not a lot of supplies in San Gerardo de Dota, so you will want to completely stock up before you arrive. Bring everything you will need. If you are coming from San Jose, there are many fruit/vegetable stands along the road. A good place for other supplies is at the Wal-Mart in Cartago along the highway. There are several nice restaurants within easy driving distance and a couple within easy walking distance. Ryan, the owner, is a friendly guy, but don't expect a lot of communication before you arrive. It was confusing trying to figure out how to reach the place, but fairly obvious once we were in the area. We enjoyed our stay because of the beauty of the area, but got a bit tired of the house always being cold.

This is a paradise. We saw 3 male Quetzals right when driving into the property so birdwatchers will love it here. The property is vast and beautiful. Would stay here again.

We stayed in Dreamwater

Dreamwater is lovely property with water running underneath. It is modern and the bed is very comfortable. Lovely to have space and well positioned in San Gerarado del Dota.

Map

Located in the pristine cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota.....this area is often called the best kept secret in all of Costa Rica. One of the few places on the planet to view the Resplendent Quetzal, San Gerardo de Dota is truly a must see on your visit to this amazing country.

San Gerardo de Dota is located off Highway 2, about 2-3 hours from San Jose and 2 hours from Dominical. Like everywhere in Costa Rica, signage is not the best; however, there is a small sign at the turnoff. It helps to keep a lookout for kilometer markers. San Gerardo de Dota is located at kilometer 80.

Once you turn off Highway 2, you’ll descend into the valley for about 15 minutes, maneuvering down several steep switchbacks before arriving at the village. Just one main road runs through town so there’s little chance of getting lost.

Leave early in the day: Driving after dark on Highway 2 is not recommended. The road is windy and steep and visibility can be very limited when it rains or the cloud cover increases.
