Northwoods Fishing & Hunting Getaway on Porter Lake
This is a rustic cedar log cabin that is off-grid but has most of the amenities of home. Perfect to get away from it all. The view from the front window wall and deck is the beautiful expansive northwoods and overlooks a semi-private lake that is known for northern pike and walleye as well as other warm water species of fish. If needed, heat is provided by a freestanding propane fireplace. The open great room has vaulted ceilings to compliment the cedar log wall construction. Use of boat and motor, and a canoe, are part of the package. A modern dock provides boat moorage and a relaxing place to enjoy the clear water of Porter Lake or dark skies at night for star gazing. Additional fishing and water recreation is available at nearby Cable Lake, which offers a public boat landing.
In addition to fishing, a network of gravel & dirt roads provide access to miles of potential ORV use, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, fall color touring, and hunting. The area is known to be some of the best habitat for moose in Michigan. Bald eagles are commonly seen from the cabin deck and loons are known to nest on the lake. Waterfowl, whitetail deer, grouse, and black bear are native to the area and abundant.
Power is provided by solar panels with battery storage. A back-up generator restores batteries on cloudy days or when needed. The cabin is located approximately 20 miles north of Crystal Falls, then 9 miles west and south.
The stated rent is for up to 4 people. We allow a maximum of 6 people to stay at the cabin, and there is an additional charge per person for the 5th and 6th person. We had a great time at Porter Lake cabin. The cabin was very comfortable for our family of four and you can't beat the view. The lake is easily accessible from the cabin and great for swimming/wading for young kids. Having access to a boat was such a huge plus for us too. The road in is gravel and pretty rugged in places but doable in a small SUV. Can't wait to visit again!

Thank you, Nathan! We're anxious to have you back too!
Our family had a wonderful stay on Porter Lake! The cabin and lake were as described and we had a great time fishing, BBQing, and enjoying the views and cool nights! Jim and Julie were amazing hosts and made our stay comfortable and trouble free! Highly recommend the cabin for families!
Description of the rustic cottage was accurately covered. Remotely located in upper peninsula. Enjoyed the nightly camp fires in back yard. Fishing on Porter Lake excellent, caught enough fish to have a fish fry. Enjoyed being off the grid cell service spotty at best. Our party had a great time being together.
We loved our stay at this remote, peaceful property. The lake view is beautiful. Hosts are very nice and accommodating. This is our second time staying here and we already have reservations for next year.
Had a wonderful week at Julie and Jim’s cabin. This is a remote and private cabin which is exactly what we were looking for. We canoed the lake, fished and biked the roads around the cabin. Enjoyed listening to the loons every night.
Julie was excellent at communicating and everything was just as described.

Great cabin, very remote 10 miles from main road. Hunting and fishing not as good as we hoped but everyone in the group had a great time! Thanks to our hosts Jim and Julie for letting our dogs be part of our trip!
We rented this cabin to get away from the city life and spend time with our kiddos. This place was exactly as described. The kids loved fishing morning and evening from the boat, watching the eagles soar above, and be kids without technology. We enjoyed movie nights, game nights, and overall enjoyed the star gazing while having our evening campfire. And being able to bring our 11 year old lab to hang with us was superb!!!! Hosts were also great. Always responded and checked in to see if we needed anything else. Hope to rent this gem again next year
Just a wonderful cabin in a beautiful setting off the beaten path, smack dab in the middle of nature. Despite having less than perfect weather we were able to catch our fair share of Northern Pike, Walleye, and personal best Smallmouth Bass. Also we’re fortunate to see Eagles, real close to a beaver, and coyote (on the trip in) but sadly the Moose evaded us.
Trips to nearby Canyon and Bond falls are not to be missed as well as Horserace Rapids. Lastly we enjoyed a great BBQ dinner at the Curious Pig in Crystal Falls if you’re looking for a good meal out. Fun times and many thanks to Jim and Julie for being such great hosts!
We adored our time at Porter Lake and could not be more grateful to have been able to visit Jim and Julie’s wild oasis.
There were loons on the lake almost all of the time we were there, bald eagles flew overhead, and we only saw another boat once the whole week. We used the canoe and the jon boat every day. Even though we don’t fish, it was just nice to be out on lake. As avid kayakers, we rented one in town which Julie helped us find and it gave us even another way to explore the lake.
The cabin is perfect. The view was amazing. And our one-year old puppy was as happy as could be and so were we. It was peaceful, magic and fun.
Our family (2 adults 2 kids) spent 6 days at the cabin. The cabin is very comfortable, clean and spacious (it's better than in the pictures). There is actually a very comfortable bedroom that is not shown in the pictures. The kitchen is very well stocked and the combination kitchen, dining area and living area were very convenient. Our kids had fun roasting hot dogs and mores on the fire pit provided. The stars at night were amazing! The lake is very clear, with sandy bottom and some rocks near the cabin. We saw deer, a family of bald eagles, a family of otters, frogs, birds and lots of crayfish. We had a blast exploring with our own kayaks and with the canoe and small motor boat provided with the rental. The owners, Julie and Jim, were very nice and helpful. Communication with them was excellent! Thanks for a wonderful stay!
What an amazing cabin in a perfect location! If you want to relax and be left alone this is the place. Cabin is very nice and super clean. Spent a lot of time out on the boat fishing and eagle hunting(pictures). Caught some walleye and northerns and got plenty of pics of the bald eagles that seem to be everywhere. Only saw 1 other boat the entire week we were there. Went out one morning on the boat to fish with just myself and the dog and it was dead silent with glass like water...beautiful! Our 2 yr old and dog had a blast going on bike rides and hikes. Spent nights by the campfire making s’mores and looking at the stars.
Cabin is pretty stocked with everything you could need, just make sure to bring groceries for the week. You’re definitely going to want to have at least an suv to get to the cabin as I t’s a solid 30 mins from the highway on an off-road trail to get there, which is why it’s so secluded. There is a small stream you need to cross right before you get to the cabin that’s about 12”-16” deep.
Owners Jim and Julie are super nice people, we’re so happy they are willing to share their little piece of heaven with the rest of us. I’m hoping we can make it back when our daughter, that’s due in Feb, is a couple years old.
We had the best time! The place is just gorgeous and peaceful. If you are looking for a secluded, beautiful place and semi- off the grid ( phones had no service, no wi-fi, etc ) but still have the luxury of being able to shower, have a refrigerator and electricity this is the spot for you. We were even able to take our dogs. 10/10 in my book.
Outstanding location, very remote and rustic. Like staying in one of those fishing lodges from the past (except you have all the modern conveniences and comforts). Fishing was good! Plan ahead and bring what you need, it’s not an easy trip back to the store. Would definitely rent again.
All in all we had a great stay. Fishing was a little slow but we did catch some quality fish. There were a couple of minor things that could have improved our stay. We planned a nice steak dinner for our first night there. Put the steaks on the grill and ran out of L.P. a few minutes later. There was supposed to be a spare tank but there was not. Pan frying big thick steaks did not turn out so well. We were told to double bag the garbage and put it in the basement. It got pretty stinky by the end of the week. Maybe some bins or cans with a lid would help keep the leakage and smell down.
We enjoyed the week of solitude, relaxation, fishing, wildlife viewing, canoeing, and beautiful fall color. Jim and Julie took good care of us from guiding us to the cabin, explaining how everything worked, setting up the boat, and offering any assistance all throughout our stay. This is a great place to get unplugged and enjoy time with family.
