About fiona

Owner of organic food store and cafeteria in San Jose. Love the outdoors.

fiona purchased this cabin in 1993

Why fiona chose Cabuya

Cabuya is a great place to wind down and get to know the local way of life. Much less busy than nearby Montezuma and Mal pais, yet with easy access to the beaches and rivers in the area.

What makes this cabin unique

The highlights, morning walk along the beach, you can walk for miles without meeting anyone, watching the birds fishing. Moonrise over the ocean, the early evening sky reflecting the sunset. Great places to eat, Bakery Cafe, Pizza at Cafe coyote.Fresh fish from the neighbour.

Seculed Beach Front Cabin in Jungle Setting

  • 5 of 5

What a piece of paradise. We loved staying here. We were greeted by the wonderful Jenny who showed us around, recommended places to go and was just so gracious and informative. The place has a great patio to relax in the hammock or on the swing. There is a wonderful shutter to open in the front that brings in the beautiful scenery and makes it very accessible from the kitchen to the table outside. There is a small kitchen, full size fridge and stove top so we were able to cook some of our meals. There is a wonderful outside bathroom with toilet and shower (in addition to inside bathroom) to use to cool off. The beach is just a few steps from your front porch. The wildlife was fabulous from the Capuchin monkeys hopping from tree to tree to being woken up the last morning we were there by the Howler monkeys. The windows upstairs open up completely to the outside and make a wonderful viewing of the Howlers right outside the window. We also had companion dogs, owned by the caretaker, friendly and very disciplined. While you are there, you need to check out the Coyote restaurant which is very close. Try the margaritas, yum yum! Also a wonderful menu. You can also check out the Pirate Restaurant which is even closer. We had a wonderful breakfast of fresh fruit while looking out at their pool and the beach beyond. We also had a great jungle hike at the point called Cabo Blanco. There were monkeys, Coati (not sure the spelling), lizards, iguanas and a wonderful hike to a beautiful beach. The hike is somewhat long and lots of hills but well worth it. Good Jungle Hike/Experience!!! We highly recommend this for your next visit to Costa Rica.

Pura Vida Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly amazing property in a location that allows you to experience the real Costa Rica.

First of all, the property is gorgeous; jungle and beach all in one. Look up and you'll see the capuchin monkeys swinging through the trees, a multitude of birds, and incredible greenery. At the same time, the beach is at your back door.

Our family of 4 (daughters ages 12 and 14 spent hardly any time with their phones, although there is wifi) spent a week here in December.

The sleeping space is upstairs with 3 beds in an open area, with a separate bedroom for the grown ups. I will never forget laying in bed and watching the sun come up over the ocean...yes you can do this-or roll over and gaze out into the jungle.

It's easy to cook here, there is a stove top and full sized fridge so you don't have to eat out every night. But, there are some great restaurants in the area too.

Cafe Coyote, 5 minutes down the road in Cabuya is amazing. Lots of choices...fresh fish and really good pizza were our faves. Jenny, the owner, can help you arrange any kind of activity and gives great advice and tips; she truly is a great friend to anyone visiting-and is very patient with anyone who wants to try out their Spanish.

Cafe Nimbu is another great restaurant. Fish cakes are a must try.

Any supplies you need can be found just down the road. Tons to do nearby. Safe beach. Need I say more.

Loved it. Not a party town, ideal for families or anyone who wants to connect with nature and get to know some of the unspoiled places and fantastic people in Costa Rica.

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

Let me first start off by saying that if you've never taken a beach vacation or prefer the hustle and bustle this may not be the location for you. I'll admit that it took me a few days to acclimate to how secluded we were at this rental. The 10 min. walk to Cabuya brings you to two restaurants and then another short walk gives you another restaurant, panadera, souvenir shop. The bus ride takes you to Montezuma, which is another small beach town but with more going on there.

With that said, the property itself is beautiful. The beach house makes you truly feel like you're part of the Robinson family. I loved the open-air concept of the dining and living room area. The short walk to the beach gives you your own private little area to sit and hang out. Be forewarned, there's a lot of hermit crabs! More than I've ever seen in my life! My husband and 5 year old daughter loved taking the kayak out into the calm waters. My husband also loved taking the bike and going around the area. The hammock was my favorite spot to hang out with my 3 year old. Melissa, the caretaker, is super nice and leaves you be to enjoy the surroundings. Her two dogs and cat became part of the family. The kids loved playing with Lucky and Blackie. Having them there actually made me feel less lonely. They were always by our sides. We enjoyed cooking dinner at the house but we spent our lunches at Hotel Celaje about a 5 min. walk from the house. They served a variety of delicious food AND allowed you access to their pool with your food purchase. Our kids were happy campers. Overall, I thought the house and area was beautiful. My husband ended up loving it so much he was open to the idea of returning if we ever found our way back here.

Excellent family get away

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here during March break for 7 days. Our daughters were 15 and 13 at the time and loved the experience. If you're looking for something different than all-inclusive, a bit of an adventure and want to see the real Costa Rica this is the place. Private and quiet but minutes from everything you may need. The house was just as described and clean when we arrived. Melissa (housekeeper) and her daughter were just finishing cleaning the house when we arrived. Fiona (Owner) called us at that time as well to see that we had arrived and everything was Ok. There were bikes for us to use during the week, and kayaks. The property is nicely landscaped and well taken care of without being overly manicured. The beach is rocky but with shoes is still nice to walk and beachcomb. At high tide the water is shallow for wading and again with water shoes it is no problem to walk out.

The home is simple but beautiful with lots of wood and tile and wide open windows for air flow. Every morning I watched the sunrise from our bed through the window. What a glorious way to awake. We expected to be awoken by Howler monkeys every morning but the fruit on the trees around us were not ripe. They visited the property once in the afternoon and hung out for a while. On our second last day they awoke us with their loud calls. Very cool but creepy at the same time. We found where they were hanging out and could visit them when we wished. We saw the iguanas a few times, and some beautiful birds. At night we loved to sit out in the outdoor living area and just chill. The hammock was the favorite.

There is a full bath upstairs and all so a well appointed "outhouse" outside with flush toilet, sink and shower.

There is everything you need to cook your own meals but we chose to eat out every night and check out the great restaurants in town and in Montezuma.

We all fell in love with the dogs Blackie, Looky and Poppy the cat. They were Melissa's pets who adopted and "protected" us during our stay.

If you're looking for a simple but comfortable place to get away from it all, look no further. Cabuya is filled with friendly people. Fiona was wonderful to work with and she made sure our stay was great. Questions sent to her by email were quickly answered.

Our only complaint was we had to leave too soon. We were just catching the Pura Vida

vacation bliss on the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

After much searching and multiple comparisons, our family chose Las Caracolas as our vacation "base camp." Upon our arrival, we were graciously welcomed by Melissa (caretaker) and the dogs Blackie and Lucky. The property was neat and meticulously clean. The house itself is nicely laid out with excellent air flow to keep us cool. My favorite aspect of the house was the pass-through bar from the kitchen to the beautiful outdoor table. The house is made of teak branches, which captured my imagination. The home was very comfortable for our family of four (with children ages 10 and 8). The kitchen was nicely equipped with everything I needed to cook meals. Every evening finished with a relaxing shower and restful sleep in the comfortable beds. We made good use of the bicycles and sea kayaks provided by the owners.

The property also includes a secluded beach with hamoks for relaxing and tables for enjoying a meal at the waterfront. We spent many mornings mesmerized by sunrises over the water, and watching the fishermen go out on their daily rounds.

While staying on the property would have been enough, Las Caracolas is within close walking distance to several wonderful restaurants (our personal favorite was Cafe Coyote), a fabulous bakery, tour guides (check out Solo Bueno Tours), and beautiful natural scenery (check out cemetery island, and Cabo Blanco National Preserve) as well as countless secluded beaches an waterfalls. Biodiversity is unparalleled. The property is also close to two small markets which had everything I needed.

Another attraction is the pacific beaches (among the most pristine beautiful in the world) just a short drive away. Montezuma is close and a nice small town with bank machines, a larger market and lots of tourist attractions.

Although we read many great reviews of the property with great anticipation, our expectations were pleasantly exceeded by the beautiful home and the gracious hospitality offered by Melissa. She addressed all if our questions and made sure all of our needs were met. I speak as much Spanish as 2 years of high school Spanish would allow, and wad able to communicate effectively with Melissa, and find what we neded around town. The dogs adopted us and kept a vigilant eye on us while we were there.

I would highly recommend Las Caracolas for your Costa Rica get-away. I can tell you we will return to Costa Rica, and Las Caracolas will be part of our plans. Cabuya is a wonderful community.
