What makes this lodge unique

It is our goal to make your getaway easier on you. We provide all of your bed and bath linens, a shower mounted dispenser with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. A mounted hair dryer for your convenience. There is enough for you to remember when packing for a vacation, so at Linhaven we provide conveniences that make your stay more comfortable. The kitchen is stocked with unlimited coffee and tea, sugar, creamer, splenda. We also keep the most popular condiments stocked such as mustard, mayo, relish, ketchup, syrup, cooking oil, Italian dressing, ranch dressing, cooking spray, and numerous spices. All appropriate condiments are supplied in squeezable bottles for sanitary use. We provide all of your paper towels, toilet paper and trash bags as well. Even the tea light candles for the porch chandelier are stocked for your use.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am grateful for the comments, and in fact she is absolutely correct about the toilet system. I am so happy to report that as of March 30th, the initial

"environmentally friendly" toilet system we had in place has been replaced. The only thing I disagree with is the distance to travel for groceries, as it is 6 miles into the town of Dushore where there are two grocery stores, as well as a 24 hour mini mart to accommodate your needs.

Beautiful, secluded, homey cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (2 adults, 17 yr old & 21 yr old kids) was looking for a "get-away" vacation. I was thrilled to find such an amazing cabin at such a great price in the area of PA that we were interested in visiting. The pictures on the website showed an amazing place, but when we arrived, we were more than happy with Linhaven Lodge. The decorations made the cabin extremely homey and very comfortable. The website indicated that the cabin was well "stocked", but again, we were surprised at all of the amenities that were supplied -- shampoo/conditioner, dish soap, condiments, towels/washcloths, linens, paper products, a large variety of DVDs, a bike, all kitchen appliances, dishes, utensils, cleaning supplies, and more. It literally felt like home-away-from home.

Someone complained about having to go to Cindy's house to get the keys to the Lodge. Her home is not that far from the Lodge and I think for safety reasons and for her peace of mind, this is not too much to ask. The Lodge is located in a very peaceful and secluded area. While we were staying at Linhaven, we saw three vehicles in the five days. One of those was a Penn Electric truck because our electric had gone off; one was a township truck and there was a random vehicle one evening. If you are looking for an amazingly peaceful, get-away from everything, vacation -- this is the one for you! You can not go wrong with this cabin if you want to leave the hustle and bustle of life at home and relax.

My favorite part of the Lodge was the porch. I would get up before my family in the morning and go there to drink my coffee and read. The sound of the birds and the breeze in the trees was so relaxing. In the evening, when my husband wanted to watch TV, I would retreat there again for peace and quiet to read. My second favorite place was the fire ring. This presented an amazing chance for the four of us to sit around and enjoy each other's company.

If I had any complaints, it would be about the mattress on the bed in the master bedroom. I ended up sleeping in the loft with my kids. The beds up there were much more comfortable. My husband remained in the master bedroom and was comfortable with just himself. It was just not very comfortable for the two of us.

The price was great! The customer service was fabulous! The cottage was PERFECT! Thank you for an unforgettable vacation! Highly recommended!

Nice Cabin, Uncertain Arrival

  • 3 of 5

First off, the cabin is very nice. It's a small lot, but the cabin itself is very well-constructed and cared for. All of the amenities work properly (although we did not need AC). There were plenty of towels, the kitchen was well stocked, and the cabin was clean and neat upon arrival.

We booked months in advance and were told we had to drive an extra 7-10 miles to Dushore to pick up the key. I explained when we booked that we were already driving 200 miles with 3 young kids, and did not want to do this, so the owner agreed to meet us at the property instead. Then, months later, a day or two before the trip, the owner told me again we had to drive to Dushore to get the key, adding 15-20 extra miles round trip. Or else we could have our money back and not take a trip we had planned for months. When you drive 200 miles with anyone, let alone 3 young kids, the last think you need at that point is another half hour in the car to hunt down a key. We understand from other reviews this is so the owner, "Can have a look at you." This implies if the owner does not like the looks of you, then you may be told to turn around and go home. So while in transit, we got hung up in traffic and realized we would be an hour or more late. The owner then relented and agreed to leave the key on the property for us. Which makes no sense, because if you are concerned about whether or not your guests are trustworthy enough to have access to the cabin, then that should not change just because they're arriving an hour later. We found the key where it was promised, so there was ultimately no problem, except the extra stress. That said, if you are thinking of renting this cabin, and you live north or north west of Dushore, then you actually do need to pass through the town in order to reach the cabin. If you make it there, you will like it.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that Mr Bernardo felt the necessity to embellish his story for dramatic effect, however it does substantiate the reason why I offered to override my own policy regarding refunds, as that it is certainly true that I provided that option. Firstly, the lodge is on a 1/2 acre lot that borders 7,906 acres of state game land, I am not certain how much space he thought 100.00/night would buy. 10 months ago, a tentative plan to meet at the lodge for the key was made, but as any reasonable adult would expect, that is impossible to guarantee, especially when he was informed upfront that I had an additional property to attend to, as well as a full time job. You MUST go through Dushore to get to the cabin, unless you wish to take ONE other road, partially paved, partially dirt and stone which winds through the woods of the state game lands. So it is unclear why when I offered to come from cleaning the second property, and meet him in Dushore, he still considered this inconvenient. Never mind, that the expectations of Mr Bernardo was for me to meet him at his arrival, first at 4, then an hour before 4 changed to "5 or 6". This is precisely why I do not stand idle awaiting arrivals. Dushore is 3.5 miles from my house, it is 9.5 miles from my driveway to the lodge driveway. However, it is clear that dramatizing information is the goal, as Mr Bernardo emailed me he was driving an implied torturous 160 miles, but for the purposes of his review it climbed to 200. The most offensive, is his implying that I would turn away guests based on what I see when I meet them. As a father of 3, I certainly hope that he becomes more aware of the possibility that in the future his kids may be joining a group of their friends for a wild weekend of underage drinking at a reasonably priced cabin, and be grateful to the owners that don't allow it to happen. Perhaps he will be willing to handover the keys to his own home. The only part of my rental experience with Mr Bernardo that I am apologetic for, is "relenting" and leaving the key to make his bantering stop. I certainly hope that my fellow landlords in Sullivan county will take heed and realize there isn't a red carpet long enough to satisfy this customer.

Location and comfort

  • 4 of 5

Linhaven Lodge is a very cozy retreat in an ideal location if your goal is to visit both World's End and Rickett's Glen State Parks. It's an easy drive to both from this spot, and your stay here will be made easier in general by all the little essentials that the Dalys provide. As some reviews have mentioned, the lodge is not exactly secluded, as there is another camp within view and earshot of the property. We didn't find this much of an issue because whoever was staying at the other camp was not even remotely rowdy, just a grandfather, son, and grandson trio. Also, yes, you do need to pick up the key from the owners, as they're not comfortable giving the key to people they haven't laid eyes on, which doesn't seem unreasonable, since they live within 10 miles of the lodge. Besides, not going there would mean missing out on Cindy's passel of boisterous pugs, who are adorable. Do not let any mention of an iffy toilet from previous reviews alarm you. The old toilet has been replaced, and the new one worked perfectly well for us. Otherwise, our experience was similar to other reviews: this is a clean, well-stocked property that the owners have taken a lot of care with. If any issues arise, Cindy is very responsive. You will love the front porch, and I half wished I was a kid again while there because I could definitely see kids loving sleeping in the loft space. Do note that if you want to use the fire ring, wood is not supplied, but there are plenty of places that sell fire wood, including a place not too far from where you will be picking up the key. A lot is provided on this property, but there are a few stores in Dushore where you're likely to be able to find the basics, if needed. There is a ton of great hiking in the area. The biggest challenge is choosing where to go.

Wonderful cabin

  • 4 of 5

Our family stayed over Memorial Day and had a great time. The house was lovely- lots of games provided and it was cozy with the fireplace and fire pit. I would easily give 5 stars except for 2 things. 1. Picking up the keys is about 15-20 minutes away. For us, coming from the south and having to do that round trip, that added about 45 min to our trip. Our kids were cranky by then and it was tough. If you are coming from a different direction, you might drive right by it. 2. We thought we could fish the lake down the road so we brought kayaks. It is posted as private so we needed to look elsewhere.

Both of those issues were not deal breakers. We loved the house and will plan accordingly next time. We are looking forward to returning! Our kids (ages 5, 8) had a great time as well and were sad to leave. Thank you :)

Owner's Response: I do customarily have first time renters check in at my primary home. It is exactly 9.5 miles from driveway to driveway. Additionally, it adds a level of comfort when you hand the keys to your home over to someone you have never met. For security purposes, I don't allow the location to be know to perfect strangers. Unfortunately this is a downfall when renting a private home as opposed to staying at a hotel with 24 hour staff. I was not asked about the lake, otherwise I would have informed renters that the side of the lake closest to the lodge falls on state game land 66, and is permissible to enter the water from that side, as well as fish. As well, Ricketts Glen has lake Jean which encompasses 700 acres of water. Directions to Ricketts Glen from the lodge are provided at check in.
