UPSTAIRS

The kitchen comes fully stocked with dishes, utensils, etc… This Cook's kitchen features a 4 burner stove, refrigerator/freezer (w/ ice maker), microwave, coffee maker, dishwasher, two sinks and a disposal. Broadband wifi is available free of charge. The main living area features a large sectional sofa, love seat, large chairs, as well as plenty of additional seating. DOWNSTAIRS

Beds, beds, beds... and spaces for playing games or just getting away from the crowd. Just out the door, is a covered carport with comfortable seating to catch the gulf breezes. Facing the water, you can enjoy the New Orleans style porch with seating for 11 people (table and chairs, rocker, swing). From this porch you can watch the mullet jump or if you keep a close watch you can spot the dolphins stroll through the Bay.

The pier is a great spot to watch the sun rise and set, sit and enjoy the views and breezes, fish, crab, swim, toss a cast net, get a tan.

LAFITTE BAY

House sits on the deep water Lafitte Bay, which is the largest inlet bay on the north side of Dauphin Island. It's hard to determine what is prettier, the sun rising in the east or the moon hanging over the Bay. At this house, you can see both. Step out the front door and watch a gorgeous sunset to the west in the evening. This house has a water view from all four sides.

About Jan Tanner

I'm a teacher, mom, grandmother and project extraordinaire. I'm passionate about getting my hands dirty - whether it's gardening or remodeling a home.

I love my porches; being outside in the warm breezes rejuvenates and calms my soul. Napping in the hammock, chasing my grandchildren, sunning and reading magazines on the chaise lounge chairs, eating watermelon or lavish dinners of fresh trout with a bottle of wine -- it doesn't matter what you are doing, being outside heightens the experience!

Jan Tanner purchased this house in 1998

Why Jan Tanner chose Dauphin Island

I dreamed of owning a beach home on Dauphin Island and we finally made that happen by doing most of the work ourselves on a previous beach cottage. Then, we made the commitment to live on Dauphin Island full time and purchased this property.

This was our home for many years but after Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, we decided to have a second home in Mobile, AL and rent out our home. It's still a place we all love.

Beyond Reason is appropriately named ... It is unique in so many ways. I fell in love the first time I walked through the door of this awkward brick house on the water. It has so much charm and it wraps you up . All are surprised by this home's beautiful qualities when they enter. It has an unexplained warmth and beauty that is unexpected. It is Beyond Reason!

What makes this house unique

Not another condo or silly bright bedspread ...instead...

200 year old heart pine floors, slave made bricks, stately arched brick columns, antique Egyptian tiles, panoramic water views, antique furniture that is relaxed and user friendly, large open kitchen furnished with all needed for gracious cooking, old time large screened porch -- Beyond Reason is comfortable and beautiful. The open plan is modern and updated, but gives you a feeling of 'back in time'. The cottage garden has wildflowers and trees that are filled with birds and butterflies. Mature oaks and numerous palm trees surround our home. It is located on the largest deep water bay on Dauphin Island's West End. Dolphins stroll through to catch the mullet as blue crabs roam the bay floor . Choose a porch from the many surrounding our home; New Orleans style porch with brick arches on waterside, large screened porch upstairs overlooking Lafitte Bay, covered area on ground level furnished for relaxation, sit in the gardens around the house or on the front stoop. The spacious open living area is comfortable for large crowds, and the nooks throughout the house are great get away spaces for small groups. The abundant comfortable bedding allows for large groups to vacation together. The location provides deep water swimming 15 feet from the back door; the walk to the gulf beach is an easy 3-5 minute stroll. The large screened porch provides seating for 16 with a play space for kids. It is a great escape from evening bugs and has views of the bay and gulf with an outdoor cooking station. The charm of this home is hard to describe. 'When guests walk through the door they always give a sigh of unexpected delight. Our guestbook is a joy to read as our visitors comment on the amazing attributes of this iconic island home. We are attached to our family home and take great care to insure that our guests feel the same connection. You will not want to leave. Many return because there is no place that compares.

House was nice

  • 3 of 5

Overall the house was really nice inside. Needed some work outside but the island was perfect! Quiet and not crowded. However, we did clean the property VERY well and never received the deposit back. I emailed the owner and she never responded. We have never been on a vacation and not gotten the cleaning deposit back so for this reason we would not stay again. Very cute house to stay in but don't expect deposit back when staying.

Best Family Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Where do I start? Perfect family friendly home on Dauphin. Everything we needed to relax and enjoy family time before school is back in session. Caught many fish off the dock and blue crab in the cages. The space was cool and comfortable when we needed a break from the midday sun. Thanks for everything! The Siedschlags

Birthday Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The home was everything we expected it to be and more we stayed for a week and in that week was mine,my son and my dads birthday and I have to say it gave us the best birthday we have ever had.My son is now talking about moving to the area he loved it so much so me and my husband are going to gift them a honeymoon in the house for their wedding gift. You can not call this place a house because a house is just a house this is a Home one filled with memories and collections of the owners with extra personal touches you can feel the love and heart of the home as well as the good feeling of all the blessed memories there. The home has loads of room we found that we didnt even need 4 of the beds nor the kids cubby. I reccomend this home to any family that wants to go there and feel like they are home. Thank you for such a loving home

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at Beyond Reason as a treat to celebrate my parent's 50th Wedding Anniversary. We have a large family with diverse interests and ages and every single need and desire is met by staying at this home. We all loved fishing each morning and evening off the dock. The dining area and the nook off the dining area is the perfect place to cozy up to a coffee and watch the dolphins come into the bay each morning. The kitchen was great for a large family lots of room for people to do their thing throughout...every inch is immaculate and beautiful. If you want a truly gorgeous beach home with a little more privacy than right on the beach this is perfect. Beautiful part about the beach? Just a quick sprint across the street and over the dunes and we were there. It was wonderful. I can't quite get it all in how perfect it is. Our dogs were happy, the kids were safe, the adults could play and have fun, the foodies got fed...it rocked.

Great Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two dachshunds and I stayed at Jan and Randy Tanner's home for five weeks over the holidays. I am originally from Mobile and therefore quite familiar with Dauphin Island. This home is spacious, comfortable, and in a great location. My husband and I worked remotely from the house the first 3 weeks of our stay and had one minor hiccup with the connection which was quickly resolved by the service provider technician with assistance from the home owners. Otherwise, no problems. Our 'office' view was beautiful looking out over the bay with wonderful sunrise and sunsets after a morning jog along Bienville Blvd. The kitchen is well equipped and we loved cooking for everyone. We had plenty of visitors between local family and friends and always plenty of space for those that stayed. Two words: Great Home. We thoroughly enjoyed our special time here and will treasure the memories.

Owner's Response: So glad that families have great memories in our home. I think Eric caught bigger Red fish than we did from the pier. The birds and butterflies like my messy yard more than the humans!!
