The mysterious sightings around Roswell have attracted UFO fanatics for decades and many of the small town's museums are based around alien life. Cool off in the tranquil cenotes
To escape the UFO obsession in town, you can drive 14 miles or so down to the Bottomless Lakes State Park. Located deep in the desert, you can walk around the series of azure cenotes carved out by the river. If you bring a picnic, you can settle down in a shady spot and take refreshing dips in the cool water or cast your line in to hook in a fish. For something a little more adrenaline-inducing, you can drive down to the 600-acre Mescalero Sands North Dune and hop onto motorcycles or ATVs to race through the sand.
Spot roadrunners and dragonflies
Just a few miles away from your Roswell vacation rental is the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a wetland habitat which teems with wildlife. To give an indication as to the astonishing number of creatures, there are more than 75 recorded species of dragonfly alone. As you cross the sandy dunes and grasslands, you'll likely spot the odd roadrunner or two, migrating sandhill cranes and shy horned lizards basking in the hot desert sunshine.
