Country home 5 bdrs, 6 baths, yoga/art studio, large garden near wineries +beach
The Gryphon, a Regency Cottage, is a completely restored historic home nestled into a large garden and natural wildlife preserve. The Gryphon is the only accommodation in Prince Edward County with five bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms. There are two full kitchens, three porches, a fire pit and a large garden with a stone seating area and a yoga or art studio. Outdoor dining is on a large wooden porch that surrounds two sides of the house. Due to the frequent misuse of the BBQ, and the subsequent repairs due to fire etc., there is no longer a BBQ on site.
There are places for gathering with friends and family, and places to escape and read a book. A video room with super high speed internet and a 12 foot screen keeps kids entertained. You will need to hook up your device to the video unit.
Weekly and monthly discounts available. Each window looks out over a field of wildflowers, a formal garden, a rural farmland, or Lake Consecon. Twelve foot ceilings and antique furniture add to the feeling of old time charm. The porch off the kitchen has a bbq and three tables for eating, cooking and relaxing. The Millennium Trail just up the road is perfect for walking and cycling. North Beach and Sandbanks provincial park are just down the road. Prince Edward County is a mecca for artists, nature lovers and anyone looking for a getaway … for a weekend break or for life. Renowned for its sailing, fishing and giant sand dunes, The County also offers live theatre, artists studios and galleries, unique regional cuisine and a flourishing wine region. We had the most spectacular weekend in this charming home. The property is just stunning, and Shannon the host was over the top accomodating! Would go back in a heartbeat!
The house is amazing, very spacious and suitable for large groups (5 bedrooms!). Location is great, 10 minutes away from North Beach which is a nice provincial park. We also biked in the area and it's lovely, roads are quiet with very little trafic. I would return anytime!

Great family weekend in a fascinating historic cottage
Plenty of space and amenities for a pleasant stay with family or friends. Check out the restoration story before you come, to fully appreciate all the architectural features.
Once a year get together held at this property. Great house with such a nice feel of older times. Fully functional and great place to use as a base for Prince Edward county and beyond.

William your group was absolutely stellar. Everything was perfect. Thanks so much for leaving the house in good order. I hope to see you again next year..
The guests requested an early entry so I had the cleaners come in at 8:00 am to please them. There were 7 emails and texts all of which were answered immediately. Most of the information was in the guest book. Still a 4 star review. I guess there is no pleasing some people.
The Gryphon is a perfect location for a group wanting to explore Prince Edward County. The common areas were spacious and each of the 5 bedrooms had its own bathroom. It was a lovely old home and property.

Hi Karen, It was great to have you stay. Thanks for leaving the house in such good repair.
The house was a magnificent building, with lots of space. We loved the architectural features and its history - it grew on us more and more as we stayed. Check in worked well. Kitchen facilities were awkward for a full house of people - there was little or no cupboard space for provisions, and the dishwasher was not very efficient. It was however a very good place to celebrate our golden wedding with the family. Shannon was very helpful and it was lovely to meet her on our last day.
We loved the location and all the space inside and outside. All the rooms are well appointed with ensuite baths and or showers. The kids had a great time exploring and running around the property. They brought a badminton set and played on the lawn. At night we could watch movies or play games. My only comment is bring paper towels. We went to the local beaches 3 times and had a fantastic time there. Buy permits ahead.
Had a great stay at The Gryphon. This cottage has a fascinating history and is full of character. Thoroughly enjoyed exploring the space. Very relaxing environment. Would definitely come back. Host is wonderful to deal with.

Present pleasures in a past environment
We had a beautiful stay in this restored Regency cottage - quiet setting, interesting room, and a gracious host who told us all about the house and the area. An easy drive to good places to visit and to eat. Our rooms were spacious and clean and the bathroom was well equipped. We recommend you stay at the Gryphon whenever you visit the area.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay at the Gryphon Cottage in Consecon. The house is stunning and has a lot of space and ample washrooms! The kitchen was well equipped for our big group, which is a rarity. Shannon, the host, was very easy to communicate with and gave lots of great tips about wineries and restaurants in the area when we asked. I would really recommend this for a family / adult group getaway.

Hi Cassandra,
It was great to have your family stay over Thanksgiving. I'm glad the weather co-operated as well.

Loved everything about this historic home. We had 8 people staying for a Family Anniversary Celebration. This home fit the bill perfectly! Very large roomy home, quiet surroundings, equipped and furnished very comfortably, beautiful gardens with extensive birds and most important, all the beds were very comfortable! Highly recommend and would stay here again if we have another reunion!

HI Paul,
Your group were fabulous. You even figured out the garbage!! Many people have no concept of recycling.
I do apologize for the bbq. It was working in June and I had no reason to think there was a problem. You will note that 2 full tanks of propane were supplied for your visit. The bbq is only 2 years old and only used in the summer, so, again, I would not have expected it to be in bad shape. It has had a total renewal with many replaced parts. Thanks for pointing this problem out to me.
best Wishes,
Shannon
The property was beautiful and the host was very quick with communication. It was unfortunate that the yoga studio was not avaliable for use and the basement shower had no hot water. However, there was everything needed to make any meals you could think of.

Hi Leanne,
There was a delay on the yoga studio, it is available as of Thursday this week. My wonderful Eritrean worker had a construction injury but is fine now.
The shower in the downstairs bathroom is plumbed backwards, I will renew the note that I had in the room. The hot is cold, and the cold is hot... the next time there is a plumber in, I'll have it fixed. Thanks so much for coming,
Shannon
We rented the Gryphon in September for a group of 10. It was a beautiful location, and the house was fabulous. We absolutely loved it. Thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast on the large covered porch, and our evenings in the comfy living room. Kitchen was very well equipped. Extremely spacious, and beautiful architecture. Shannon was so easy to deal. We all loved the house, and had more than enough room.
Thank you Shannon!

Hi Carol,
It was a pleasure to have you. Please come again!
We had a great weekend stay at Gryphon cottage. There were five couples and this property worked perfectly for us since all the bedrooms had en-suite bedrooms. There was lots of space so we weren’t crowed and everyone had their own space. We also liked the outdoor space for playing bocce, mölkky and giant dice Yahtzee. It is a very quiet rural area but close to wineries, towns and other attractions in the area. The bbq needs an update but other than that there was an abundant supply of dishes and cooking utensils. The beds were comfortable, linens and towels were all supplied. The owner Shannon was easy to communicate with and responded quickly to any questions we had. I would stay here again if traveling to the area.

Hi Janine,
It was great to have you stay. The bar b que is in need of a new element, and this is being done this week. No one had used it in a while, so I didn't know. I had to look up mölkky. It looks really fun! I'll look forward to seeing you again.

The Gryphon is awesome...
My family and I had the perfect weekend away at The Gryphon. This place is an absolute gem, the pictures don't do it justice. We were close to all PEC has to offer but we're happy to just chill and enjoy the house and it's amazing grounds. The house itself has been restored beautifully. It's like a Victorian cottage in its prime but with Internet and a theatre with surround sound. There is a ton of room, the bedrooms are very comfortable, all with en suite bathrooms. The kitchen, living and dining rooms (complimented by some incredible art, including some by Shannon herself) are stunning rooms to enjoy while the sun sets and into the evening. We will definitely be back soon. Thanks Shannon for being such a great host!

Beautifull but in need of a lot of love
We have been in the rental business for 30 years.
Nice location. Quiet neighborhood. Spacious old home. Large rooms. Nice and comfy beds. Large kitchen. Lots of room to spread out.
Close to bike path. Owner furnishes pass to local state park.
Off putting to find that in this 4-5 star rated house the front door knob keeps falling out almost every time. The masterbedroom has a beautifull shower but the shower head is almost all plugged up. Very large, spacious kitchen with a dishwasher that almost falls out because it was fixed not to the side. A kitchen faucet that is hard to shut. Dishes needed to be rewashed because the glasses were very cloudy.
Large porch with lots of chair to choose because most of them are woobly because of loose screws. Do not open upstair windows because the hardware has been broken for a long time and they will be difficult to close. Needs a deep clean and uncluttering.

Dear Carolle,
Thank you for your feedback. The front door knob had never fallen off before. It has been fixed. Since the house has been rented almost every day since June 15, I have not had the pleasure of staying myself, thus I did not know about the shower head. There is a liquid that you need to put into the dishwasher to get the dishes sparkling clean. I refilled that last week and have put it on my list of things to check each week. Chairs etc. and the loose faucet are small fixes that I will care of this week.
Next summer I will book three or four days midsummer to deal with all the small problems that show up. This summer my time was spent largely in trying to save the plants and trees during the incredible drought. I have scheduled in an irrigation system for next spring so that I will have more time to attend to the house interior. You are absolutely correct in saying that these small things are certainly necessary.

Very disappointing
The property does not live up to the posted photos. We had been so looking forward to the historic property. There was good communication and an early check in given. But the house was in disrepair and unclean. It had not been cleaned properly for a long time. Stained linens, dirty kitchen sink and refrigerator. Stained and dirty furniture,
Dead flies all over the upstairs bedrooms, dust and poop on one toilet seat. Unusable bike, flat tires in a pile of junk under the deck. Torn and dirty deck chairs.
We did have a beautiful dahlia bouquet and the beds were made. But the problems persisted, the upstairs electricity did not work and we went to an unbelievable disorganized room under the house to flip the fuse and to get plastic bags for the kitchen garbage. There was not any laundry facilities as advertised. I have many photos of the house problems if VRBO would like them.
We did complain and the owner said she would refund the cleaning fee only if we agreed to give a good review. I think this is why there are such good reviews online.

I am sorry that Louise and her group did not enjoy their stay. Sometimes people don't realize that a country property is going to have flies, particularly if you leave the windows or doors open.
The electricity on the upper floor was turned off because of a ground fault problem. This has never happened before. I told the guests that I would get someone in to turn it on in a few hours, or they could turn it on themselves but that the storage and tool area was extremely messy due to an ongoing construction process and the end of season repairs. They said they didn't mind, and went in, turned the lights on, and took pictures... Obviously I should have had a neighbor do it. They said they couldn't find a clean table cloth. There was a stack of four table cloths, one had a two inch stain, the rest were fine. I spoke with my cleaners to see if there was any change in the cleaning protocol, they said no. They were extremely upset that their work was found sub standard after 15 weeks of five star reviews for cleaning. I was still going to send the refund because they were not happy, but then Louise started texted me at midnight. I then concluded that the problems were not really about the house.
beautiful period cottage. actually sleeps 10 in actual beds, ensuites in every bedroom (is that even a thing?). large, very well equipped, nicely furnished. friendly responsive host. maybe 10 minute drive from north beach, much further to sandbanks (imo, north beach is a nicer beach though, even if sandbanks is way way more famous). a gem for a quiet getaway.

Discount for September long weekend . Rent for two nights and get the third for free. Just book your two nights and tell me if you would like the one before or after, and it will be blocked off for you! Ontario is losing so many of our historic homes and properties. we will miss them when they are gone. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home. I rebuilt it in 2011. In 2023 I started rebuilding an 1830s small barn. This will be finished by Spring 2024 and can be used as a yoga studio, art class studio, crafts room or practice room.
Why they chose this property
In June there are dozens of turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the trees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The Millennium Trail is just down the road. YOu can walk or ride your bike along the trail all the way to Picton. In five minutes you can get to the beach, but you are well enough away to escape the crowds. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.
What makes this property unique
The house has the proportions of a different age. It is gracious and open. You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.
