By location, view, amenities and rental rate, this house is a stand-out from other local rentals.
My late parents bought this house next door to their Lake Michigan home in the 1970s for use by family and friends. This house was totally re-modeled and re-furnished to a high and comfortable level in 2011. Beautiful, new stairs to the beach (with seating areas with panoramic lake views) added in October, 2013 but washed away by the record high waters & storms of 2016. The beach remains accessible but its by path through the dune grass, or via a neighbor's stairs (which survived the storms) or via the nearby State Park's stairs.
The house is situated on a sand dune bluff far back from the road (Scenic Drive) on a multi-acre wooded lot. The view of Lake Michigan is spectacular in all seasons. Sunsets are particularly stunning. When the State of Michigan adopted a license plate with a setting sun years ago, they had this property's view in mind. See our reviews: this spot is a Lake Michigan gem.
The beach has been narrowed by our cottage by the high water but is wide and sandy on the State Park land which starts about a thousand or so feet south all the way to the Muskegon Channel. Even on the state land, the beach is secluded and visited only by occasional campers from the State Park. The surf is usually low, making the beach usable for windsurfing or a small catamaran or sailboat which could be safely left on the beach (but you would have to launch at the State Park or Duck Lake beach because the sand dune face is steep and off-limits to protect it from erosion.)
The interior is completely new and modern. Although lake breezes are virtually constant, the house has ceiling fans in every room to assure comfort.
It is a traffic-free drive of about 4 miles to ample shopping, including 'big box' stores, in North Muskegon, but the best lunch -- a Lake Michigan institution -- is 'Ruth Ann's' ice cream and sandwiches about 3 minutes walk down Scenic Drive.
Keywords: This is a beach house with all of the amenities of home. Internet access (cable modem) & 'Extended Network' Verizon cell service.
I live in Southern California (until I retire) and manage the property for our family. My brother, Pete, and his lovely wife, Cincy, are the local managers who meet vacation renters and assure that the house is spotless -- the way we would want it when we use it as family. We have had roots in North Muskegon since 1964 and welcome the opportunity to share our beautiful and relaxing area with visitors.
Mark Sullivan purchased this house in 1978
My parents owned the house next door and, when this house came on the market, they bought it to assure that we would always have the combined large and beautiful beach with one of the best views of Lake Michigan.
This is an awesome view point in the warm months and a short, short walk to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex and Luge in the snowy months.
We use the home next door (my late parents' home) as a vacation spot. It is not rented at present. Renters at our second home have access to our combined beach. Being back from the road (Scenic Drive), children and pets are essentially free to roam.
We were treated with great waves, warm water, fantastic beach and beautiful sunsets. The property was perfect for our family. The steps to the water had washed out but the path down was very manageable, our 2 year old grandson made it both up and down. The Sullivans were friendly and very available. A great week of family fun.
Views and beach are spectacular, very private surroundings.Enjoyed every moment of the weekly stay.
What a great find! As others have stated the photos don't do it complete justice. The views of the lake from within the house are fantastic! The house was very clean and cozy. We both enjoyed the open floor plan from kitchen to living area for relaxing. One can just sit on the couch and stare out onto the lake enjoying the view through the magnificent windows that cover the entire living room. The bathrooms were spacious and clean. The owner's sister and husband were just as gracious as could be in welcoming us. My husband and I always prefer off-season privacy, so were happy to have the seclusion of the snow and cold as company. Muskegon State Park is just up the pike and made for great walks on the trails with the dogs. It was only a short trip to Grand Haven to enjoy a day of after Thanksgiving shopping as well.
Our only recommendation would be to have a working fireplace. We were a tad disappointed, though I'm sure the bulk of rentals are in the summer when this wouldn't be noticed. And, I'm sure it's a matter of taste, but we found the main bedroom queen bed to be on the far side of needing replacement--a little on the mushy side. We ended up switching to the twin bedded room for a more peaceful night's sleep.
Between the location, cleanliness, accommodation of the owners and price, this is a definite do-over for us!
The view from this house is gorgeous! The area is very quiet and peaceful. The new deck is where we spent every evening watching the sunset....beautiful! We had no problems, met with the owner who was very nice and helpful with suggestions and gave us some interesting facts about the house and area. Checked out on a Friday and by Tuesday our deposit check was at our house!
This is a very clean, comfortable vacation rental! The interior is much nicer than the pictures depict. The kitchen is awesome and the family room is very comfortable with the sectional sofa! The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. The view and the beach were AWESOME! The new stairs with their two decks (one at top and one half way down) are a great addition to the property. The water and weather was too cool for us to swim but we really enjoyed walking the beach and watching the sunsets. My only suggestion for the owners would be to add a DVD player. It's an awesome TV! Thanks for the wonderful stay, we hope to visit again! (thanks for allowing us to bring our dog :))
This is the perfect get away property. The cottage is nestled in the trees with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan. The house is accommodating, with a large living room/kitchen/dining room. This is the perfect place for a little down time, a walk on the beach and awesome sunsets. We will be back and back again!
Only minutes away by foot from the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex and Luge (featured on Fox News, Brett Baier Reporting, Feb. 9, 2015).
