Gather with loved ones in this early American home
This early American home (circa 1900) has been updated to host warm gatherings with your closest loved ones. The Captain's Red Cedar Country Retreat offers a peaceful, centrally located setting for the quintessential New England vacation.
The retreat is named after the original red cedar trees on the property, the nautical ambiance of the home, and the exotic pieces collected during my family's time living in Singapore, which you'll discover throughout the house. Imagine yourself as a seasoned sea captain returning home from your latest voyage, welcomed into the warmth of family in this uniquely appointed retreat.
**Bedrooms that Invite Restful Slumber**
Each bedroom is thoughtfully designed for comfort and peace, providing a restful space after a day of exploration. Experience the perfect blend of functionality and style with beds crafted for maximum comfort.
**Why Choose The Captain's Red Cedar Country Retreat?**
Staying in this home offers an experience grounded in authenticity and genuine care for our guests. For us, it’s the thoughtful details that make all the difference.
With keyless entry, guests have full access to the front and back yards, extending to the tree line between the two houses on the property. In the shared yard, you may meet our friendly neighbors.
The private driveway can easily accommodate up to four cars.
At The Retreat, we celebrate our differences and respect the unique journeys that have brought each guest to our door. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where everyone feels at home, and we open our arms to all who come with love and peace in their hearts.

The neighborhood is a flat dead end with three cul-de-sacs, perfect for walking and cycling. Just a short drive from your doorstep, indulge in delicious treats at the nearby Ferris Acres Creamery.
Explore the charm of Downtown Bethel, only 8 minutes away, or venture to Newtown and Danbury within 10-15 minutes. A rental car is essential to fully enjoy your stay in this tranquil area, as public transportation is limited.
Unwind in front of the authentic stone fireplace (for ambiance only, this is not a working fireplace) surrounded by friends and family. Needed a place to stay while attending a wedding. Plenty of room for our family. I especially appreciated the washer/dryer. Welcoming hosts, easy to reach when needed
Erika’s property was the perfect rental for our family. Her home was just a few miles from our family reunion in Newtown. Her home was clean and well supplied with items like paper towels, tp, garbage bags, etc. Communication was easy as was her check in and check out system. Beds were comfy. We would highly recommend.
The home was very clean and was perfect for being close to everywhere we needed to be. Erika was very communicative when we did not receive the automatic check in instructions or check out instructions. She even dropped off fans for us to use since the house doesn’t have AC.

Emily, thank you for your kind words! I wanted to clarify; the house has two window air conditioners, but May was unseasonably cool, so we hadn't installed them yet. They went it first thing for the next guests! You were caught in the 'in between'. I'm sorry for that.
A quaint little place with a lot of character. Very clean and the hosts are great. A bit small for 5 of us but the location was where we needed it to visit family.Listing states that it sleeps seven. I would not suggest more than four people with the single bathroom upstairs. Air-conditioning consisted of two undersized window units; one for upstairs, one for downstairs. Upstairs on max would not keep up with a 85 degree day.

Thank you for the feedback. 5 people (ideally 2 adult couples and a child) is based on the 2 queen beds and one single, but a single bathroom can be challenging. Also, we are currently exploring options to fix the airconditioning issue for the 2026 summer season. We always appreciate guest feedback and look to continually improve. Thanks again!
Out plane was 4 hours late getting into Westchester. We got an UBER to the house and arrived at 3 in the morning but could not access. The door code would not work. We tried contacting the owner by email and by telephone but no results. Contacted the VRBO customer service and they could not contact the owner nor could they help us. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere at 3-4am without a car and not able to access our VRBO. VERY FRUSTRATING. This also happened in May (while it was raining) that we could not access the cottage that this same owner managers. This all happened despite contacting them ahead of time to make sure we could access the home. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PERSON!

I apologize for your experience. I hope you were able to find other suitable accomodations. Our Internet was down, and the lock syncs the code via Bluetooth. The code was out of my control. I am a self managed operation and at three in the morning my phone goes into DND mode. In future, you might want to let your host know if you're arriving at 3:00 in the morning so they can take extra measures to be sure all goes smoothly for your check-in. A full refund was given.
