Squabetty’s magical charm appeals to both young and old, active and less active. The location is the ideal backdrop for all kinds of activities – quiet or active. Some people prefer to read, paint or write; others enjoy swimming in the brook-fed pool, playing in the stream, hiking the myriad of trails, or playing ping pong and listening to music in the spacious barn. This retreat, secluded as it may be, offers amenities of modern living -- a fully equipped kitchen and Wi-Fi internet. Just amazing
There is no other place that blends rustic with comfort the was Squabetty does. They really have thought of everything. We always leave noticing all the things we didn’t have time to enjoy. I hope we can return for many years to come!

Amazing property!
Squabetty is the best! My friends and I had a blast staying at this beautiful property. The pictures do not do it justice! We are already planning our trip for 2020. I'd recommend Squabetty to anyone!

Squabetty was even more magical then I remembered from my childhood.
I grew up coming to Squabetty as a child so the opportunity to stay here with my bridal party during the week of my wedding felt perfect. It truly was more magical then I remembered from my childhood. They have done an incredible job making it comfortable while keeping all the little touches that make it squabetty. It was incredible for all of us.

Paradise in Underhill, VT
Squabetty is the most amazing property and house, with history and character, numerous little corners to explore, and more places to sit and gaze into nature than one can discover in a long weekend. The property is amazing and offers so much fun for everyone, and the pool and sauna are simply the icing on the cake for relaxing. Not only is this an amazing place to stay with friends and family, we were married on the property and it was incredible. The barn offers a great space for dancing or late night corn hole, and the owners are prompt to answer questions, friendly, and helpful. Overall, my experience staying and getting married here was amazing and I already can't wait to find an excuse to go back.

The best cabin retreat you could ever hope for.
Squabetty was fantastic. Not only is the view of Mt. Mansfield incredible, but the amenities here are truly amazing. Everything is here and has been thoughtfully laid out, all down to the last detail. Had several comments from friends about how this was the “coolest house they’d ever been to” and that they were already planning separate trips to come back. We plan on returning and continuing to make memories at Squabetty for many years to come. Thank you for such a WONDERFUL stay!

Once again, perfection!
There can be no better setup for a group of friends to spend a long weekend. There is really no reason to leave the property once you arrive. Everything about the house is perfect, as is the barn, the sauna, pool, and lean to. We always hate leaving. A dream scenario.

Incredible Mountain Wedding Venue
From start to finish, this was more than I ever thought possible for a wedding venue. My family stayed in the house and we had about 15 people camp on the property for a jam packed wedding weekend. We had about 85 guests total and the barn was roomy enough for food and dancing! The place was spotless, the communication was clear and quick through the whole process and Pete, the groundskeeper was so friendly and helpful we actually invited him up for some BBQ on our wedding! The place is absolutely beautiful from the old house, full of history and stories, to the grounds which include a running stream, pool and sauna. We hope to revisit our wedding venue many times in the future. In fact, our friends were already planning a reunion at Squabetty by the end of the weekend!

It is indeed a Magical Place! All-time VRBO.
This is the best VRBO home I've ever rented. Hands down. The house is a living entity, and the grounds are a warm blanket. When you arrive, you can spend a whole day just uncovering the lids and reaching in for goodies. The house, the barn, the brook, the sauna, the pool, the lean to, all of it is the best part of the experience of Squabetty. The owners have thought of everything, they have you covered. The caretaker, Pete, is awesome and you kind of want him to stick around and hang. Hike, fish, relax, whatever. My guess is you won't leave the property once you arrive. We didn't.

Doesn't get any better than this
The house, the barn, the pool, the sauna, the brook, the woods, the history! If you're looking to get away from it all and enjoy some nature with friends and fam, this is THE place. Really versatile property that has something for everyone and the price is absolutely right! Really just a joy to be able to spend time here, right at the foot of Vermont's tallest mountain and space for everyone. Thank you!

magic in the mountains
We choose to have our wedding at Squabetty this summer. We were so enchanted by the property when were went to see the property that we turned our weekend event into an entire week. We were enjoyed hiking, swimming, yard games, barn dancing and quiet time on the deck watching the sunset. So many little places tucked away for private conversations or afternoon naps and yet the venue is large enough to accommodate a large crown for a celebration. The views of Mt.Mansfield are breathtaking. I think our favorite part was the sound of the river that lulled us to sleep each night. You'll never want to leave!

country retreat unique
We would highly recommend SQUA Betty and have always found it to be a beautiful quiet retreat with a charming rustic flair on our visits with the Deane's. A perfectly serene place to enjoy. We live nearby the property and own the very large field (optional rental ) along the road. Our Valley Dream Farm and farm stand offers certified organic produce - open seasonally, farm to table dinners with hayrides- reserved, rehearsal dinners and even floral arrangements for weddings. We can add to your experience at the Squa Betty mountain retreat.

My New Favorite Spot in Vermont
After searching through endless venues for our wedding this summer, we were lucky enough to find Squabetty. Immediately after our first visit, we knew it was the perfect place for us. We had a lot of friends and family coming in from out of state, so we were looking for a place where a lot of people could stay. Squabetty was able to accommodate most of our friends and family, including everyone in the wedding party and their significant others. There are so many rooms in the house it's easy to get lost. In addition to the amazing house, the location is spectacular. After the long drive up the driveway, you are quite literally on the side of Mt. Mansfield, with one of the peaks towering above you at all times. It is a perfect representation of the Green Mountains, and was a great way to show our friends why we are so proud to call Vermont our home. Every morning I would walk down to the pool for a refreshing dip, and then stop at the blueberry bush on the way back for fresh fruit for breakfast. There are so many charming little touches and fun activities, you'll never get bored. The owners were alway very easy to deal with, and it was clear that they have a great love for this place and take a lot of pride in it. We feel lucky to have spent time there, and hope to return soon.

fantastic stay
Three generations just spent five beautiful days at Squabetty and had a wonderful time despite some cool and some rainy days. The house has an unusual layout which made the stay all the better figuring out where to go. We were four families : grandparents and 3 families with children between 2 1/2 to 10 (9 of them). The barn was a great hit with ping pong as well as a large area for the 2 year old to use the old tricycle. The suspension bridge was fun every time we crossed it. The kids thought it was an adventure. Some other activities: hiking to the waterfall and beyond; use of the pool briefly (very cold) ; tether ball; swing set; great games and toys in the sun room. we had great dinners in the living room where we set up a double table to hold all 16 of us. We highly recommend this very comfortable, homey, remote place. The driveway about 1.5 miles was a challenge the first time but afterwards just a 10 minute ride. The only thing that could be improved was water pressure. the house was very clean and comfortable.

What a perfect place!
I rented the Squabetty property for a wedding and I couldn't have imagined a better location. First, it took us a full day to figure out where we were in the house. It is a rambling structure with so much to look at and explore, it was an adventure in itself. The high point included finding a Harvard yearbook photo of the original owner in top hat and tails in one of the countless bookshelves. When you walk in, you realize you aren't in a rental, but you are in someones home. It feels like generations of the Deane family have just stepped away for a few hours to go to town and said "make yourselves at home". The kitchens had every imaginable cooking utensil, there were extra blankets for colder nights, and plenty of extra towels, band-aids, tp (although we brought extra and left it there for the next guests) The wood-burning sauna worked great. We had it going in the afternoons a bit to keep warm between shuffling around in the stream and dipping in the stream-fed pool. We used it again on a couple of the colder nights. There isn't anything on the property we didn't use! We shuffle-boarded, we dipped in the pool, an adventurous friend slept in the lean-to. We played ping-pong until way too late. We sent a group of 5 hiking to the top of Mount Mansfield... We referenced old trail guides in the house in search of a "lake in the clouds" to no success. We ate dinner on the porch and watched fireflies. We saw foxes, chipmunks, and I heard rumors of someone in the party seeing a moose. The barn is plenty large enough for any dance party to hold and is so charming on its own, I almost didn't bother with the decorations I had brought for the wedding. The caretaker, Pete, was great. He showed us every last detail of the property and called to make sure everything was going well. When I panicked because we had ran out of water (the whole house is spring-fed and takes about an hour to re-fill once you've emptied the tank (pro tip: don't do laundry, dishes, and have 10 people showering all at the same time))he was there in no time to help us out. The owner was a serious pleasure to work with and was great about getting us things like barn-layouts for party-planning and a porta-potty for the wedding. The ONLY thing I would do differently is to bring a set of walkie-talkies. The property is huge and easy to get away in (which is kind of the best part, too). We're already saving our pennies to return, and hopefully return often.

Mountain Paradise
It rained a lot during our stay but we loved it anyway. What could be more relaxing than sitting on a covered porch, in front of a crackling fire(yes there is a fireplace on the porch) while it rained and we enjoyed the beautiful waterfall next to the porch. You might think a place like this don't exist anymore, but it does here...we loved every minute. So much to do, swim, hike, swing set for grandkids, tether ball...barn with ping pong table and more. We were never bored, but the best part was the gorgeous location. We hope to return again for another special stay at what is truly a "Serene Mountain Hide Away."

Wedding Weekend
So... I was reluctant to write a review about this house. My reluctance came from the fact that I wanted to keep wonderful secret all to myself. SquaBetty is a magical place. My husband and I chose the house as our wedding venue. I cannot say enough how beautiful and wonderful the house and the surroundings are. When you are there you feel like you time has stopped and you can relax. The house was clean for us when we arrived and the caretaker was there to greet us. We felt accommodated and so lucky that the family allows people to experience this wonderful property. I hope that those who rent the house in the future will take care of it and treat it as a piece of history to allow the family to keep on renting it for generations to come.

Majestic
I cannot say enough about this place. Every year myself and 10 of my closest friends play in a charity wiffleball tournament in Jericho, VT. For the past 10 years we have stayed at different places year after year, some good, some bad, but nothing stuck until we came here. We will try to book this every year! What an amazing place. The house has incredible character and history, the location is gorgeous, the space and property make you feel refreshed, there is a ton of activities to do from swimming to fishing to hanging out in the barn, firepits, shuffle board, you name it they have it. You are at about 1,000 ft in elevation and have breathtaking views of Mount Mansfield. I met the caretaker and the cleaning lady and they were super nice people that all seem to have a love for this place. I love the porch and the sound of the stream. It was the perfect location for us, we had plenty of room, everyone had a bed and I would recommended this place for a wedding, family reunion, class reunion, friends getting together, family vacation, just about anything.

Perfect Wedding Spot!
We have sadly returned from an outstanding week stay at Squabetty! Our daughter and her fiancé chose this beautiful location for their wedding and what a find it was. To begin with everything that we could ever need was there. The property was spotless and ready for out arrival. It was wonderful that we could house both families in the house as they came throughout the week and still had space to work/prepare for the wedding. The barn was a perfect venue for the bluegrass band and we truly rocked the house the night of the wedding. We were also able to set up a tent for the reception and house some campers as well. The wedding guests were awed by the beautiful location and the trip up the road just added to the ambience. Each night we were lulled to sleep by the stream running next to the house. Overall it was a fabulous stay and we hated to leave. What wonderful memories were made on the mountain!

We were blown away! Can't wait to go back.
Squabetty is a magical place to stay. The property has everything you could want in a vacation getaway. We were there for a week long family reunion and I can’t say that there was ever a minute where there wasn’t something to do or explore. As a matter of fact, having some knowledge of the area, we had plans to do some activities that we never got to, because there was simply no reason to leave for entertainment. We utilized everything that Squabetty has to offer – cooking and eating big family meals in the open air (the kitchen was very well equipped and the grill worked perfectly), swimming in the river fed pool, hiking and stacking rocks in the river, hiking the mountain trails, settling disputes on the tetherball court, evening long ping pong tournaments in the barn, taking the daily challenge of running the driveway – easier down than up! The homey comfort of the house made us feel as if we were hanging out at my grandmothers’ house – everyone from my 87 year old mother to my 13 year old daughter found something to love about this place. Just reading a book and enjoying the view from any of the many porches or the sun room at the back of the house was a treat. There was plenty of room for anyone to have privacy and enjoy the mountain in their own way – but also great common areas to gather for our crazy family games and story-telling. The bedrooms and beds were really comfortable, and the sound of the rushing river and the fresh mountain air were awesome. And I can’t forget to mention the fabulous sunsets every night – no matter what the weather was during the day – you want to be on the deck for sunset every night and watch the show. Even though it felt a world away – it was fairly easy to get to town for groceries and supplies. Our family thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this property for a great vacation – as relaxed or active as you choose. Thank you to the Deane family for sharing this treasure.

A magical retreat with historic charm
I stayed at Squabetty with a group of old friends. We had 10 adults and 3 children staying in this sprawling house and we were comfortable and not cramped at all. The house cannot be described in pictures or words. The approach to the house seems to remove you from civilization until you suddenly arrive at your own private Vermont paradise. There is a fresh, gurgling mountain stream with small waterfall that you cross to arrive at the house. There are trails in the woods surrounding the house and plenty of yard-like area around the house for children or pets to play. We did take our dog who was overjoyed, until a moose showed up in the yard! The house itself is a rustic antique with updated bathrooms and fully equipped kitchen. It is comfortable and clean with linens/towels provided. There is an "addition" that is immediately adjacent to the main house (accessible by the same porch) which has another small kitchen along with bedrooms and sitting area with beautiful view. We were there in the fall, so we did not use the tennis courts or swimming pool, but we did enjoy the barn which has table tennis and darts in a unique setting. Most of all, we enjoyed going for long walks, building fires in the outdoor fire pit and indoor fire place to play games and talk, and looking at the stars. During the fall, the colors here were stunning, so an excellent place for "leaf-peepers" as well. Everyone in our group was lamenting the end of our long-weekend - next time, we will go for at least a week. This property cannot be believed (or adequately described), until seen!

About the host

Host profile image
We are the third generation to enjoy the serenity of this mountain setting. As children, we summered here, enjoying making dams in the brook, playing dibble dabble in the pool, making up skits and performing them for our parents in the barn as well as enjoying ping pong tournaments. Hiking up the mountain, camping in the lean-to and walking local trails created wonderful memories.

Why they chose this property

Our grandparents bought the property in 1931 after summering in Stevensville for several years. Family lore has it that they found the place while exploring the back roads of Underhill. It was an abandoned farmhouse, but they could see its potential and fell in love with it.

What makes this property unique

Aside from our memories, the beauty of the setting -- its integration with nature, its privacy -- along with the wide range of possible activities is what we find so unique. It's a place to find solitude as well as spend quality time with family and friends.
