ABOUT PINE LANDING, CLARKSVILLE, & KERR LAKE
Pine Landing is a highly versatile home, and not many homes at Kerr Lake are able to be this accommodating; Pine does it to perfection perched right on the shore!
For the tight-knit family gathering at the house, they will see the accommodations keep them together comfortably, each doing what they wish. Play games using the high-speed Wi-Fi, read a book in the sun room, whip something up in the large kitchen, lay out on the sun deck, gather in the screened porch to rock and get caught up with one another, be delighted by the brilliant 72" Sony Bravia Hi-Def TV with the Sony Bravia surround sound system, take a walk across the street to the cluster of apple trees where deer spend a lot of time, swim off the dock, or just take that well deserved nap.
Sometimes, it's a family inviting a second family to join together at Pine Landing for a much busier week. Pine Landing is ready. Swimming at the dock every day, check! Got a boat, bring it! Don't have a boat, we'll help you rent one for the whole week and you will keep it at the dock of the house every night. Tuesday night, it's Bingo at the Community Center supporting the Ruritans! Wednesday, back at Pine, it's pizza and game night in the sunroom! Early in the morning, the Dads and kids all get up early to go on a guided canoe tour, meanwhile the Moms go to the Amish furniture factory a couple of towns over. The history buff in the family made tour reservations at a local gem they have on their list - Prestwould Plantation. Prestwould Plantation is the most intact and best documented pre-Civil War plantation surviving in Southside Virginia. And, if golf is your game, there's Kinderton Country Club featuring a Donald Ross designed course just five minutes from Pine Landing
Perhaps your whole family is all about the lake - imagine the fun your family can discover at Pine Landing. You are at a huge, lake-front home where playing in the lake, getting out on a boat, and having fun in the sun is all there is on your agenda ... for the whole week. You've got 800 miles of shoreline and 49,000 acres of water as your playground. After a great day of family time outside, freshly tanned, you come back to the house and grill your favorite meal. The aroma coming off the grill sets everyone's appetite! Sit, relax, enjoy dinner, have that beverage and rest knowing everything is just fine at Pine Landing.
The back yard is huge with a sloping walk to the lake and your own private dock with ladder. There is plenty of water depth for your big boat and launching ramps are less than five minutes from the house. So, bring your whole family, your boats and jet skis, and get ready to have plenty of quality time together. Oh, the dog is welcome, too.
Whatever your plans, here is more about the house!
ABOUT THE HOUSE
The house has a main level and a 'cottage' level which traces back to the house's history. In the 1950's after Kerr Lake was formed, just a summer cottage was on this land. Years later, my family built the house which stands today and massively renovated the summer cottage.
The main level has all of the major parts of the home - living room, sitting area around the wood-burning fireplace (not available in the summertime), dining area, kitchen, screened porch, open porch with grill, laundry room, and a full bathroom in the hall. There are two bedrooms: the Main Master Bedroom, with en-suite, has a king-size bed, a 32' HDTV and DVD player, two closets, and French doors opening out to a deck with a lake view. The Main Second Bedroom also has a king-size bed, a 32' HDTV and DVD player, a large closet, and two dressers. Both of these rooms also have luggage stands to make unpacking easier.
The adults enjoy this main level of the house. The living room boasts a wood burning fireplace (available when outside temperatures are 50 and below), the 72" Sony Bravia high definition TV coupled with the Sony Bravia home theater surround sound system, cable TV with 230+ channels, cloth and leather furniture. The kitchen open concept allowing the cooks to remain involved with the action in the living room, or friends may join the cooks by sitting at the kitchen six-seat island.
About six steps down from the main living area you arrive on the cottage level in the sunroom which has plenty of seating, many books, and two sets of French doors that reveal an open, sunny deck with lounge chairs and end tables.
Off the sunroom, there is the entrance (with a door) to the cottage. You enter the cottage living room which has a large window looking out to the lake, plenty of seating, and a 42" HDTV with DVD. The kids can gather here - they have their own living room (that door comes in handy if they get too loud), their own cable TV with 230+ channels, three bedrooms and two full baths, and separate HVAC system. The showers in these rooms have pre-set temperature maximum control for added peace of mind.
The cottage master bedroom has a queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom; the second bedroom also has a queen-size bed and en-suite, and the third bedroom – which is Pine's fifth bedroom - has two twin beds. The twin bedroom shares the bathroom of the second bedroom by entering a different door (think of a Jack & Jill bathroom). The couch in the cottage’s living room has a unique pull out bed that inflates by using a special electric air pump and is available to families with 11 or 12 people (the air pump is provided to you when you pick up the house keys).
For a schematic of the house’s layout, see the photos section.
There is plenty of parking for cars and trailers because there is a large, circular driveway, and there is a spur off leading to the additional parking area by the garage (sorry, the garage itself is not available for use).

About Rick Haffner
I am an American Sign Language/English Interpreter. When not working, I like escaping to Kerr Lake and getting out on the boat and jet skis. I have Dachshund and she goes with me everywhere, especially on vacation! The picture of above is my family out on Kerr Lake on sunny day. If you look closely, you'll see Millie, my miniature Dachshund, on the deck, midships.
Rick Haffner purchased this House in 1989
Why Rick Haffner chose Merifield Acres
Pine Landing has been in our family for many years and is perfect for us because it's just three hours from home. It's easy to get to, but remote enough that we really feel like we've gotten away from the hustle and bustle of busy cities. Small town America is the 'lap' of our country. Just like sitting on my Dad's lap as a kid, it's a safe, comfortable place to go back to over and over. It brings us great satisfaction to share Pine Landing with other families, knowing the house is giving pleasure and respite to many people.
What makes this House unique
The screened-in porch off the kitchen, overlooking the water, has got to be the most used space by my family and friends ... well, second to the kitchen. My gosh, how many hours we have spent there just talking and sharing with one another. We host a big group of friends every year for a gourmet cook-fest, now known as Cholesterol Fest because of the amount of butter so many delicious recipes call for. We began Cholo-Fest in 2003, loved every meal prepared, every calorie swallowed, and all those times spent with friends. Our philosophy of life is this: We work to live, we don't live to work. When it is strictly a family gathering at Pine, one of the rituals we have is whoever gets up first starts the coffee and runs into town to pick up a Richmond Times newspaper. We all go to the enclosed porch, drink coffee, read the newspaper and watch the lake wake up. It's then that someone offers to make breakfast for everyone - usually pancakes or eggs and bacon is on the menu. Then we plan out who's doing what that day. Is it boating, jet-skiing, antiquing in town, running over to South Boston (about 30 minutes away) to go to the movies or just hanging out at home? At night, we usually cook in every other night, and eat out the other nights. We love grilling out - burgers, steaks, chicken or lamb chops. We lovingly call the grill "Grill-Zilla" because a friend once put lamb chops he had soaked in olive oil over night right on the grill. That caused a huge flame burst that singed a tree limb above the deck. He scared everyone at first, but once we knew he was fine he came inside and, like the tree limb, he was singed. That's when Grill-Zilla was born.

champagne at sunset
we had a wonderful time! We build a fire on the beach area and had champagne at sunset and it was breathtaking.. 3 of them brought their kayaks and enjoyed the cove and point. The rooms were good and the open new kitchen was a real +! We would stay there again. :) Thanks again. Pam and family
I am so glad you had a great Thanksgiving with those folks most important to you at Pine Landing. Also, having a shoreline fire is a benefit of staying at the lake in the late Fall because the lake is lowered below its normal level by the Corps of Engineers which allows for shoreline fires.
You’re always welcome back!
What a GREAT place!
Incredible kitchen, and brand-new bath to boot. Loved all the space we had to spread out. I could sit all day on the screened-in porch and just stare at the water. Perfect place to get away.
Beautiful house and property, great fishing, lots of family fun
The house was beautiful, comfortable, and immaculately clean. The property had landscaped areas and natural areas. There was ample parking for vehicles and the boat trailer. We originally thought our whole family would be joining us (12 people) but we had 4 adults and 2 children staying. Whether you have 2 or 12 in this house, you'd be very comfortable and relaxed. The fishing was great. We ate fish 2 nights and came home with over 12 lbs. We saw deer in the yard, eagles, egret, cranes on the dock, heron and plenty of other birds flying around. The neighborhood was quiet, felt very safe and was convenient to the grocery story, gas station, restaurants and trash site. The owner, Richard, was easy to communicate with and very accommodating. We recommend and would rent this house again.
Thank you for your kind review of Pine Landing! The nature can really add to the beauty of the home and it sounds like all the creatures were in full display!
Perfect family vacation / anniversary trip
My husband and I visited Pine Landing with our 3 children, nephew and our fur baby and had a wonderful time! The house is set up perfectly so the kids had their own wing. The kitchen is huge with everything you could possibly need!
We swam at the dock everyday, stargazed and saw shooting stars, heard owls and saw many deer! Fishing would have been great but we had no room to pack our gear.
Rick was very helpful with our plans to rent a pontoon. He recommended Clarksville Watersports at Okoneechee State Park. We had the boat for 2 days and tied it off at our dock. We spent 2 days riding the lake with a tube, even went down by the dam. Highly recommend this! Just beautiful! If you have a boat, go out the cove to the right and look for a little island to the left ( the kids named it Cousins Island ) the water is shallow around the right side and front, you can walk out into the lake forever!
We spent a day in downtown Clarksville. Many great shops with awesome finds. We ate at the Lakeside Restaurant, great food! It is an old Victorian house and beautiful inside!
This family vacation/anniversary trip was the best yet and the kids are begging to go again! We were so sad to leave. Will definitely be back next summer!
Our only suggestion would be to add another router closer to the kids wing. The farthest 2 bedrooms were not able to access the WiFi for their gadgets.
Thank you Rick for the memories we will cherish for a lifetime!
Thank you for your review! I am so glad you enjoyed your time and made a bunch of memories with loved ones. I firmly believe making memories is what propels us in life, because in order to make memories we must be together, sharing in laughter, doing fun activities, and spending time at one another's side. That right there is why we share Pine Landing and are constantly improving the home.
Thank you for the tip, we will put in signal enhancement for the "cottage level" so the back rooms get WiFi.
A Wonderful Family Week at Pine Landing
Three generations of our family spent a memorable week at Pine Landing in August of this year. We arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were relaxing on the dock within the hour! We spent hours each day in the lake: it was perfect for swimming and for fishing. During our week, we made full use of all of the decks for morning coffee or evening drinks, played lawn games until dark, then relaxed with board games at the dining room table.
The spacious and well-stocked kitchen was perfect for our group. We loved the layout, including the big island, and the double refrigerators, sinks and dishwashers! The house is easy to love, too. There is so much space to spread out in the house: the separate areas of the house made it easy and comfortable for our group, allowing different activities as the day passed. Thank you Rick for sharing your beautiful Pine Landing with us. Your lakeside home is well maintained and you are easy to work with. You even have great neighbors! We learned so much about the lake and the area from your neighbor and he took our grandsons fishing!
We’re already looking forward to next year’s vacation at Pine Landing, sure that it’s going to be another great week!
Thank you for posting this review! I am so thankful to have travelers who go to Pine Landing and create lifelong memories. I firmly believe that laughter, delicious food, and good times when created with friends and family become the bedrock to a happy and fulfilling life. When we reminisce, it is these times we look back to - not the days of mediocrity or suffering. We recall the laughter, the kind that made our bellies hurt; we remember how the scent of steak on the grill filled the air, whetting our appetites - even the dogs were smacking their lips; and, somehow quirky things like, “Remember that epic nap we took on Wednesday afternoon?” become famous within the family. :)
The week you described at Pine Landing sounds so wholesome and real, no wonder you have already booked for next year! I am so glad you did!
Again, thank you for the review!
Perfect lake vacation in a beauty of a home, on small cove off main water body.
Upon arriving at the house, the minute I opened the door I knew the house would be perfect!
The kitchen is everything and more than one would expect for a rental!!!
The pictures that you see here online, are nice, but walking into the house is even nicer!
The "lower" section of the house with the three bedrooms two bathrooms and its own family room are perfect for creating a little space between visitors, in the event you need it, with a door between the family room and sun room. The younger adults retired in the evening to this area, and the older adults relaxed in the living room on main level.
The two main level bedrooms both with king beds were perfect, one master bedroom facing the back of house and door to porch. The laundry room has a side by side fridge/freezer for overflow beverages or what have you. We had two birthday while there, so we hid the cakes in the fridge in laundry room. The main floor bathroom across from laundry room was nice and spacious, for those wanting to change in a bathroom.
There are two separate air handlers, one for the lower level and the other for main level so you can accommodate to different likes of air tempererature.
We enjoyed sitting out in the screened porch just off the kitchen, there was a ceiling fan to move the air around.
There were ceiling fans in every room, to move the air around making the house very comfortable, for those that want that.
Honestly, I can't say enough good. The communication with owners was awesome, and of course meeting locals and chatting a bit is always nice.
We rented a golf cart, two of us have bad knees, and having the cart made getting back and forth from boat to house a simple task.
We also paid for the option of linens. On arrival there were two bins, one with all the bedding the other with towels, just waiting for us.
We were fortunate having a week of perfect weather, so we were out on the boats all day. We docked our pontoon at the dock at the house, and went down the road a bit for the ski boat (we pull it out at night). Things couldn't have been nicer!
This home is more like a home, furniture/kitchen than a rental house....very comfy! Lots of seating everywhere you go...I think the owners really have thought of everything.
Thank you, for allowing us to use your beautiful home. I didn't want to leave.
Alice - Thank you for your thorough review and compliments of Pine Landing! We truly want to deliver just the experience you write about - comfortable, plentiful, and accommodating in every way. Every season we challenge ourselves to up the ante by continually creating a perfect lakefront vacation home.
As we say in the South, "All y'all come back now, ya hear?!"
Situated Kerr Lake, also known as Buggs Island Lake, is a 49,000 acre lake that has 800 mile of shoreline and it straddles the Virginia/North Carolina border. The lake is an Army Corps of Engineers property used for flood control and is a drinking water supply for Virginia Beach. The rules that govern the lake are set by the Corps. One highlight of the rules is that approximately a small 30% of the shore was allowed to be developed for homes, and the remaining 70% is thick with trees and wildlife. What this means for you is the lake is very quiet and never, ever cluttered with boats. It is very common that on sunny summer days with great big blue skies and warm weather you will see no more than about 20 boats on the water. This makes for comfortable boat rides, a safer environment for skiing and tubing, and an opportunity to revel in the beauty of nature without having to dodge a boat or jet ski every 15 seconds. If you have ever been on a busy lake, you know exactly how it can damper an otherwise beautiful day. Clarksville is a classic American small town. There's just about everything you need in town, and many of your wants are there, too. Plenty of small shops for knick-knacks, an awesome bait and tackle shop, antique stores, a full-size grocery store that carries just about anything you can imagine. The town and others nearby like to have festivals during the summer, encouraging people from the region to join in celebrating the lake, wine, various fruits, etc. Speaking of fruits, during the summer be sure to look for the fresh vegetable and fruit stands that will pop up in town. The asparagus and strawberries are exceptional!
