About the property

Cozy hideway in Provence for 2-8 guests

My home is a cozy 2-story cottage with calm dignity, situated on quiet street only a short walking distance from the charming village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, and only a 7-min. cab ride from the Avignon TGV 'bullet' Train Station. It's by design a modest place, full of simple pleasures, and seems like a little piece of paradise to me, with Spanish tile roof, thick walls covered in vine keeping you cool inside, and hand-crafted wrought iron pergolas over the front and back terraces for shade and quiet meals. Set back from the public street on a private driveway, the place is safe and private, convenient for coming and going, exploring Provencal landmarks and cultural attractions in Avignon, St. Remy, Orange, Arles or Nimes. In our village, there are open-air markets with magnificent fruits and vegetables, bakeries, pharmacy, post office, several cafés and some decent restaurants. There's also public bus transportation to and from Avignon. In back of the place is a 20-foot stone wall originally built in Medieval times that runs between my strawberry garden and a protected public park that is chock full of Mediterranean pines and olive trees, bathing everything in a serenity that's only interrupted by bird songs. There is a jacuzzi on the rear terrace for hot baths. The home has 2 floors, and each one is an independent living unit for 4 guests. The upstairs apartment has a master bedroom, study, living room, a full kitchen, and modern shower/bathroom with washing machine & private toilet. The downstairs apartment has a master bedroom, a full kitchen, a living room and modern shower/bathroom with washing machine & private toilet. Both apartments have flat-screen TVs with scores of stations available, including CNBC. All windows have been upgraded with double panes to resist the sometimes rowdy Mistral winds that blow down the Rhone Valley. And there are screens on all windows for fresh breezes without the nuisance of flying pests. There is WiFi for the entire home which reaches both the front and back terraces for easy access. Picnic tables are set up on both terraces for intimate meals, day or night. The back terrace also includes a complete 'Roman' outdoor shower. The place is redolent with the aroma of thyme, laurel, lime blossom and pine. The home is ideally situated in the heart of Provence to explore all the region's cultural and culinary attractions or have a reflective home stay, cooking with great ingredients, listening to music, enjoying meals with family and friends on either of the home's shady terraces, not to mention cool siestas.

About Jerome Rudes

I am an American, with a French passport as well. I have undergraduate and graduate degrees from US universities, and now work in film post-production in New York, as well as a literary agent. As much as my busy professional life permits, I try to come back to my Provencal home for short, but always delightful stays.

Jerome Rudes purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Jerome Rudes chose France

For many years, I lived year-round in my Provencal home before re-locating to the East Coast of the US because of professional obligations. The property is very special to me, as I trust it will be to my guests, because of its wonderful location next to a beautiful park and close to a lovely unblemished village that is proud of its heritage, and not far from state-of-the-art rail and air transportation. In sum, my home is situated in a seemingly magical location, blessed with a great macro-climate and tranquility, right in the heart of Provence! And there's a new jacuzzi to relax in at the end of the day!

What makes this cottage unique

Easy to come and go, all modern furnishings and appliances, WiFi all around the property, quiet, safe surroundings, conveniently situated in the center of Provence, a wide variety of nearby restaurants and wineries to sample, plenty of cultural attractions, and a tranquil place to come home to, cozy in cool months, cool in warmer months. The jacuzzi on the back terrace is a new addition that is both pleasant and health-inducing.

Very good location near Avignon.

  • 4 of 5

Happy memories

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous location in a wonderful little town. Easy to get to Avignon and surrounding areas on day trips with a car or using public transportation. Loved the outdoor sitting areas. We had two families and it was perfect..separate sleeping floors and great spaces to relax and eat together. Would love to return some day.

Blissful Month in Provence

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough nice things about the apartment and the village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon. This is our second stay in the downstairs apartment. Last year we stayed 2 weeks and this year a month. The year in between brought great improvements including new screens on the windows, a large hot tub on the back patio, and a new comfortable mattress. The pictures and description represent the property perfectly The cottage is in the historic part of the town, the area with the best restaurants and ambience. Don't miss Thursday market day and Saturday's antique market. Thanks, Jerry for everything. We will be back!

A mistral haven

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit, and the first following the refurbishment of the downstairs space. It has been done really well, there is a spacious and comfortable open plan kitchen-living room, fully equipped even for the serious cook. There is a good size TV with many channels. We came with our three year old son and he loved it. We could put him in his own bed in our room (where the mattress is extremely comfortable too) and there was nothing for him to break or hurt himself on - so we could let him run around. Outside is secure once the gate is locked so that gave us peace of mind too. The jacuzzi is also a major new feature. Wow!

Villeneuve is to my mind far superior a place to stay than Avignon. It's cooler, calmer, and more beautiful too. The park behind the house is truly magnificent and great for walking with kids too.

All in all, one of my very favourite places to stay!!

Super cozy & excellent location

  • 5 of 5

Our family group of 9 (!) stayed a full week in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. The perfect location made it easy for us to discover the Provence region & most of us even walked to the city of Avignon. The kids often went to play football in the park right next to the house and we enjoyed the restaurants & cafés on the "place du village". We had three cars and easily parked in the street.

The house was ideal for adults and kids alike. Everyone could have their own space and we had several options to gather inside or outside. The cooks among us were all very impressed with the kitchen equipment available (much more than the usual equipment in rentals) and truly enjoyed cooking the fresh ingredients we bought at various markets. The little rain we had that week didn’t keep us from having fun as the spacious patio (with the Jacuzzi!) is covered (above and around) and had a big dining table, and the kitchen table in the ground floor apartment was also big enough to fit us all. We also had a barbecue night (coal was even provided!) and enjoyed the first strawberries in Jerry’s garden. If the night was a bit fresh, we had ample quilts available and we all slept very well, as the beds were comfy and the neighborhood very tranquil.

Everything was very easy to find and the atmosphere on both floors, although very different in style, was cozy and welcoming. We felt at home right away and truly enjoyed what actually was our first family vacation, and we'll definitely do it again!

This is the heart of Provence, perfect for discovering Avignon, St. Remy, Arles, Nimes, Marseille, Orange, and the Luberon. My place is located across the Rhone River from Avignon in a peaceful village next to a national park, which is full of Mediterranean pine trees and olive trees, blanketed by blissful silence. The local village is a 5-minute walk away, where there are open-air markets with magnificent fruits and vegetables, bakeries, a post office, several cafés and some decent restaurants. There's public transportation in the village as well to nearby Avignon, which is a major European cultural attraction, with museums, festivals, and live dance and music performances all year long.
