The close proximity of both town and Nature, combined with the exceptional attributes of our one of a kind log cabin and the very fair price, make our home an unbeatable choice for those who long to get away from it all into the quiet of wide open spaces and skies of Northwestern Colorado, but with some added comfort.
The first two things you will notice when you walk into our home is how full of light the house is and how you can't stop looking out the windows. Log cabins tend to be dark and a bit claustrophobic. Ours feels like a breath of fresh air.
Each room, including the bathrooms, has it's own forever view. When you can tear yourself away from the windows you will notice how charming, tastefully and simply this house is furnished and how beautifully it has been crafted. There is no clutter or personal stuff. The closets and cabinets are empty and ready for your use! At the same time there is everything you need for your comfort. The kitchen is extremely well supplied. The master bedroom has a comfy king size bed and bath with shower and its own private deck. The twin bedroom can easily be turned into another king and it also has it's own bath with shower. IF you can tear yourself away from the views and night skies there is a 37 inch flat screen TV in the living room with a Direct TV subscription or a DVD player. There is also a 5CD player if music is how you choose to relax. There is also an internet wireless connection. If there is a chill in the air the wood stove/fireplace heats the whole house and augments the in floor heating.
Outside on the large forever view deck there is an awning that can be unfurled to provide protection from the sun as you dine, read a book or watch the birds at the bird feeder. A barbecue allows you to cook outside in the summer. Usually people never want to leave to do anything else.
In addition, the 70 surrounding acres gives you plenty of room to roam and explore. The elk frequently visit during both summer and winter and the coyotes are usually heard yipping in the distance as you sleep at night.
South of Steamboat Springs around the ski area is especially crowded in both summer and winter. You will be in your own private Colorado in our one of a kind cabin on the hill.
Susie and Hansi live in Northern California, Susie in the wine country and Hansi just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Steamboat Springs has always been our 'second home' from the time we were very young and the ski area was just being built. We used to camp up on the ski mountain before there were any runs! Both of us lived in Steamboat for periods of our younger lives, attending the dance and drama camp, Stephens Perry Mansfield, skiing, guiding rivers and hiking in the mountains. We visit Steamboat as often as our lives allow as it as much a part of us as our Northern California homes.
Hansi Hagemeister purchased this cabin in 1965
This property was first discovered by our father in the 1960's when he fell in love with Steamboat and decided to fulfill his dream of owning a cattle ranch. The original ranch was 300 acres and extended across the Elk River. In 1975 he built the first version of our log cabin. For 20 years our family enjoyed spending time together in what our mother called 'dad's ranch in the sky'. In 1996 the cabin burned to the ground and his two daughters rebuilt the cabin as it was by this time an honored member of the family. All but 70 acres of the original ranch have been sold but the feeling is the same as it always has been, forever views across Colorado ranch land and mountains.
Views, tranquility, amazing summer wildflowers, elk migration, birds, fox, proximity to Steamboat, proximity to Wilderness Area
So beautiful comfortable and relaxing. Steamboat is a great place, a lot for kids to do and adults too! The cabin is fantastic! We hope to return!
We loved every minute of this private yet proximate to town cabin. It is comfortable, charming and of very high quality. Wildflowers were abundant as well as wildlife. Thanks so much Susie and Hansi for sharing your mountainside paradise.
We spent a wonderful week in early summer, loving every minute of our stay. Having rented dozens of cabins all around the country over the years, we can confidently say this is a special place and we feel lucky to have spent a short time here. Every window in the cabin has a beautiful view, each different than the next. As others have said, the pictures really don't do it justice. For example, all the ceilings are high and made of beautiful timbers, which can't be seen in any of the photos. And when you step out onto the deck, the mountains and valley absolutely surround you from every angle. In our opinion, there are only two minor things to be aware of. There is no dishwasher and the driveway could be a challenge to negotiate if you have a low clearance vehicle. A standard height car or truck will have no problem. But those points are easy to ignore when you visit this beautifully constructed, well maintained, and perfectly located cabin. If you enjoy your stay half as much as we did, you'll still consider yourself lucky to have stayed in this magnificent setting!!!
Yes, even as a man I would characterize our experience as like those usually found in a dream. Before you disregard my comments as "over the top" try to imagine the description of our stay. We spend a winter week in this cabin outside of Steamboat Springs. A week was not enough. Yes, we enjoyed the mountain tubing, the horseback riding, snow shoeing, dining & shopping in Steamboat. Wish we could have dog sledded, but it was booked up. We are not skiers. Not to belittle those fun times, but it was the time in the cabin that is hard to describe. The views. The silence. The peace. While this cabin sits on it's own 70 acres it overlooks many thousands of additional acres leading to and up majestic mountains. One evening I stood out on the deck sipping on a wine listing to snow touch the ground. That's how quiet it was. You could literally hear snow flakes touching down over thousands of acres. No, it was not sleet; just regular soft snow. Imagine waking each morning above snow covered valleys with a meandering river & below the towering mountain ranges. The mountains change their personality as the sun moves around them. The photo's on this web site fall short; upon entering we were surprised at how nice it was. We would have been happy with less. LOTS of windows...scenic overkill!!!! The owner & caretaker have gone to intentional effort to provide all the necessities aside from your regular groceries & snacks. We never wanted for a household/kitchen tool. Plenty of fireplace wood. Weber grill. The king size bed comforters...what can I say!! The driveway is a meandering switchback lane of about a tenth of a mile, an adventure in its own right. Even though it snowed most every day/night we never felt trapped. The plow guys kept our lane open. One of them actually attended high school near our home in Indiana. Small world. Yes, we would to back. Perhaps we should try out another season, although winter is tough to beat. It appears Steamboat Springs is more of a family area than some of the other ski towns. Suffice to say, we returned to Indiana with lasting memories of a week in a mountain cabin with my son and his wife. Tremendous.
We had a great time at your cabin. It is a beautiful location and a great looking cabin. We enjoyed the views and wildlife. We had a large herd of deer near your garage almost every morning with two bucks locking horns. We also had 25+ elk two mornings with 3 bulls competing for the cows. A lot of small wildlife including a porcupine. We enjoyed the seclusion as well, our backpacking days in the Zirkles are long gone with my mobility and health issues. It was good to see that part of Colorado again.
We had several disappointments.
The top sheet on the king bed in the master bedroom was badly stained. We discovered it late our first night and changed it with a clean top sheet we found in the hall closet. We left this sheet in the laundry .
We had the same surprise with the towels hanging in the master bath.
The guests who visited before us reported in the spiral notebook on the island, that a kitchen chair was broken and needed repair. The chair appears to have been just pushed together, not actually repaired. If you wish to continue to use it, it must be glued and pinned to be properly repaired and safe (that’s the woodworker in me bubbling out.)
Although we have roughed it in cabins without running water and no electricity we were expecting more from your cabin by the way you presented it in your VRBO advertisement and the price/day.
We notified the owner of these disappointments upon returning home from our vacation. The owner responded with an apology that they were breaking in a new caretaker. We give the 3 star rating because "transitioning a new caretaker" should not be on our nickel.
My wife and I stayed at the cabin for a week in July and loved it - I echo all the positive comments already provided. The visiting deer, elk and a bear were a treat and, of course, the mornings from the deck with the view and smells were unbeatable. We really enjoyed the cabin, have zero criticisms, highly recommend it for anyone wanting to get out of town to a very comfortable cabin, and definitely will rent it again! We also recommend securing some Sweetwood Cattle Co. steaks from Chase and Bev, the caretakers - the steaks are delicious.
Our custom log cabin is situated 5 miles north of downtown Steamboat Springs, 8 miles from Steamboat's World Class ski area and overlooks the famous for fly fishing Elk River and the Sleeping Giant Mountain to the West. Located on 70 acres in the heart of Colorado ranch land our hilltop cabin offers quiet and seclusion just minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs.
