About the property

The cabin was completely renovated in 2011 with a strong feeling of the old west. The large stone fireplace along with propane heat keep the cabin warm and cozy. The spacious upstairs loft features queen size and full size beds. There is one single rollaway available for extra sleeping downstairs. Kids love the separate bunk house out back. Kitchen has all the features of a modern home with a dinning table and bar. Bathroom has a shower/vintage claw foot tub combo along with a washer and dryer. All towels, linens and paper products are provided. There is a covered wrap around porch that features views of Myrtle Point, gorgeous pine, juniper and oak trees. Renters can relax around the table on the porch which has plenty of room to enjoy an outside meal. A year round spring attracts wildlife with frequent viewings of elk and turkey. We encourage you to bring your horses -- the riding is fantastic in the Tonto National Forest, which is right through the back gate. There are two 12x12 clean horse pens. Water provided. Renters are responsible for their horses feed and vet supplies.

We do not allow ATVs on the property except during hunting seasons. There is a 4 adult limit.

About Gino Ater

I live next to the cabin in a log home I built in 1986. I also own the old log ranch house on the property that dates back to 1898, which I am renovating.

Gino Ater purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Gino Ater chose Capital Territory & High Country

I bought my land in 1984 with the intent of building a vacation home. Having grown up in Tempe, my family would often come up to the Rim area for fun. After completion of my home I seemed to spend more time here and less in Tempe. In 1993 I moved here full time.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy. Solitude. Wildlife. Excellent hiking and horseback riding. The views from almost any where on the property are incredible.

Awesome Cabin in the Woods! Best Kept Secret!

  • 5 of 5

Our Anniversary stay at the Dead Mule Ranch far exceeded our expectations! My wife and I enjoyed a nice romantic getaway in this cozy cabin. It was perfect for us to relax, enjoy good food and wine, and play cards on the covered porch. Our bonus was the opportunity to meet Gina & Django, who were the perfect hosts. We also enjoyed hiking right off the back of the property and next time I'll bring my Mountain Bike, since the nearby trails would be fun to explore on two wheels! Thanks again for your hospitality and we hope to come back soon and often! There's not too many places this nice and remote within 1 1/2 hrs. drive from the valley.

Owner's Response: Todd I am so glad your Anniversary stay here at DMR was a memorable one.I agree with you that riding around on two wheels would be a great way to see some of the beautiful country right out the back door of the cabin. Please do bring your mountain bikes with you when you visit the cabin again. I look forward to visiting with you folks soon. Django says woof woof!!

A rustic charmer!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend does not normally care for 'rustic', and she was a little skeptical when we first arrived, but by the end of the evening she had to admit it was growing on her. By the end of our stay, she was actually taking photos of all of the handcrafted rustic details and antique items inside and out of the cabin. We enjoyed some canoeing on one of the rim lakes one day, and hiked with the dog on the National Forest land right out the back door the next. Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Gino and Django, but maybe next time. This is a quiet, peaceful location if you want to get off the beaten path and relax a bit.

Owner's Response: Mark Im happy to hear your girlfriend enjoyed the rustic decor of the cabin. My goal when I renovated the cabin was to give it a rustic mountain cabin look, yet keep it clean and inviting. Sorry I was not here to meet you folks and let your dog play with Django. I try to be here to welcome all of my guests and spend a bit of time getting to know them. Hope to see you back here this winter.

One of the best kept secrets in Payson!

  • 5 of 5

Pro's: This cabin is exactly as it looks - cozy, secluded, rustic, beautiful craftsmanship, everything you need for a great stay in beautiful Payson! Dog and family friendly, it's a great place to relax and enjoy yourself. It's not always easy finding a place that will welcome extra large dogs (we have Danes) but Gino graciously welcomed our entire brood and we are forever grateful!

Con's: The pictures don't do the experience justice! The property is gorgeous! The best kept secret is Gino and his puppy, Django! Their kindness and hospitality can't even begin to be reflected in a photo. The heart of this property definitely lies within Gino and Django. Truly a relaxing and wonderful weekend had by all in our family! Our dogs are still sleeping off all of the excitement as I type this. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Gino and Django!

Owner's Response: Holly Thank you for the kind words. I enjoyed meeting all of you family, both human and canine. Django had heaps of fun playing with your dogs!. It's not often that he meets dogs that are close to his size that want to romp and have fun in the woods. I'm looking forward to a return visit from you folks soon.

A wonderful cabin and spectacular riding

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cabin for a week in June, and brought along two of our horses. The cabin is lovely and beautifully situated in the pine forest. The riding was extraordinary...especially the Highline Trail. There are less adventurous rides out into Tonto National Forest right next to the cabin, as well. Gino, the owner of the property, is a friendly and helpful host, and very knowledgeable about trails in the area. We had a great 'vacation in the forest' and highly recommend this cabin.

Owner's Response: Very happy to hear that the cabin met up to your expectations . It is nice to get some feed back from horse people regarding all of the trails to ride in the area. Next time you folks come you must ride the See Canyon Trail. I am confident you would enjoy it.
