About the property

The cabin was completely renovated in 2011 with a strong feeling of the old west. The large stone fireplace along with propane heat keep the cabin warm and cozy. The spacious upstairs loft features queen size and full size beds. There is one single rollaway available for extra sleeping downstairs. Kids love the separate bunk house out back. Kitchen has all the features of a modern home with a dinning table and bar. Bathroom has a shower/vintage claw foot tub combo along with a washer and dryer. All towels, linens and paper products are provided. There is a covered wrap around porch that features views of Myrtle Point, gorgeous pine, juniper and oak trees. Renters can relax around the table on the porch which has plenty of room to enjoy an outside meal. A year round spring attracts wildlife with frequent viewings of elk and turkey. We encourage you to bring your horses -- the riding is fantastic in the Tonto National Forest, which is right through the back gate. There are two 12x12 clean horse pens. Water provided. Renters are responsible for their horses feed and vet supplies.

About Gino Ater

I live next to the cabin in a log home I built in 1986. I also own the old log ranch house on the property that dates back to 1898, which I am renovating.

Gino Ater purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Gino Ater chose Capital Territory & High Country

I bought my land in 1984 with the intent of building a vacation home. Having grown up in Tempe, my family would often come up to the Rim area for fun. After completion of my home I seemed to spend more time here and less in Tempe. In 1993 I moved here full time.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy. Solitude. Wildlife. Excellent hiking and horseback riding. The views from almost any where on the property are incredible.

An "Arizona Diamond"

  • 5 of 5

Highly recommended. Our family had a good time here. Quiet and peaceful with games around the fireplace, dinner from the grill and wine on the porch each night. We had fossil hunting treks through the woods (one trip accompanied by Django) and played baseball and frisbee in the nearby field. The highlight for our 9 year old was finding clear crystals known as "Arizona diamonds" at nearby Diamond Point--after Gino kindly showed us what to look for. Our 15 year old enjoyed having his own bunkhouse out back. The cabin and Gino are the real deal. Hope to be back. Thanks!

Owner's Response: I'm always glad to help the young ones in their search for fossils, Arizona diamonds or, if they are lucky, an arrow head. Django loves to welcome guest both human and canine to the ranch. And he is always ready to play or go on a walk to show them around. Glad your family had a good time here. Please do come back for a future visit!!

Gets Better Every Time

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at Dead Mule Ranch and it just keeps getting better! My boyfriend and I flew in from LA and Boston respectively to stay at DMR this year so you know it must be something special. The easily accessible National Forest gave us a nice break from our busy lives and the relaxing setting makes it easy to forget about the stresses of every day life. As many people have said Gino and Django are some of the highlights of staying at DMR, and we look forward to bringing our husky back next time. My favorite parts include the wrap around porch to watch the thunderstorms, the cozy fireplace, and the occasional surprise visit from Django. We will be back again next year!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you folks were able to coordinate your flights from far away to spend a Valentines get away here at DMR. When guests make the journey from a distant local to stay here I realize they enjoy staying here as much as I enjoy living here full time. Django was glad to get some ear scratches from both of you but I know what he really wanted was to run around and have play time with Mila. We both look forward to all of you visiting again when your schedule permits.

The Best "Cabin in the woods" Experience you'll have in AZ.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, with our small dog stayed 3 nights this past weekend and it was incredible! Every evening warm and cozy next to the fire place, and spent our days exploring the ranch and the bordering national forest. The best part of this whole experience is getting to visit with Gino and his adorable puppy dog Django... it really is the whole package! Incredible history all around you, and a great place for kids, dogs, and horses. I can't recommend this place enough, you won't be disappointed! I promise.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words Daniel. I had a great time sharing stories and drinking hot cider around the fireplace with you folks. Django misses his little friend already, He is alway glad when other canine guests show up so he has some one to romp with.I hope to see you folks here for another visit soon. Good luck getting drawn of elk!!!

Recoup and Renew

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our time spent in this beautifully kept and placed cabin not too far from Payson. Gino and Django were absolutely awesome and a joy. This cabin is tucked away in some of the most beautiful parts of Arizona, Payson, and Rim county. Tons of wildlife, and the snow was absolutely beautiful!!! We left feeling renewed and rejuvenated. We soooo look forward to our next stay!! :D

Owner's Response: Angel Thank you so much for the kind words. And a great big thank you for leaving the cabin so nice and clean!! I'm glad there was snow here for your stay as it adds to the mountain experience in a big way. The wildlife sightings here at the ranch are always a plus. Do your best to plan a stay in September during the elk rut.You can listen to the bulls bugle from the porch and often see them on the hill behind the cabin. I look for ward to seeing you seen and Django looks forward to more scratches and ear rubs.

Awesome Cabin in the Woods! Best Kept Secret!

  • 5 of 5

Our Anniversary stay at the Dead Mule Ranch far exceeded our expectations! My wife and I enjoyed a nice romantic getaway in this cozy cabin. It was perfect for us to relax, enjoy good food and wine, and play cards on the covered porch. Our bonus was the opportunity to meet Gina & Django, who were the perfect hosts. We also enjoyed hiking right off the back of the property and next time I'll bring my Mountain Bike, since the nearby trails would be fun to explore on two wheels! Thanks again for your hospitality and we hope to come back soon and often! There's not too many places this nice and remote within 1 1/2 hrs. drive from the valley.
