The cabin was completely renovated in 2011 with a strong feeling of the old west. The large stone fireplace along with propane heat keep the cabin warm and cozy. The spacious upstairs loft features queen size and full size beds. There is one single rollaway available for extra sleeping downstairs. Kids love the separate bunk house out back. Kitchen has all the features of a modern home with a dinning table and bar. Bathroom has a shower/vintage claw foot tub combo along with a washer and dryer. All towels, linens and paper products are provided. There is a covered wrap around porch that features views of Myrtle Point, gorgeous pine, juniper and oak trees. Renters can relax around the table on the porch which has plenty of room to enjoy an outside meal. A year round spring attracts wildlife with frequent viewings of elk and turkey. We encourage you to bring your horses -- the riding is fantastic in the Tonto National Forest, which is right through the back gate. There are two 12x12 clean horse pens. Water provided. Renters are responsible for their horses feed and vet supplies.
We do not allow ATVs on the property except during hunting seasons. There is a 4 adult limit.
I live next to the cabin in a log home I built in 1986. I also own the old log ranch house on the property that dates back to 1898, which I am renovating.
Gino Ater purchased this cabin in 2003
I bought my land in 1984 with the intent of building a vacation home. Having grown up in Tempe, my family would often come up to the Rim area for fun. After completion of my home I seemed to spend more time here and less in Tempe. In 1993 I moved here full time.
Privacy. Solitude. Wildlife. Excellent hiking and horseback riding. The views from almost any where on the property are incredible.
Our Anniversary stay at the Dead Mule Ranch far exceeded our expectations! My wife and I enjoyed a nice romantic getaway in this cozy cabin. It was perfect for us to relax, enjoy good food and wine, and play cards on the covered porch. Our bonus was the opportunity to meet Gina & Django, who were the perfect hosts. We also enjoyed hiking right off the back of the property and next time I'll bring my Mountain Bike, since the nearby trails would be fun to explore on two wheels! Thanks again for your hospitality and we hope to come back soon and often! There's not too many places this nice and remote within 1 1/2 hrs. drive from the valley.
My girlfriend and I had a good time here. Gino and Django were very nice.
My girlfriend does not normally care for 'rustic', and she was a little skeptical when we first arrived, but by the end of the evening she had to admit it was growing on her. By the end of our stay, she was actually taking photos of all of the handcrafted rustic details and antique items inside and out of the cabin. We enjoyed some canoeing on one of the rim lakes one day, and hiked with the dog on the National Forest land right out the back door the next. Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Gino and Django, but maybe next time. This is a quiet, peaceful location if you want to get off the beaten path and relax a bit.
Pro's: This cabin is exactly as it looks - cozy, secluded, rustic, beautiful craftsmanship, everything you need for a great stay in beautiful Payson! Dog and family friendly, it's a great place to relax and enjoy yourself. It's not always easy finding a place that will welcome extra large dogs (we have Danes) but Gino graciously welcomed our entire brood and we are forever grateful!
Con's: The pictures don't do the experience justice! The property is gorgeous! The best kept secret is Gino and his puppy, Django! Their kindness and hospitality can't even begin to be reflected in a photo. The heart of this property definitely lies within Gino and Django. Truly a relaxing and wonderful weekend had by all in our family! Our dogs are still sleeping off all of the excitement as I type this. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Gino and Django!
Came here with my best friend Kennedy and our mothers along with her brother aidan. Amazing time and a great place to stay! Fun to get away for a couple days and enjoy the beautiful scenery. definitely will come back again. This house was perfect and very beautiful. The owner was unbelievably nice. Very accommodating. I recommend this place for anyone!
We stayed in this cabin for a week in June, and brought along two of our horses. The cabin is lovely and beautifully situated in the pine forest. The riding was extraordinary...especially the Highline Trail. There are less adventurous rides out into Tonto National Forest right next to the cabin, as well. Gino, the owner of the property, is a friendly and helpful host, and very knowledgeable about trails in the area. We had a great 'vacation in the forest' and highly recommend this cabin.
The cabin is 3 miles from Tonto Creek with excellent trout fishing. Elk and turkey are commonly seen on the property. The Highline Trail is 2 miles away. Several other maintained trails are close by including Horton Creek which is 3 miles east. Restaurants and bars are 8 miles away. Payson, 22 miles away, offers antiquing, restaurants, bars, and a casino.
