About this property

Charming Apt Walkable to Shop, Eat & NYC Transport

Charming 740 Sq. Ft. One-Bedroom Apartment in a Renovated Victorian Home

Stay in a private third-floor apartment in a beautifully maintained Victorian home, ideally located for both Montclair and New York City.

HIGHLIGHTS
*Approximately 740 sq. ft. of private living space
*Easy access to NYC — approximately 30 minutes to Midtown by train
*Walk to nearby train and bus transportation
*Close to Montclair restaurants, cafés, shops, and entertainment
*Adjustable King bed with remote control
*TV with Roku and Wi-Fi
*Eat-in kitchen
*Fresh bamboo bed linens
*Thoughtfully cleaned and prepared for every guest

I prepare the apartment the way I would want to find a place when traveling myself: clean, comfortable, welcoming, and cared for with kindness and attention.

THE SPACE

*This spacious third-floor apartment is rented as either a one- or two-bedroom layout and includes approximately 741 square feet of living space.

*You have access to the king size bed/living room area, kitchen and bathroom. NOTE: The additional bedroom IS NOT included with this rental. If you are interested in renting as a two bedroom, please check out my profile or ask. Happy to help!

*The apartment includes an eat-in kitchen, a compact full bathroom with a separate dressing area, and a large loft-like bedroom/living area.

Sleeping accommodations include:

*Adjustable Leesa Sapira king bed

(All bed linens are bamboo and are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between guests.

Please Know Before Booking

*This apartment occupies the third floor of a historic Victorian home and is accessed by stairs only. There is no elevator.

*Because this is the upper floor of a Victorian home, some rooms feature architectural angles, arches, and rooflines that are part of the home's original character.

*Guests who prefer modern construction, completely uniform ceiling lines, or hotel-style architecture may prefer a different type of accommodation.

*The bathroom is fully functional but compact, as is common in older Victorian homes.

*The apartment is cooled by window air-conditioning units rather than central air. Window units provide effective cooling, but guests should expect some normal operating sound while they are running.

A Distinctive Garden Setting

*The property has a landscaped garden rather than a traditional front lawn. The garden includes a variety of established and native-style plantings and is intentionally different from a conventional grass yard.

*Many guests and neighbors especially enjoy the garden and the character it brings to the property.

*If your preference is a traditional suburban lawn with open green grass, this property may not be the best match for you.

*The goal is to contribute to our ecosystem and environment with love and intention.

Please Review the Photos

*The listing photos are intended to accurately represent the apartment, its furnishings, décor, architecture, and overall style.

*The apartment has a warm, collected, individual aesthetic rather than a minimalist or hotel-style design.

*Please review all photos carefully before booking to make sure the space suits your personal preferences.

Additional Services

Laundry and errand services may be available for an additional fee and must be arranged in advance.

House Rules & Reservation Transparency

*This is a family-friendly and business-traveler-friendly property located within a residential home and neighborhood.

*Parties, events, unauthorized gatherings, casual meet-ups, and illegal activity are not permitted.

*Because this is a private residential property, I may ask for basic information about the purpose of your stay before accepting a reservation.

*Guests should be comfortable providing a general reason for their visit.

My goal is simple: to provide a peaceful, comfortable, well-cared-for stay for guests who are a good match for the property.

GUEST ACCESS

*The apartment has a private, key-code entrance located on the side of the house—not through the front porch.

*If you are facing the front of the house, the guest entrance is on the left side, facing the green house next door.

*Please note the stairs before booking

*Because the apartment is located on the third floor, guests need to be comfortable climbing stairs.

*Approximately 15 outdoor steps lead to the private guest entrance.

*Once inside, there are approximately 18 additional indoor steps, separated by landings, to reach the third-floor apartment.

*There is no elevator.

*Please consider the stair access carefully if anyone in your group has mobility limitations, is traveling with very heavy luggage, or simply prefers accommodations without multiple flights of stairs.

*Motion-sensor lighting provides additional visibility and convenience when arriving or leaving after dark. With your private key code, you may come and go as you please.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
*I live on the premises and am available if you need assistance during your stay.

*You can reach me by phone or text, and I am generally just a knock on the door away. I also respect your privacy and will give you space to enjoy the apartment independently.

*If I am ever unavailable for a period of time, I will communicate that clearly and make appropriate arrangements so that assistance is still available if needed.

OTHER DETAILS TO NOTE
*Optional services may be available for an additional fee, including laundry assistance, errands, light daily tidying, and grocery or pantry stocking.

*If you would like groceries waiting for you when you arrive, you may place an online order in advance and coordinate delivery with me. Depending on the arrangement, I may also be able to receive and put away your order before arrival. Additional fees may apply.

*The kitchen is equipped for everyday cooking. If you need a particular kitchen item during your stay, please ask and I will do my best to help.

*The kitchen is compact but fully equipped for everyday cooking. Dining space includes a small table with seating for two, along with two counter stools.

Because this is a 740 sq. ft. third-floor apartment in a historic Victorian home, the dining area is intentionally space-efficient rather than a large formal dining room.

LAUNDRY

*There is no guest laundry inside the apartment.

*A nearby laundromat, Grove Laundry at 127 Grove Street in Montclair, offers self-service laundry as well as drop-off/pick-up options. Guests may also ask me about laundry assistance for an additional fee.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

This was my second stay at this property and the experience was just as remarkable as the last time. Sherry is a great communicator and makes sure you have everything you need to make checking in and out a breeze. The property itself is cozy and well organized and it’s just a few minutes walk from everything you could need. Will definitely be staying here again.

This place was wonderful! Very clean and comfortable. Just a short walk to restaurants and a train with direct 35 minute ride to Pen station NYC. Neighborhood is beautiful and felt very safe. Sherry, the owner, was very hospitable and attentive! We would definitely recommend her place and will be back!

Clean and quiet space. I rented the 1-bedroom apartment and had a great stay. The space was very clean and provided everything I was looking for while searching for properties in Montclair to stay at. If you're looking for somewhere to stay and explore Montclair I highly recommend it! The train station is less than a 15-minute walk away, and many shops and restaurants are just a 5-minute walk from the property. Sherry was an excellent host and was very responsive to any questions I had.

Everything was straightforward and well communicated. We really appreciated the location, space, and host. We were able to walk from the Walnut Street train stop to the apartment. It is 0.7 miles through a very nice neighborhood (but partially uphill from the train so it does take 10-20 minutes depending on luggage and age/health - rideshare options are available, but we liked the short walk). There was a grocery store and well-stocked minimart within walking distance and Sherry provided reusable grocery bags. Supportive of recycling / low-waste. Everyone in Montclair was very friendly!

About the host

Hosted by Sherry Blair

Host profile image
I have lived in this area my entire life. My family roots are in a nearby working-class community shaped by Irish, Scottish and Polish immigrants in the early 1900s, and Montclair has long been part of the area I call home.

Today, I live here with my two rescue dogs and truly enjoy everything this community has to offer.

I love learning, traveling, going to the beach, music, dancing, gardening, swimming, cooking, meeting new people and helping others.

What I enjoy most about hosting is the people. Over the years, I have welcomed guests from around the world who are here for all kinds of reasons—to celebrate happy occasions, visit family and friends, work, relocate, or simply enjoy the area. I believe people bring their own energy and stories into a home, and I feel genuinely grateful when guests choose to stay here.

My goal is to offer more than just a place to sleep. I want guests to feel comfortable, welcomed and cared for, while also having the privacy and independence to enjoy their stay in their own way.

Why they chose this property

I was originally drawn to Montclair because of its long-standing commitment to diversity and its sense of community. When I bought this home in 1997, I wanted to raise my then elementary-school-age son in a place that embraced difference and offered a rich, connected environment.

I also love Montclair's location. It offers easy access to New York City, Newark Airport, the Jersey Shore, and even the mountains, farms and small towns that make New Jersey so varied.

Over the years, it has been exciting to watch Montclair grow into such a vibrant and highly desirable community. The town offers an abundance of restaurants, cafés, cultural events, live entertainment, shopping, and the Montclair Art Museum, along with several lively business districts.

One of the things I appreciate most about my home is how walkable the location is. Guests can reach many restaurants, shops, grocery stores, entertainment options and public transportation on foot, which makes staying here especially convenient.

For me, Montclair offers a rare combination: the energy and amenities of a lively town, the charm of an established residential community, and convenient access to New York City and so much more.

What makes this property unique

What makes Chez Sherry unique is that it offers the warmth and character of a real historic home with the flexibility and privacy of separate guest apartments.

The property is a beautifully maintained Victorian home with original architectural details, individual character, and thoughtfully furnished spaces rather than a standardized hotel feel. Guests can reserve the second- or third-floor apartment separately as a one- or two-bedroom stay, or larger groups can reserve both apartments together.

The location is another major advantage. Guests can walk to restaurants, cafés, shopping, cultural attractions, groceries, and public transportation, while still enjoying the feel of an established residential neighborhood.

The property also has a distinctive landscaped garden rather than a traditional front lawn. It has become part of the personality of the home and is something many guests and neighbors especially enjoy.

Perhaps most importantly, this is not an absentee-run rental. I live on the property, have been hosting for more than a decade, and take great pride in preparing each apartment with the same care I would want when traveling myself. Guests have privacy and independence, but help is nearby when they need it.

Chez Sherry is best suited for guests who appreciate a home with history, personality, comfort, convenience, and a more personal style of hospitality.
