The Serendipity Cabin is nestled in the center of the Ocooch Mountain Range which is also known as Driftless Wisconsin. Sit outside on the raised porch and enjoy nature at its absolute best. You will hear the ripple of the Bad Axe River as it beckons the many woodland creatures down for a cool drink. Anglers from across the Country have come to Vernon County to test their skills in many of the area’s top producing trout streams. The Bad Axe River runs alongside the cabin and is accessible at the bottom of the hill. My brother John has graciously offered a tour of the Bad Axe Purdy Goat Farm to any visitor who is interested as well as a lesson in milking. He welcomes you to taste the fresh goat’s milk. You may even opt to take some home to try your hand at making your own goat cheese. Friends have told me that this was the best part of their Wisconsin experience. The goat farm is a hike up the hill just behind the cabin, or you may choose to make the short drive up to Nottingham Ridge.
This cabin is ideal for two couples traveling together who like their privacy as it has a bathroom upstairs and downstairs. There is also a small bar area on the lower level which includes a sink, coffee pot, electric tea kettle and a refrigerator.
The closest restaurant is the Norwegian Hollow Hideaway Bar and Grill which is a short drive from the cabin. They have a full bar and offer a variety of appetizers which include fried cheese curds (my personal favorite), burgers, pizza on Wednesdays and Friday night fish. Enjoy a cold one on the outside deck while the cows graze below. You will love this place.
The Driftless Wisconsin area is just south of Lacrosse and half way between Chicago and Minneapolis. It is only a half day drive from many of the cities in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. You will enjoy the breathtaking scenic drives along the Mississippi River, the Wisconsin River, and the Kickapoo River.
Check-in is after 4:00 p.m. and check-out is at 11:00 a.m. If you need an early check-in or late check-out please ask. We will be happy to accommodate as the schedule permits. There is a 3 NIGHT MINIMUM - NON-NEGOTIABLE.
The cabin's maximum capacity is 6 adults and 2 children. If you do not abide by this rule, you will be in violation of the contract. If we discover there are more than 6 adults staying at the cabin without prior approval, you will be asked to leave. Thank you for understanding that this rule is in place for a reason.
We are certain you will love this place almost as much as we do.
VERY IMPORTANT: There is a steep driveway. The drive will be plowed after snow; however, it is necessary to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle if you will be staying during the winter months.
I was born in Viroqua, Wisconsin, and currently live in Northeast Florida with my daughter. I only spent 6 years of my childhood living in Viroqua because my dad was in the US Navy. After retirement, my parents moved back to Nottingham Ridge in Viroqua. Their farm is just up the hill from my kitchen window at the cabin.
Momi Malspeis purchased this cabin in 2012
This 20 acre piece of land has been in my family for many years. My grandparents lived in a mobile home at the bottom of the hill (near the bridge) during the 1970's. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase it from my parents in December of 2011. The cabin (which was built off site) was moved to its current location in July of 2012, and is dedicated to the beautiful memory of my late husband, Chuck Malspeis.
This property is secluded and peaceful.
Very nice, quiet location to relax. Plenty of room for two couples, it feels like two separate apartments.
Thank you for everything, Momi, our stay was wonderful! We loved the cabin and all the thoughtful touches that made it so comfortable. It was exactly as described and had everything one could possibly need. I would recommend the Driftless Cafe. A real highlight was touring the goat farm. We appreciate the time your brother spent showing us around. We would definitely return for another stay!
The cabin is beautiful inside and out! It was a perfect home base for our sight-seeing in the area. The two floors were very nice for two couples.
We each had our own bathroom and sitting room. The owner's suggestions on restaurants were great and directions to the cabin were easy to follow. We would definitely stay here again!
This was the perfect place for a getaway. Very well maintained and kept. I can't wait to come back! Make sure you check out the goat farm too
We awoke several mornings to fog as the home is at a somewhat higher elevation and you are able to look down on the valley below. As the fog lifted it reminded me of Brigadoon. This is a very well maintained log home situated in a quiet valley with several trout streams in close proximity. The owner and the caretakers of her home were very pleasant and made sure we were informed on how to reach them should a need arise. You have the ability to see and do many things in this part of Wisconsin. Fly-fishing (my family's choice), antiquing, hiking at Norskedalen (highly recommend), enjoying the local pubs and eateries, catching up on that good book (my favorite), taking in a winery, and the list goes on. After spending your day doing some of the above, you have a nice home to come back to relax in with an outdoor fire pit to enjoy a cup of coffee, cold beer, or beverage of your choice while re-visiting the things you enjoyed about your day with family. A vacation home to go back to enjoy another time.
We had an awesome week at Serendipity Cabin. Spent the week with my grown kids. It is a beautiful home and property.Be ready with a book because you will be unplugged and relaxed in this location. The cabin has everything that you need to relax and enjoy your time here with friends and family. Well appointed and beautifully decorated. Very clean and well kept. The boys sharpened their fishing skills in the Bad Axe river below the property. Lots of walks taken. Visited local winery, antiques in Westby and The Driftless Cafe was awesome. Short drive to Lacrosse and the Mississippi River. Communication with host was great! Thanks again.
