My family and I have been vacationing on North Captiva Island for years. This is our 6th time to the island. We have never had such a disappointing experience. I wish I would have taken the prior review for this property more seriously, but we were outside of our refund window and after being reassured by the property manager we proceeded with our trip. Upon arrival to the island, Duncan with Tortuga Properties was to meet us and take us to our rental. We waited for over an hour with our groceries sitting in the hot sun . He didn't respond to our texts or phone calls and his voice mail was full. When we finally arrived at our house, he didn't walk the property with us or leave us with a golf cart. (He did drop off a golf cart a couple hours later, it had maintenance issues - not safe to drive on the bumpy sand paths of the island). It was obvious that the house had not been freshened up since the last cleaning. There were dead bugs everywhere, hair in the showers, dried crusty food on the frig handle and dried food on the outdoor table & filthy carpet. Mold and mildew was covering the walls of the screened porch, the outside walls, and the inside and outside of the windows. We looked for cleaning supplies to clean up and discovered we were left with none. I was able to contact Duncan later in the day to let him know we weren't pleased with the condition of the property and requested needed supplies and a different golf cart. He assured me he would bring supplies and a new golf cart by the end of the day, as well as send a cleaning crew first thing in the morning. He did not do any of those. We ended up leaving the property at 11 am the following day and moving to a different property.
We communicated with the owners, who were responsive, but did not accept any responsibility for the misrepresentation of their property. We were hopeful since we stayed one night and left because of the poor condition that we would be able to negotiate some form of refund. Again, with no acceptance of responsibility for the misrepresentation of their listing, they did finally agree to refund $982.97 for the meet & greet fees and the local taxes, reminding us that they did not have to do any of that and kept the $2,500 for the rental. This listing is not VRBO quality. It's more like a Motel 6. I do not recommend this property.
