LONSDALE MILL ISLAND GETAWAY SUITE/The Country Suite:

WELCOME to our circa 1829 limestone home, (originally The Lonsdale Grist Mill) on an island in the Salmon River between 2 waterfalls. We're just 2 hours east of Toronto and conveniently located between Prince Edward County's Sandbanks and Wineries and Kingston and The Thousand Islands.

The Country Suite is on the second floor of our home. There is a shared entrance to the house with us on the main floor and a staircase with fairly steepish steps to climb. There are handrails however. We are usually around on weekends and in the evenings. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed.

ROOM AMENITIES:

You will enjoy a lovely, comfortable suite with a self-contained kitchenette which includes a small fridge, microwave, toaster/convection oven, induction hot plate, french press coffee maker, tea, coffee, bottled water, all pots and pans, utensils, etc for light cooking. The suite has a French bedroom suite with a queen size bed, Tempurpedic memory foam mattress just perfect for falling asleep to the sound of the waterfalls outside your window and top quality bedding. Toiletries, bath robes and towels are provided. The Country Suite has antiques, oak floors, carpeting and hand sewn silk lampshades.

SPRING AND SUMMER AT THE MILL:

You have full access to our patio by the waterfalls, kayaks, a canoe, rowboat and touring bicycles during the warmer months and a riverside hot tub under the stars all at no extra charge. With waterfront on three sides, you'll likely want to spend some time on the river. Boats are provided from May until Thanksgiving weekend. The outdoor patio by the river has comfortable padded swivel chairs as well as a barbeque.

Enjoying nature is the main occupation here. Lying under a willow tree beside the waterfalls, paddling up the river, or touring the countryside by bicycle can really eat up a day. You can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the waterfalls. A waiver must be signed prior to using the facilities due to the inherent dangers associated with being near the water.

We live in the very picturesque historic hamlet of Lonsdale which has been the subject of many artists and photographers. The river is part of an historic canoe route and many enthusiasts brave the rapids in May. The river quietens come June for relaxing paddles. It is the river that gives this place it's magical vibe and brings the wildlife in abundance for our pleasure. Great Blue Herons, Song Birds, Eagles, Otters, Beavers, Muskrats, Geese, Ducks, Swans, Turtles, song birds and many others are all happy to call Lonsdale home or stop by to say hi. You never know who is going to drop by next. The grounds are full of flowers and birds and the sound of the waterfalls makes this an ideal spot to just kick back and enjoy.

FREE PROVINCIAL PARKS PASS INCLUDED SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY.

FOOD:

We encourage you to bring your own food and prepare light meals in your private kitchenette, as the closest restaurant is 6 km away and there are no stores in the immediate area. There are three grocery stores in Napanee , a 20 minute drive east or Belleville, a 25 minute drive west or in Picton, 30 minutes south. You may also use the outdoor barbeque. If you do not wish to cook, there is a pleasant diner just 6 km up the road that serves Greek and Canadian food and also does take out and is a good option for a decent cooked breakfast nearby. There are many nice restaurants and eateries within Napanee, Prince Edward and Belleville/Kingston areas. Regular and specialty teas, french press coffee, bottled water, milk, cream, sugar and honey are always available in your room. We also provide the little things for cooking that are difficult to transport such as cooking oil and spices. You are welcome to pick fresh herbs and salad greens from our organic vegetable gardens in the summer months. Please feel free to use our main floor freezer and fridge for extra food storage.

WIFI:

There is WiFi available for checking e-mails etc. We do not have access to unlimited internet so streaming and downloading movies is not available, however, there are free movie channels on the television.

FALL AND WINTER AT THE MILL:

WE OFFER A WONDERFUL FALL AND WINTER GETAWAY SPECIAL. BOOK ANY TWO NIGHTS AND YOU CAN STAY A THIRD NIGHT ABSOLUTELY FREE! IF YOU BOOK 4 NIGHTS, THEN YOU RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL TWO NIGHTS FREE! Our offer runs from October 29, 2016 until April 30, 2017.

Enjoy the outdoor all season hot tub under the stars by the river and waterfall. If the pond is frozen, bring your skates, snowshoes or cross country skis for fun right outside the back door. There are also several nearby cross country ski locations, walking trails, first class performances at Belleville's Empire and Kingston's Grand Theatre and many other seasonal attractions in our area during the cooler months.

LOCATION:

We are located 2 hours east of Toronto just 6 minutes from the 401. Picton is 30 minutes to the south, Kingston is 35 minutes east and Belleville is 25 minutes west. Kingston and The Thousand Islands, Prince Edward County Wineries and it's many Fine Restaurants and Sandbanks Provincial Park are all in a day's outing.

About Suzie Gutzman

My husband Jerry and I have lived here for 30 years. We moved from Kingston, my hometown, to Toronto for a few years and then made our way back to this area which has so much to offer.

Suzie Gutzman purchased this mill in 1986

Why Suzie Gutzman chose Thousand Islands

We bought this property when we were young and naiive. It has taken almost 30 years and the journey, like all journeys has been difficult at times but very rewarding. The Lonsdale Mill has reached a potential even we did not believe possible in the beginning. The beautiful Salmon River with the abundance of wildlife and the lulling of the waterfalls is what keeps us here. Even though we're not located anywhere in particular, we're so close to everything. A short drive in 4 directions takes us to many towns and cities. We just can't imagine ourselves anywhere else.

What makes this mill unique

Opportunity to stay in an historic mill on an island.

Three types of watercraft and touring bicycles for your enjoyment at no extra charge.

Outdoor, all season hot tub under the stars.

Swimming in the waterfalls.

Dining, reading and relaxing riverside.

Great opportunities for viewing birds and wildlife, such as otters, beavers, turtles, great blue herons and songbirds.

A true getaway experience in a scenic and historic setting.

The property both inside and outside is beautiful. We enjoyed our time in the gardens, sitting by the river and using the hot tub. Our room was very comfortable and the decor was beautiful. We would definitely stay here again the next time we visit this area.

Island Mill Getaway - Country Suite

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted with a warm welcome by Suzie and later met Jerry, two lovely people who made us feel so at home in their home.

A truly amazing place to stay, it reminded me so much of my childhood growing up near a mill in England. The building wraps you in loving comfort and makes you really feel 'at home away' with the 3' thick walls and the beautiful decor. We were invited to use the family kitchen and outside barbecue although our suite was extremely well furnished with everything to prepare meals. This time we mainly ate out and Suzie & Jerry pointed out places to eat and visit all within a short driving distance. Suzie had thought of everything you may need, even if we had forgotten to pack something we needn't have worried as everything was to hand if needed.

We plan on returning in the spring of 2017 when we hope to enjoy a more relaxed stay in the immediate area instead of doing all the 'touristy' things we did on this trip. Maybe we'll get to walk more, ride the bikes and probably venture out on the canoe or kayak all available to use. Prince Edward County and the area is so beautiful with many boutique shops and winery tours including cider tasting, also not forgetting the locally made county ice cream enjoyed by my husband who has a weak spot for ice cream.

Thank you for the wonderful experience of staying in such a beautiful restored centuries old building we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and staying with you.

Larry & Carole Powell, Ontario.

Owner's Response: I can't tell you how humbling it is to have such a glowing review written about our getaway. We had no idea just over two and a half years ago when we welcomed our very first guests that we would be meeting such wonderful people as yourselves. We're so glad you enjoyed your time here and we welcome you back with open arms any time. Really hope to see you both again as it's so nice to have a little dose of English.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Island Mill Getaway. Congenial hosts Susie and Jerry took very good care of us. We paddled on the river, relaxed in the hot tub and sat by the outdoor fire in the evening. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. We could cook meals in our room or take advantage of some of the good restaurants in Prince Edward County to the South of us. The surrounding property is beautifully maintained and there is fresh produce in the garden to add to your meal if you wish. We would recommend this location.

A beautiful and unique spot full of wonderful suprises

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay at The Island Mill Getaway. It was even better than what we expected, after reading all the wonderful reviews when we booked our suite. From the stunning garden, where we were invited to help ourselves to any fresh vegetables and herbs, to the gorgeous historical building, The Island Mill Getaway is a beautiful and unique setting. You can relax in the garden and watch the wildlife during the day. And then at night, while sitting in front of the fire or soaking in the hot tub, you can star gaze. It was a very welcome break from our busy day to day lives. Suzie and Jerry think of absolutely everything to make you feel at home. Our only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer. We will definitely be back!

Absolutely Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for 2 days in July. The setting, peace and quiet, the hospitality, and the fabulous accomodations far exceeded our expectations. Suzie and Gerry were the consummate hosts, always happy to help and ensure our stay was as comfortable as possible. It was so beautiful having breakfast outside on our private patio by the river, it was hard to leave to attend to our business in Picton. This now ranks of my favouite stay at such places. We plan to return just to experience this tranquility again, regardless of what else may bring us to the area.

We are located in the tiny, picturesque hamlet of Lonsdale. Your suite is in the Mill which was built circa 1829 and was the first building in the area. You can keep yourself very busy here in the summer cycling, walking and boating or by taking day trips to the many wineries, beaches, restaurants and shopping areas in Prince Edward County which is just minutes south of us. Kingston is also just a short 35 minute drive East and the town of Napanee is 19 minutes East where there are major grocery stores and chain restaurants and a pleasant downtown shopping area. The town of Belleville is 25 minutes West and has a nice shopping mall and quite a lot of restaurants and festivals during the summer months. Belleville's Empire Theatre presents world class acts during the year.
