About Heather Arvensis

My brother and I grew up in Seattle, went to college in Bellingham, and now live in Portland, OR. We've been coming to Lummi Island since we were born, and now that we have our own families we are carrying on the tradition.

Why Heather Arvensis chose San Juan Islands

Our family's history with Lummi Island spans decades, going back to when our grandparents used to bring our mom and her siblings out to play on the beach below the church as kids.

We spent our own childhoods exploring the island from our grandparents' house on Seacrest Drive during summers and holidays, making Lummi an inherent part of who we are and the values we have as adults.

The property was purchased by our parents in the early nineties from a friend of the family, and they built the house in 2000 to retire in. They lived here until the house recently passed into our care.

We love this house, and we love Lummi Island, but we aren't ready to retire anytime soon. In the meantime we are sharing it with others looking for a way to escape the stress of the city and enjoy what island life has to offer. We come here for peace and quiet, and a reminder of what's important in life. We both want our own families experience a bit of what we did growing up, and we hope others will come to Sunnyhill Meadows for the same reasons we do.

Relaxing with Gorgeous Views

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. The house was great. The views were terrific and the relaxation was needed. Our 3-year old said the best part was playing with his stomp rocket in the front yard - which he did for hours during our stay. We visited Sunset Beach, hiked a few of the lovely Island trails and watched deer who frequent the yard. The 5 minute-ferry makes visiting Bellingham an easy outing - I recommend Watcom Falls Park, Fairhaven, and Woods Coffee at Boulevard Park... but, really, I could have stayed on the island all week enjoying walks, views, a good book and a soaking bath. For adults and older kids - the island would be great for bike riding. The island is also very friendly and tight knit. My son forgot his backpack along one of the trails we hiked. It had his name in it... and that night we were surprised by a visitor at our door. We had met her at the reserve office earlier that day, and she was returning his backpack. It was such a sweet gesture... such a friendly Island. Lastly, thank you for the recommendation to get gas and groceries before visiting the island .... If only we had actually remembered to fill up on gas, we wouldn't have had to make the extra $20 trip back to Ferndale! :)

Great Weekend

We had great weather, and so great views. As others have mentioned the views are better than the photos show, and Lummi is small so this is close enough to everything. Our dog LOVED the open spaces and hikes, and the Curry Preserve is quite nearby.

A few notes on amenities as we read pretty much all the reviews and it seems like some comments may be out of date. As of May 2017: there is a grill a nice Weber kettle charcoal grill on the great deck. There were ample wine glasses, and ample pots pans for pretty extensive cooking. We cooked 2 breakfasts and a dinner. Did not find any kitchen utensils missing, corkscrew, can opener, lots of knives, etc. The range is very nice - 5 burner.

The beds were Queen size, not double upstairs as someone mentioned.

The Wifi worked great. I don't think the Directv was connected, but we didn't go there to watch TV. I believe they had Netflix, and some other internet based options (not an internet tv person, sorry).

Anyway, overall a great stay will definitely come back - the dog is missing it already.

Wonderful Getaway

We had a family getaway with five adults and three dogs at Heather's family's home. The home was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We cooked, read, played games and took long walks and scenic drives. We were there in March so didn't get to use the deck very much, but it would be a perfect place to kick back and bask in the view of Rosario Strait. I had a hard time tearing myself away from same view from inside the house, curled up on the couch next to the fire. Lummi Island is quiet, very scenic and the people we saw gave us the friendly island wave. Next time I'll bring my bike and see the island on two wheels.

Beautiful Property with lots of minor issues

To say this property is beautiful is truly an understatement. A large deck that overlooks the multiple islands that can be seen clearly before you even reach the home. Lots of space outside as well as in. There was only my husband, our dog, and myself so we never felt cramped and we could already see spending time there with our daughter and my mother in law. Lots of windows and almost everyone has a view, between the water, the woods, and the islands your never short on something to admire. With all the beauty, there was also a lot of small ugly things that we didn't feel should have been there. Multiple cob webs on light fixtures, and in the corners. The windows are great for looking at the view, but between being dirty and some that were cracked, as well as the sun light that streams in so bright that you have to leave a room. Then there was the couch pillow that had been chewed on my someones dog, and then it was kept on the couch with all the stuffing falling out from the back. Also, the multiple stains on the dining chairs, the couch, and carpets. I also have to mention as not only someone who loves to cook, but also as a mom/wife that the kitchen is not "fully" equipped to actually cook a meal. Lots of old, scratched, and dirty looking pans that need to be replaced ASAP! Lastly, if you are going to stress to your renters that the property is located on an island with only one store, then you as the OWNER need to provide them with adequate necessities. There was one roll of paper towels (only half left), no aluminum foil, only 2 towels for both up and down stairs, and not even an emergency kit (like maybe some band aids) was to be found in the house. Ive rented from over 6 different houses and in different states but this was the first time where I felt really uncomfortable with how little attention was paid to details about the house and what is needed for the people staying at your home. As beautiful and serene as the home/island is, the little details kept adding up so in the end we have decided we wont be returning to this particular home on the island. We thank you for the little hospitality that was shown and have a wonderful year!

10 minutes aboard the Whatcom Chief ferry takes visitors from Gooseberry Point to Lummi Island, just outside historic Bellingham Bay.

An often overlooked member of Washington State's San Juan Islands, Lummi Island measures just 10 miles from tip to tip, yet it features forests, farmlands, nature preserves, beaches, and mountain trails within a short walk, bike ride, or drive.

The local community consists of 800+ permanent residents, and several local businesses spread around various parts of the island. A general store offers basic groceries and goods, a small collection of restaurants and cafés feature Northwest cuisine and drinks, and island farms and artists' studios provide local culinary and cultural flavor.

Lummi Island is the perfect place to relax and explore. Quiet country roads are ideal for walks, bicycle rides, and scenic drives, and its small size and population ensure those seeking isolation can find peace and quiet, while activity seekers can engage in the landscape and community. Kayak rentals, beach combing, live music, and local festivals/events are common examples of island activities that most visitors can enjoy.

Just 17 miles away on the mainland, Bellingham and the surrounding area offer additional amenities, events, and activities. Some highlights include: the Ski-to-Sea race and festival, concerts at the historic Mt. Baker Theater, shopping in the Fairhaven arts district, and local restaurants and brewpubs featuring Northwest-style beer and food. We recommend Boundary Bay Brewing, Jalapeño's Mexican Restaurant, Village Books, and Fairhaven Bike and Mountain Sport, to name a few.

Just outside Bellingham there are a variety of places to enjoy the outdoors. Hikers and bikers will enjoy taking the interurban trail from Fairhaven to Larrabee State Park, more serious mountain bikers will be challenged by the trails of Galbraith Mountain, and skiers and snowboarders will be at home on the slopes of Mt. Baker. For those hoping for a quiet drive in the country, Chuckanut Drive offers a scenic cliffside route from Old Fairhaven down to the farmlands of the Skagit Valley.
