About the property

Beautiful House, georgous view, great location

The house sleeps 8 in 3 queen sized beds and one full size futon. It has 2 bathrooms and an awesome view. In the front yard there is a softball park, complete with teeter-totters, slide, swings and fire pit. The house has hardwood floors and is pet friendly. The small town of Whalan is located just 4 miles east of Lanesboro. You can walk, drive, swim, kayak, bike, or canoe between the two towns. The property is located just one block off the Root River State Bicycle Trail and about 3 blocks from the World Famous Pie Shop.

This 100+ year old house has been moved, from its original location across from the pie shop, and is now overlooking Gator Greens Mini Golf. The house has been gutted to the studs and totally redone. Great location for the cycling enthusiasts of all ages. Whalan is located just 4 miles from Lanesboro, and 8 miles from Peterson. It is some of the flattest parts of the trail, offering great views of the bluffs as well as the river.

About Tammy Hughes

Duane and I (Tammy) own and operate this house. Duane is originally from Lanesboro, and is a wonderful tour guide. He offers Horse drawn wagon rides, and jeep tours up and down the bluffs near Whalan. Tammy is originally from Duluth, and has migrated south. She works at the Mayo Clinic in Research PT and runs the Mini Golf course and keeps the guests happy.

Tammy Hughes purchased this house in 2013

Why Tammy Hughes chose Whalan

This house was 'Free to a good home', but we had to move it 4 blocks and completely remodel it. We put it on a walk out basement, and placed a large 10x20 deck overlooking the mini golf course, bike trail and the river. The inside offers 3 bedrooms all with great views. Lots of wild life to experience, deer, squirrels, birds and the like. Private setting.

What makes this house unique

This house has a great view, wonderful deck and exceptional city park in your front yard, which includes a baseball diamond, fire pit, swings teeter totters, slides and monkey bars that is one of Whalan's best kept secrets. Located near the end of Bench Street, it offers you a private, wooded adventure. Nestled along side the original homestead of John Whalahann. John deeded the property to the city of Whalan and thus created Whalan. The house is currently being remodeled too. The house is located just one block off the Root River State Bicycle trail, allowing for Cycling enthusiasts great access to the trail.

Great location and perfect house for 4 adults to relax and enjoy the area!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house! It was the perfect location in the quiet town of Whalan midway on the trail between the eastern and western ends! It was close enough to Lanesboro to be convenient but far enough away to feel like we had some peace from the crowds. The house fits 6 but was a perfect fit for 4 adults to not feel overcrowded. We were very happy to have the park next door with a fire pit to use both nights we stayed and the weather couldn't have been better while we were there. And the beds were very comfortable!

Beautiful View

  • 5 of 5

We were traveling for business in the area and stayed here. A short drive to our place of business and the wildlife was everywhere. Eagles, hawks, deer ... wish we could have stayed longer. The deer walk right around the house both early morning and late evening. Oh, and the beds were very comfortable. All the amenities of home. Thanks for a very nice visit.

Nice house, great location!

  • 4 of 5

Great retreat for bikers riding the Root River Trail. This house is in sleepy little Whalan, MN. If you want more in the way of restaurants and shopping, Lanesboro is less than a 5 mile ride on the trail.

Lovely and quiet

  • 4 of 5

We came during a few weekdays in August. The house was nice and clean, on the end of a quiet street. In the summer, you can only see trees - which is nice - but down the hill from the deck is the bike trail and river. We enjoyed being able to hop on our bikes and ride around town, or down to the river or into Lanesboro 4.5 miles away. We would definitely stay here again.

Quiet, on

  • 3 of 5

This house was comfortable for 5, yet could never imagine 10 ppl. Bedrooms are small. It is very close to the park-as in Birdseye view of the outhouses- upside to the park is the fire pit. The river and trail are a bike ride away. The mini golf is down a wooded hill and not visible as the desc.says. Be aware the owners expect you to clean (sweep, vacuum, etc) and acknowledging a miscommunication w/the checkout time, (wasn t anywhere in the house and is 10am) decided to come in and start laundry while my family and I were still there (Perhaps a second set of sheets might solve this issue) lending itself to an awkward and intrusive experience, either way, we left the place cleaner than how we found it. Also note, charges are $25 per child, per day, so the $$ can add up if you bring your family, so the reservation price isn't entirely accurate. My children are older but not 18 so again, worth mentioning. Lastly, there is minimal to no internet service despite the house having wifi access. We have a hotspot, etc but the area is not conducive to accessibility. Lanesboro is 4 miles away. Whalen is a cute town yet limited (population is 67) yet provided an awesome fireworks show:)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We have eliminated all of the chore list, other than take out the garbage. During the last year and a half, I have been battling cancer, and to ease my burden during cancer treatment, and to keep providing you a nice place to stay, we implemented the chore list. I am recovering, so should be able to do more. Thank you for staying
