Perfect family home

This was a great family vacation home- nice old house with lots of character, and lots of extras here. The kids enjoyed the nice back yard for playing catch, and the invitation to hike the mowed trails behind the house, a fun evening adventure. The adults enjoyed the front porch with the perfect lake view.

Wonderful location great house on water front

Great house with personality we were a family of 8 and had tons of room we had plenty of room to get away from each other if we wanted too fully equipped kitchen every thing we needed plenty of linens everything we needed soaps tp paper towels even a first aid kit all you need to bring are personal items owner great and responsive in reasonable time we will return

Book elsewhere

I want to start by sharing that I am an experienced traveller who has rented my own property and stayed in rentals across the globe, and I have never written a single negative review until now. The single greatest issue is the property owner's lack of professionalism and questionable ethics. Please note that I am not the only one with these concerns (see the review below, "Serious concerns against property owner/manager"). As such, I would not recommend this property to any friends or family looking for a trip to Kelley's Island.

For those looking for the full version of this story, there were a large group of ladies coming to Kelley's Island together. However, I had no intention of violating the rental agreement, so three separate accommodations were booked (The Old Nest being one of them [invoices for both other rentals to the owner]). The property was fair at best & required updates (examples: window in the bedroom I slept in did not stay latched to the exterior wall, & it banged so loudly agains the a/c unit in the window at night that I had to sleep on the floor of another room; the first floor doesn't have a/c at all & since were were there during a weekend filled with Mayflies people sleeping on this floor were extremely uncomfortable since they could not even open windows as the screen quality was so bad there would have been bugs everywhere; we had issues with some kitchen appliances & a toilet that was repaired by one of the guests several times over our stay). However, I had no intention of complaining about these issues, until I received a message from the owner (after inquiring about my security deposit), stating that there were too many guests & that I would not only be losing my security deposit, but she would be sending a bill for repairs to the porch.

Having rented myself, I understand & would also have been upset if there were too many guests at my home. However, I responded that this wasn't the case & that we actually went out of our way to take care of her property (examples: hosing down & sweeping the porch every morning, thoroughly cleaning the kitchen, repairing issues with the toilet, etc.). Yet, it our conversation my efforts to engage in a respectful dialogue about any issues were met with sarcasm.

In short, I do want to warn other travelers- this property owner will withhold your security deposit, even if you do nothing to violate your rental agreement. If you have any other options do not book this property.

Owner's Response: It is common practice to have one unfortunate renter each season and we expected to have your negatively expressed in words. Many islanders notified us of your over crowding. Again, broken front porch railing and excessive garbage which alone you should have been charged. We will continue to cherish our home and monitor against experiences such as yours.

Family getaway and wedding guest home

The best times were spent sitting on the porch and watching the world go by including the storm that came in from the west across the lake. The home is full of interesting, sometimes quirky, displays of history or collections. Tootie would have been an interesting person to meet. We had a blast as a family of 7. Think it would be comfortable for 10. We would definitely come back with our family. Owner seemed island laid back, but responsive to e-mails and helpful/kind.

Tale of two stories

Wow, where do I start? Let's start with the positives. The home location is fantastic and everything advertised. As far as the property was concerned we were very pleased. It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Elfers whom was staying in the house behind us, his daughter owns the property. I would give the home a 5 star rating. Amanda (owner) was very kind and helpful from the time of booking to the day we arrived.

VRBO is beyond terrible. They double booked our reservation and attempted to blame us. We only received a portion of the money back from THEIR mistake even though the problem was corrected during the "100% refund FREE period" that VRBO advertises. VRBO customer service was a sad joke, they will steal your money and laugh in your face when you try to get it back. I knew that I would never see my deposit back after being scammed with a double booking. I had to pay our balance due directly to Amanda (owner) due to unexplained malfunctions with the VRBO payment site. Amanda assured me that I would get our deposit back, that was a month ago and still no deposit. You will have to fight for everything that should be an automatic courtesy. If you are looking to relax, do not book with VRBO, try to negotiate a deposit that you do not mind losing because you won't get it back no matter who promises you will. The weekend stay was relaxing, which is needed for the months of anxiety they provide before and after the stay.

Amazing!

I rented this house to have my father's 70th birthday party and it was perfect! The house has a ton of character, and Amanda the owner was a delight to work with.

We had an amazing weekend with family, and plan to do it again next year!
