Overview

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 7

Carnmore is a four bedroom, one and a half bathroom Irish cottage located in the Connemara district of Galway. It is on the Wild Atlantic Way and is located on 16 acres of typically rugged West Galway farmland. Nestled in the Twelve Bens mountain range and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Carnmore is the most relaxing holiday spot one can dream of. Carnmore offers guests the opportunity for gentle hill walking or more challenging mountain climbing, fishing for salmon in local streams, and swimming at the nearby beach. Other recreational options include shopping in the nearby towns of Westport and Clifden or golfing on the challenging links of Connemara Golf Club.

Carnmore was designed as a place to relax. We strongly encourage you to enjoy a cozy fire, read the hundreds of books at Carnmore, share stories about the day or tell tales of the legends of Connemara ... or just relax and soak in the spectacular Connemara views, like the view from the sitting room.

About John Connelly

Carnmore is a family home built by my father and from whom I bought the home. We live in the Washington DC area, but also hold Irish citizenship. Work takes me to Europe 5-6 times per year, so stops at Carnmore are often and refreshing. We are blessed that our children love the experience of other cultures, with a son now working in China, two daughters who have studied and worked in France, and a third daughter who took courses in Ireland.

John Connelly purchased this cottage in 1973

Why John Connelly chose County Galway

Spent several summers working in Ireland as teenager. Carnmore was family home that we cared deeply about keeping with us.

What makes this cottage unique

Complete get away. By design, we do not have a television, radio, telephone or even a clock in the home. The thousands of books and stunning views are enough to keep guests enjoying Carnmore. Why go to an Irish holiday home to worry about the time!?!

A little piece of rugged perfection

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to thank you for the stay at your house. Our whole holiday has been absolutely stunning and it was so wonderful to spend at week at yours with a nice mix between relaxing and being active.

We managed to hike diamond hill, bike around Inishboffin and achill islands, play on lettergesh beach, amongst others, listen to live music and hang out at the house reading, doing puzzles and playing lots of games!

The girls also had two activity filled days at the activity centre which they absolutely loved and left me and my husband time to go off and explore the area on longer bike rides.

There is so much to do and see her and yet it is so relaxing and peaceful. It's wonderful that even sitting inside playing games and reading we still felt as though we were outside because the views are so stunning through those lovely big windows!!

Needless to say we were very sad to leave! I hope that many others can enjoy this little piece of perfection.

Owner's Response: Helen. It is so gratifying to know your family enjoyed Carnmore, and took advantage of the quiet and the activities, the inside of the pubs and the views from Carnmore. It is a special place to get away. John

Adorable cottage with spectacular views of the Atlantic,

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is spacious and well equipped. Excellent beaches and hills to explore. We walked, rode bikes, explored the hills and beaches, went horseback riding, and had many fires in the fireplace at night! So relaxing enjoying the view of the Atlantic from the family room. Lots of books and games to play.

Owner's Response: Colleen: You stayed active with the variety of Carnmore's local options! Thanks for staying at Carnmore and glad you and your family had such positive experiences. We are replenishing the bookshelves -- giving you an excuse to come back and read more next time, as you look out at the ocean! John

Fabulous getaway with everything we needed

  • 5 of 5

Forget driving around to get "views." If you stay here, you can do what you want to do and then come home for the best views while simply relaxing! It was AMAZING and a tremendous blessing to wake up each morning to a panorama unrivaled by anything else we encountered during our travels. With the long days in late May, we were able to hike, plus just sit and gaze at the view or read. It never rained while we were there, but if it had, we would have been happy to amuse ourselves with the great assortment of books and board games. The photos are representative of the current state of the property. John obviously loves sharing his home and his love for the area; communication was very easy and access to the house on arrival was flawless. A+ for hospitality! The house is conveniently located for everything we needed or wanted. It was great to have a separate washer and dryer and a coffee maker (yay)! Data signal is great if you have to connect, but you'll never regret using the opportunity to connect with your family instead. It is a 5 minute drive to Kings cafe if you need wifi - great soup, sandwiches and especially the cake! Really good food at Paddy Coynes in Tully Cross.

Owner's Response: Mary: Thanks for the kinds words. Margaret and I are enthusiastic about Carnmore and so enjoy sharing the home and surroundings with others. We cannot get guarantee all that it won't rain, but "there is not such things as bad weather only the wrong clothes!" Thanks again and we would enjoy having you back anytime. (Would your daughter admits it evens beats the Rebels of Cork?) John

Our Favorite Stop!

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with Carnmore and the Connemara landscape. We just hate that we couldn’t stay longer. The house is cozy, comfortable and the perfect separation from the crazy lives we’ve grown accustomed to. Connemara will open your eyes to a side of living you never knew you craved. We started our mornings with a cup of coffee enjoying the spectacular views of the ocean and watching the sheep graze (sometimes in the front yard). We would walk down to the beach directly from the house, or drive off to hike Diamond Hill or visit the Doo Lough Pass. We’d stop into Paddy Coynes Pub in Tully Cross in the evening – a place filled with character and good food (only 3 km from Carnmore) and finish our night with a pint curled up in front of the turf fire, which Mary graciously set up and showed us how to light.

John and Margaret are fabulous, responsive owners that have a true passion for sharing the Connemara experience with their guests. Mary is a fantastic local caretaker of the property who is available whenever you need her help or advice. Whether visiting Connermara with the whole family, or for a getaway for two, I would highly recommend staying at Carnmore.

Spectacular breathtaking view

Very kind contact, patient answers of many questions we had. Special thank for that, John.

Only one week, time was running... Great landscape of Connemara - we loved it. Unbelievable view from livingroom and bedroom. We will never forget it. I am sure.

Perfect, perfect, perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely LOVED this house for our short time in Connemara! If you are looking for a peaceful house in Ireland that is not too far from great places (Galway, Westport, Connemara National Park) this is the ideal place. The views alone are a must see!

John provided us with great recommendations, and we truly enjoyed everything from meeting & chatting with the locals, dining in Westport and hiking in the National Park. Mary, who takes care of the house, is wonderful and seemed to always be available (even sending her husband, Patrick, to save us when we locked ourselves out). She even brought us some turf so that we could experience a proper turf fire in the fireplace while reading a book from the library in the house. If we ever come back to Ireland, we would be so lucky to be able to stay here again!

Thanks John for sharing this part of the world with us.
