About Michael Malin

Hola! It is with pleasure to find out that you are interested in Makaira Mazara. I grew up in New Jersey and now live in New York City. My background was as a Big Four consultant and then as an executive and CFO in the computer security industry. I spend four-to-five months a year down in Nosara and have come to love the area. I am an avid fisherman and think the variety and productivity of fishing in Costa Rica is unparalleled. With everything to do / see / explore in the area, the main reasons I enjoy spending time in Nosara are the people and the community. The diversity of the ex-pat community is fascinating, and the locals could not be nicer, more welcoming and friendlier. It is truly a special place!

Michael Malin purchased this house in 2013

Why Michael Malin chose Playa Guiones

I have put my blood, sweat and tears into the house and property. It has become a labor of love and there's nothing better than sharing my home and meeting new people. Many are shocked when they see the transformation of the house over the years. I am constantly updating, maintaining and re-investing in the property in order to ensure it is clean, comfortable, beautiful and updated with amenities that guests look for when visiting (internet, water tank, new linens, etc.). I take great pride in the house and am an active owner on-top of what's going on in the house, around the property and in the community. All with the intent to make it a special place for family, friends and guests to come down and relax as they soak in all that Nosara has to offer. Pura Vida!

Relaxing retreat in Nosara

  • 5 of 5

Nosara and Makaira Mazara are a must! Mike, the owner helped ensure we had a seamless arrival by arranging for a driver to greet us at the Liberia airport and take us to the house where we had a local woman prepare us a meal after our long trip. I highly recommend you hire her for your arrival or another night where you want to relax and stay in.

The house is exactly as it appears in the photos and has all the essentials for a great stay, pool, hammock, covered rancho with a comfy lounger to read or nap. There are plenty of beach towels, washer/dryer, gas grill and of course a blender for some frozen drinks using local fruits from the truck. We enjoyed these each evening at the high top tables. Also, the house has wifi so you can stay connected, but really, you won't want to once you arrive.

The location can’t be beat, just a quick walk in either direction to a beach entrance. The main street in Nosara where you can find some shops and restaurants is also a short walk away. A car is not essential but we rented Quads and a golf cart from Monkey Quads so we could explore a bit further.

Some must’s while you are staying at Makaira Mazara: Lagarta Lodge for sunset and La Luna for a delicious dinner. Beach Dog has a relaxed atmosphere for breakfast (every morning), lunch as well as a casual dinner and don’t forget Il Pepperoni for a Margarita!

Nosara offers something for everyone. Our group did various activities from surf lessons in the mornings and a fishing trip arranged by the property manager to yoga, massages and lounging poolside in the afternoon for those of us interested in relaxing a bit more.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Makaira Mazara, so much so we have already planned another trip!

The perfect place to escape, relax and enjoy!

  • 5 of 5

Makaira Mazara is truly one of a kind - the fact that this was my 3rd visit says it all. I planned a vacation here with friends to get away from the stress of real life - and boy did it deliver! As soon as we got there, a wonderful local cook made us a fabulous dinner (seriously, get her name if you book - she even gave us some quick cooking lessons!) and we immediately felt right at home and ready to let our real lives take a back seat while we enjoyed the beauty that is Nosara.

The house is absolutely perfect. Clean, well appointed, with all of the amenities you could want or need. Our group spent many hours lounging at the pool during the day and sharing a "few" margaritas around the patio table by night.

And Nosara definitely lives up to its billing. Talk about life off the grid! The relaxed and welcoming demeanor of the locals, the variety of activities from surfing to pilates to yoga to massage, the amazing local cuisine (definite musts are the Beach Dog for breakfast and La Luna for dinner) and the best sunsets EVER all made for a magical trip. I couldn't recommend it more. Pure Vida!

Great house & vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Makaira Mazara! The house is well kept and very clean, the pictures don't lie! The owner and local property manager were very easy to work with and get ahold of. The location is perfect, just a short walk to the beach and local restaurants. Rent an ATV to get around town. The welcome packet we received before check-in was so helpful. It was full of information about the Nosara area and all the local places to eat, visit, explore, etc. Thank you for a great week!

Truly Pura Vida

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Makaira Mazara the week after Easter this last April. We flew into Liberia and then took a puddle jumper right into Nosara. After a quick taxi ride, we arrived at Makaira , walked through the gate, up the driveway and into the most serene setting surrounded by beautiful flowers, trees, monkeys, walkway, rancho, fire pit, pool, and inviting rocking chairs.

The house has all the amenities you need to make you feel as though you are in your own home. Each morning we would make coffee and either sit on the rocking chairs, by the pool, or take a walk on the beach. Days were spent reading by the pool , in the shade under the Rancho, or in the hammock. Sometimes we just jumped in the golf cart and drove around Nosara.

The property manager made sure to tell us how to get local Empanadas and Chicharron (fried pork rinds) and local fruits to snack on for lunch. Nights started with a cocktail followed by a walk down to see sunset, and dinner out, or a home made meal using the vegetables we bought from the vegetable truck that cruises through the neighborhood.

The location of Makaira Mazara is perfect! If you make a right out of the driveway, with minutes you can be at the beach. If you go out of the driveway and up the hill, you can soon be at the Bodhi Tree Spa. We treated ourselves to a reiki massage which I highly recommend. A simple left out of the driveway brings you past the Salty Dog Cafe (a great spot for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon cocktail) and into town with charming little shops and markets.

Getting around was easy for us because we rented a golf cart. We drove the cart to Playa Garza to go fishing. We caught Tuna and Mahi Mahi, and brought it to a local restaurant where they grilled the Tuna, and made a Tuna/Mahi Carpaccio. It must be said that I am not a huge fan of eating fish, however, I ate both the Tuna and the Mahi and could not get enough! So so fresh and absolutely delicious! I can't wait to go back for more!!

I will definitely be going back to Makaira Mazara~truly Pura Vida!

Best introduction to Costa Rica we could ask for!

  • 5 of 5

We are so extremely happy to have stayed at Makaira for our first trip to Costa Rica. All of our questions were answered either personally by the owner or through a very complete welcome guide that was available prior to our visit. We can't think of a single detail that wasn't covered. We were greeted upon arrival by a wonderful property manager who also served as a great source of information on local dining and activities. Fishing trips for the boys were set up in advance, 2 mornings and 2 afternoons, and the fresh fish dinners kept us eating on the back patio near the pool most nights! The few nights we went out were also enjoyable, most within walking distance. Beach was a short walk down the road, sunsets to die for. Unit was more than we needed with the three bedrooms and 2 baths in the main house, outdoor shower and fire pit were cool extras. We were there in dry season, so happy we had the option of a car we rented, although we really only used for grocery shopping in Nosara and one dinner that wasn't local. The Jungle Cart (golf cart) was sufficient for most all transportation. As others have mentioned, the unit was clean, safe (security system, gates, safe for valuables), and conveniently located. Can't say enough and we'd definitely stay again on a future visit. In fact, the photo of the pool area at Makaira is my current phone and tablet screen saver!

Awaken to the sounds of surf, howler monkeys and tropical birds. Watch the sun set across the Pacific. A few minute walk to unspoiled and desolate beaches, world renowned surf breaks, protected from development by nearby Ostional Refuge where 100,000 turtles may lay their eggs in a single evening. The small rural village of Nosara has a friendly population of Costa Ricans, Americans, Canadians and Europeans supporting excellent restaurants, hotels and shops.

When people talk about Nosara they usually mean Playa Guiones. Nosara has become a generic term for the area and is in fact a small town 20 minutes drive away. A picturesque collection of restaurants and shops make up Playa Guiones. The main beach is wide and flat and the water is warm all year round. The crowds are minimal here, even at the busiest times of year. Apart from lazy hazy beach type activities you can also go on a jungle canopy tour, take a yoga class, charter a fishing boat, horse riding along the beach at sunset, hike to waterfalls, take private Spanish lessons, go exploring in the jungle on an ATV and finish it all off with a massage at the Tica Massage.
