Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

This two bedroom, two and a half bath carriage house which sleeps four is 1100 square feet of English Country charm tucked into the woods behind Hamanassett Bed and Breakfast on a seven acre Brandywine Valley estate. It is ideal for those traveling with children age 6 and up or dogs or those who just want a little more privacy. Please note when you are looking at rates we have two different rates depending on if you are booking the house with 1 bedroom and 1 bath or both bedrooms and baths. If you book and pay for one bedroom and bath the king bedroom and large bath will be available; the second bedroom and bath will be closed off.

First floor has a large fully stocked and equipped kitchen, right down to cloth napkins and table cloths. The dining room is furnished with a large dining table. The living room is furnished with a sofa, two wing back chairs, and a corner unit which holds the TV with DVD player, expanded cable, and fireplace. Although not a real wood burning fireplace, it fools the most discerning eyes and offers all the ambiance and romance of a fire (with or without the heat so can be used year round) without the muss and fuss. There is also a powder room and a laundry area with full-size washer and dryer just off the kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped with full size appliances as well as microwave oven and dishwasher. All kitchen utensils as well as dishes, glasses, and wine glasses are provided. We live on the property so if you have a special need that we missed, just ask us.

Upstairs you will find two bedrooms. The front bedroom has a queen bed with lace canopy and a private hall bath. The back bedroom has a king bed with a huge private en-suite bathroom which has a claw foot slipper tub and separate large walk in shower. Some DVD movies are provided in the carriage house. There is a user friendly front porch where you can rock away your stresses and there is also a gas barbecue and outside table and chairs. We also offer free Wifi throughout the property. Smoking is permitted outside only.

The back yard is fenced so your four legged friend can enjoy the property as well. Only a quarter mile away is Darlington Walking trail where walks of four to five miles can be taken. We are also near all the major Brandywine Valley attractions such as Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, Brandywine River Museum (Wyeth museum), Nemours, Hagley Museum, and the Barnes Foundation. Ridley Creek Park is a short 10 minute drive. Philadelphia is only 35 minutes away or you can easily do a day trip to Lancaster County which is only 1 hour west of us. Wilmington, De. is approximately 20-25 minutes.

Carriage House - Shabby, Not Chic

  • 2 of 5

WE rented the Carriage House for a week in mid October, 2017.We opted for the "self catering" option to prepare all our own meals, and not eat breakfast at the B&B or have Inn privileges.

We got to the house earlier than our check in time, after a long drive. We are seasoned travelers, and had no expectation of checking in early.

The inn owners were downright surly in their behavior towards us. We stopped only to ask for a recommendation for lunch, and where a local market was so we could stock up for the week.

The Carriage House exterior is in very poor condition, paint peeling all over the place. The inside was also quite shabby, with deep gouges in the woodwork and walls, with no apparent attempt to fix them.

It was very warm when we arrives, and there is only one room window AC for the entire downstairs, totally not adequate. The lighting in the living room was totally inadequate. The light bulbs in the two lamps had the lowest possible wattage in them. You could not even read with the lighting provided. We bought new light bulbs the following day to allow us to read with. I am all for conserving energy, but this was ridiculous.

The kitchen is totally outdated, with no counter space to prepare anything. It was also missing a table that was shown in the pictures describing the house.

The ceiling fans in all the rooms were filthy and covered with grime and dust.

The host was also very surly towards us when we inadvertently hit a button on the remote which turned to cable off, and we called about how to fix it. He came down to the Carriage House and severely admonished us. Then, despite it being at least 70 degrees out, and without asking us, turned on the electric fireplace, which we had no use for.

This property is was shabbier than the photos you see online. If you are a "self catering" guest, these innkeepers just want to take your money and then have nothing to do with you.

They told us just to find the key in the door, and basically "don't bother us."

You will be disappointed if you rent this property.

Owner's Response: Good grief anyone reading this is going to expect Gordon's Ramsay from Hotel Hell to show up. Fortunately VRBO gives guests the forum to say what they want and we have the opportunity to respond. Our English Country house may not be for everyone but we have guests who return to it year after year . We always appreciate constructive criticism. I checked the fans and was horrified to see that she was absolutely right. They are now spotlessly clean. The house sits on the grounds of our B&B so had she called while here this could have been taken care of immediately. Same with the light bulbs which have been replaced with 100W. I was not surly or rude when they showed up before noon when we state check in begins at 3. I tried to explain that the cleaners were in the house now getting it ready and suggested they go to lunch and when they returned the house would be ready and they could go directly to it. They became aggressive toward me and demanded to be let in and for me to answer their questions, all of which had been answered in the confirmation letter they received and in the guest book in the house. As for grocery stores, they passed one one their way to us. Re the TV situation, when she called I explained to her that she had probably changed the channel with the TV remote rather than the Comcast remote and to put the TV channel back to channel 4. She refused to try that so my husband went down and changed it back for her. Thinking he was being considerate, he also picked up the remote for the fireplace to show them how that worked. If they didn't want it on (you can have ambiance without heat) one click would have turned it off. We had people all summer and the AC upstairs and down was adequate even during the hottest months. I have no doubt there are nicks and chips in the woodwork from guests carrying luggage in and out all year. Maintenance is done every January and February, our slowest months. However, the house is not shabby. As a member of Select Registry we are routinely inspected. I'm perplexed by her statement re all we want is your money. She booked a self catered vacation rental. Unless there is a problem, I'm not sure what she was expecting from us. It seems this booking got off to a bad start from the beginning and resulted from unreal expectations. Sorry we didn't meet yours. The Brandywine Valley is a beautiful place and hopefully you'll return and find an accommodation that better fits your needs.

Delightful Early Fall Week

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, plus our dog, enjoyed a wonderful week at the Meadow Cottage in early fall. The Cottage was comfortable and well equipped for everything we needed for a week's stay. We loved the quiet spot looking out and visiting with the neighbor's friendly horses. The Inn owners answered all of our questions ahead of time and offered suggestions for dining out and other area attractions. The location in a residential area was peaceful, yet convenient to shopping areas and major highways.

Ultimate retreat

The owners are most accommodating and the location and property are great. Pictures and description are accurate. This provided the perfect solution for us, visiting in an area that we were familiar with, and giving us the flexibility we needed.
