Our vacation to the Outer Banks was very enjoyable. Weather was good and your place fit the bill. By the way thank you for arranging for some porpoises to come by in the morning to entertain us. It was much appreciated.

A great vacation house!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation at this beautiful oceanfront home. The views were spectacular; sunrises, dolphins, and the waves upon the beach! All enjoyed from the wide, expansive decks. Steps from the ocean, and nestled in the quiet Sanderling development, we had plenty of room on the wide, clean beach for sunbathing, games, and enjoying the waves.

The house was clean and well equipped. Four lower level bedrooms, and one on the upper level accomadated our group perfectly. The house has a rustic charm but with many modern amenities. Wide pine wood floors and notty pine walls add to the cozy, beachy feel.

We already look forward to our next stay and would recommend it highly for a relaxing family vacation.

Our Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We discovered "Sentimental Journey" 10 years ago and have made it our annual OBX home to stay in. We've made this trip with adult children, with grandchildren, and by ourselves. Have LOVED the home and setting every time. We find the home to always be warm, welcoming, and cozy. The ocean view is beyond description. We do travel up and down OBX, and squeeze in a round or two of golf, but our favorite thing is simply chillaxing at the house and on the beach. The best days involve an early morning run, fixing breakfast in, sharing coffee on the beach, shelling, a beach nap, more shelling, and eventually sharing some wine. Most of our best future planning has been accomplished at this setting. Sentimental Journey and the OBX experience is a non-negotiable part of our lives! We give this place a 5 star rating for its charm and coziness and would highly recommend it to everybody.

Old, needs updating

  • 2 of 5

Views are lovely. House is old. Torn screens, missing shutter in bunk room meaning kids were up with the sun, spiders and webs everywhere outside, bedroom level is dark, all windows were so very dirty, we awoke every morning thinking it was rainy/ cloudy every day. Owners provided no cleaning supplies so we couldn't even clean the place ourselves! Renters beware. Rental agency apologized but that didn't save our vacation.

Owner's Response: We greatly value the input of our guests. We are certainly sorry that our property did not live up to your expectations. The house is approximately 35 years old, so it does not have some of "the bells and whistles" that might be expected from newer houses, such as those in Pine Island. The age and condition of our property is typical of the properties in Duck and Sanderling. We use Outer Banks Blue as our rental company and they are one of the best on all of the Outer Banks. They are quite responsive to the concerns of our guests. Our property is rented from April through October every year with many guests returning year after year. ( As is noted in prior reviews.) Our house is described as "comfortable" by most guests and "one of the best values on the beach", with "awesome" views of the ocean. As far as spider webs outside the house, guilty as charged. That is the price one pays for being able to "commune" with the beach.

Sentimental journey

  • 5 of 5

This was our first family trip to the ocean and it was great. The grandkids had the time of their lives and the adults had a well deserved break from the real world. This house was very spacious, clean and just plan nice. Loved the decks to watch the ocean and the sunrises. It was so relaxing to hear the waves all week. The only thing wrong but not a big deal was it was suppose to have four bikes according to rental information which is one reason why I booked this place cause of the kids. I was told it wasn't. I checked my phone app again and it does say it has four bikes. Like I said no big deal cause the kids found plenty of things to do. Over all it was a great place to stay and if we decide to come back we will defiently try to get this place again

Thanks for a great place to stay

Memorable Summer Vacation - Sentimental Journey

  • 5 of 5

This house is a wonderful find! It is spacious with an unbelieveable view. It has a great layout. We spent most of the time on the deck and in the family room which opens up to the kitchen. If you want some alone time, the wrap around deck outside the bedrooms is a great place to chill.

Although there are many restaurants in the area, we preferred to cook in and watch the dolphins swim by as we ate dinner. The kitchen is well equipped. The place was clean upon arrival and easy to keep clean since there was an awesome outdoor shower which you pass on your way from the house to the beach.

While we were here we went deep sea fishing and crabbing and did quite a bit of biking. Because the house is RIGHT on the beach, my favorite part was walking out the door and sitting on the beach, surfing the waves and building sand castles with the kids.

I would highly recommend this property to a family or a group of friends that wants a great summer memory.

Great views but with problem areas

  • 3 of 5

Good things:

The views were amazing. Private beach access and Great room were wonderful. Appreciated having linens and towels provided. Pack-n-play in great shape. Kitchen counter was clean. Loved using the Sanderling pool.

Problem areas:

- The house is in serious need of deep cleaning. Dust build-up, grime and cobwebs abound. On the refrigerator is a list of what the cleaning people should clean - just surfaces/basic cleaning. They don't touch deck areas, which have LOTS of cobwebs.

- Grill was extremely dirty, out of propane and had cobwebs on handles.

- On the VRBO site, there is a porch swing on lower deck and screened-in porch, neither of which are there.

- Large amount of rusted out/broken beach gear on the parking level which is dangerous and should be thrown away. Outdoor shower was completely dirty, with debris covering the ground, and more cobwebs.

- First morning, there were TONS of small dead bugs covering everything in the Great room (holes in screens?)

Safety concerns:

- Upper level deck is in extremely bad shape and needs to be replaced. Specifically: 1.) rail was decaying and ready to fall off the deck, 2.) gate leading to the stairs had come off of its hinges, and 3.) stairs leading from the upper to lower deck had detached from the house making it extremely dangerous. We called OBB, who added two brackets and did a quick fix on the gate.

- Upper level deck has a huge gap under the built-in seat, which is a fall hazard to any small child/small animal.

I sent the above items to the owner. In short, she said that the cleaning crew has 4 hours to clean, they do their best, the owners are pleased, the house is rented constantly (with many return guests) so that says something. "Spiders and cobwebs are just a reality at the beach," she said. She would re-evaluate the stairs/porch in the off-season. My interpretation is not much, if anything, will be resolved. Given this, I felt it was important to share this information with future renters.

Owner's Response: We are grateful for any guest providing insights into how we can best provide a relaxing and pleasant vacation for our renters. That includes the comment of the above review. We appreciate the positive observations that were mentioned. More importantly, we would like to respond to the concerns that were voiced: 1) The house was in need of a deep clean - We have worked with a wonderful management company for several years. We believe that they are the best in the Outer Banks, and we rarely have complaints about the cleanliness of the house. A deep clean is performed at the beginning of each rental season. As was pointed out to the guest, our house is one of the most popular in the area. It rents consistently from April through October. Many guests love the house and return year after year. Given a strong rental history, the cleaners do an excellent job preparing the house for each guest. (As an aside, we were just at the house and found it quite clean). 2) It is true that the porch swing was removed. It was old and we thought it unsafe. It was replaced with a hammock. This was not meant to mislead our guests and will be changed on the website. 3) Rusty beach chairs – These have been replaced. The salt air is tough on furniture, bikes, etc. All chairs are replaced and all deck furniture replaced or repainted at least once a year. 4) Gas grill was not clean – This was newly purchased this spring and while has shown some wear, was fully functional. 5) Concern about the safety of the deck railing and stairs – We had $35,000 of renovations performed this past offseason by a professional and highly respectable contractor. We specifically asked if there were any structural issues and we were assured that there were not. None the less, the front railing, while safe, was worn, and has been completely replaced over the past week. 6) Spiders and cobwebs - Guilty as charged. With all due respect to our guests, living at the ocean is partly about interacting with nature. We cannot prevent nature from doing what nature does on the decks and by the ocean. Having just been at the property for the past two weeks, we have noted no problems with bugs in the house. We take our commitment to provide a memorable getaway for each guest very seriously. In our email to the above guest, we said we would address their concerns in a timely fashion. We received their email in early August. We believe we have best addressed those concerns.
