About Dawn Phillips

Jake and I are high school sweethearts and Daja' View Farm is the farm my Parents and Grandparents started back in 1950's. We are honoring our roots and sharing a past of the rural area we grew up in! We live next door and love meeting new friends!

Dawn Phillips purchased this house in 2014

Why Dawn Phillips chose Heartland

Relaxed, rural atmosphere for a family stay without being cramped in a hotel room.

What makes this house unique

As Miranda Lambert's song says in her country song....'This is the home that built me'! I grew up here and live next door on the farm! Deep roots! My Mom, Millie passed away in May 2014 and her vision of the house was to share with families for farm stays. It's unique and a wonderful property for family fun!

Millie's Pad

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful visit to country/farm life at Millie's Pad, but we were still very convenient to Wake Forest and Raleigh. I grew up in the area but have not lived there for many years and this was very reminiscent of all the wonderful things that I remember about living in the area. The comfortable, spacious house was well equipped. All the animals but especially the chickens were delightful. Dawn and Jake were welcoming and friendly and took very good care of us even providing an arrangement of beautiful home grown flowers.

A very special place to hang your hat when traveling in the area!

Millie's Pad

  • 5 of 5

Millie's Pad was wonderful. We are from the Chicago area needing a 16 day stay for family coming into the Raleigh area for our daughter's wedding. The house was very comfortable for 6 adults and 4 dogs we felt very much at home. The farm atmosphere was a perfect setting and we made friends with Lulu and Cecil (the donkeys) right away. We were able to walk to the pond and feed the fish and turtles while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Dawn and Jake were very gracious and friendly. They made us feel a part of the family and Sadie always greeted us with a wagging tail. We absolutely loved the area, home, and neighbors (Dawn and Jake). We will most definitely return to the farm for our next visit to the Raleigh area. We will also be recommending Millie's Pad to our friends and family that plan to visit the Raleigh area.

Not as advertised

  • 1 of 5

We needed a place to stay for a month due to damage to our home. Spoke with owner on phone told her ages of our children and breed of dog. Seemed great for our four year old to wake up to farm animals every morning. Advertised as a farm setting property for families. The house sits very close to a highly traveled road with speeds in excess of 45mph. The farm is behind the home a bit. If you have children that are under 7 and mobile not a good idea. There is a fence but it is easily opened and not flush. Small house dogs would be OK, anything larger that barks is intimidating to egg laying chickens and upsets the owners. Owners live on site and watch everything you do. Property is older, clean but there is a flea problem. After a week my clothes smelled as the house does, closed up and musty. We bought scented candles to help. After one day, I took my Sheppard to a friend in VA to avoid issues. By the end of the first week, our four year old got out of the fence headed to the animals. The owner, knowing a small child was on property left a running unattended pickup with the door open. The owner was furious that he climbed in. I was furious the truck was left running with the door open. Needless to say a month long stay turned into a week and we were asked to leave because the wife said "I can't deal with children". The owner having been paid in advance by the insurance company knew we had no place to go. So if you want a place to stay where your every move is watched to include what time you leave, what time you return and to be asked what cars are going to be parked at the house, a farm house that is not a farm house but a converted duplex right on a busy road with the owners in your business this for you. But please do not bring small children, for their safety. Very disappointed in this VRBO listing. Have done several for VRBO vacations that have been wonderful, this was a nightmare during a very difficult time for our family.

Owner's Response: I'm sad and amazed as to how this review was portrayed. We have a pest contract and were never informed of an issue or this could have been resolved immediately. As for the child and the truck. The truck was at our home, not Millie's Pad, was NOT running and the doors were not left open. The 4 year old child opened an exterior door of Millie's Pad and no one knew he was gone until I returned him home and explained finding him in a cranked truck with windshield wipers going and at the steering wheel on his knees begging to drive. There are so many things that could have gone wrong or worse with him being unattended wandering around. We should all feel fortunate he was returned safely that day. This is a working farm, we are all over it daily caring for animals lawns, gardens, flowers, chicken coops, eggs, on and on. Yes, we are here daily and most guests enjoy that interaction. This obviously was not a good fit for this family and the insurance company has been refunded the prorated portion of the money we were paid when it didn't work out. I'm just thankful this child wasn't injured and that was my biggest fear! I'm sorry this review didn't explain the scenario as it really took place. We've had many happy guests and hope to have many more!

Millie's Pad

  • 5 of 5

Wherever you travel…it’s the people that count…not the place. Think I’m wrong. Take your next vacation to the Grand Canyon….alone….and see how memorable it is. Many of us experience wonderful adventures in life and all too often we take for granted those with whom we share those adventures. Between careers, chores and family, my wife and I led a fast-paced lifestyle. We came to Millie’s Pad to slow down and prioritize our lives. We came to have a wonderful adventure with our young son. Think Indiana Jones meets Andy Griffith on a John Deere! At Millie’s we thought we would be enamored watching the goats eat green grass in the back pasture…and we were. We thought it would be great for our son to feed hay to Lu Lu, the resident donkey…and it was…but to get her to come to the fence line, you do have to earn her trust. We thought it would be nice to turn off the TV and walk a little more…and we did…including walks down to the pond to feed the fish. We thought it would be a learning experience to watch the tomatoes grow…and it was…including a lesson on how to ground up Eucalyptus and have it smell wonderfully relaxing in an instant. At Millie’s we thought we could learn to raise baby chicks to be big and strong…and we did, including a lesson on how roosters can tell time because they roost up high at sunset every day…just watch Henry, the resident rooster for a lesson on time management. At Millie’s we did all of these things and then some…but the real lessons uncovered themselves in the form of the wonderfully hospitable folks with whom we shared our adventure. Jake and Dawn are about as charmingly southern as it gets. They are look-you-in-the-eye respectful, have old school values, and live with a zest for today…because you never know what tomorrow will throw your way. Jake and Dawn, the proverbial DaJa’ View dynamic duo, started off as our hosts and ended up as family. We all shared a great adventure at Millie’s Pad. We learned to slow down again and enjoy family, chores and then career…this time putting them in the correct order. So thank you to Jake and Dawn for sharing their farm and more importantly their time. With any luck we will see you around Millie’s Pad when we stop by for a visit. Because while we are checking out of Millie’s, rest assured that we’ll be back to feed Lu Lu some hay and make sure the chickens are watered. And thanks to you Miss Millie…for making it all possible…see you around the farm…

Southern charm

  • 5 of 5

The place was great. We had a group of 5 guys in the house for a month. Awesome deck with a fantastic charcoal grill. We cooked out every night. Jake and Dawn were the best hosts you could ever ask for. There's just something about the south.

Thanks guys for a wonderful time.

We'll be back!!

Every day's an adventure at DaJa View Farm!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three weeks at Millie's Pad As guests of Dawn and Jake. The home had everything and more we could have wanted or needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. I cooked in The well-appointed kitchen and we all enjoyed collecting and eating the daily farm fresh eggs. The setting itself is beautiful. We are not sure who enjoyed visiting with the various farm animals-- my daughter, husband and I or our puppy! Peaceful walks on the lovely property were a great way to begin and end our days. If you are animal lovers or just enjoy an escape back to a simpler, slower way of life this is a great spot. We commuted into Raleigh every day and Although it's a bit of a drive -- 20 miles or so -- the roads are good and travel in and out of the city is easy if you're relocating to the area and need interim housing. There are several beautiful state parks and recreation areas nearby if you like hiking. We highly recommend this spot! Finally, our hosts, Dawn and Jake (and Sadie Mae), couldn't have been nicer! You look up "Southern Hospitality" in the dictionary and there's a picture of the three of them!
