(We accept 1-2 day rentals during the week-Mon-Thursday depending on availability, and 3 day rentals for the weekends.) This Beautiful Cabin was taken timber by timber from its original location in Kentucky. IT is new-old construction taking over a year to build. Construction finish date was February 6th 2015. It is a sister cabin to 'Away from it All' vrbo-480579 which many of you have had the pleasure of staying in. The cabin is model pre-civil war construction, it was reconstructed using modern mortar technique and then added on to in its current location. The Cabin sits near the end of a private dirt and gravel road behind a locked gate. Secluded is an understatement. It is situated on a bluff overlooking the Crystal Clear East Fork of the Little River, just below a waterfall which can be heard as soon as you open the door to the car during the wetter seasons. We have an inviting large covered front porch with swing and with a larger open uncovered front porch with ample log furniture where many a book has been read in the fragrant mountain air. The Cabin itself retains all of its antique charm as you enter the Great room with its stone double sided wood-burning fireplace serving the great-room and the Master bedroom both located on the lower floor. The Upstairs is separated by a staircase that leads to a private spacious upper loft that contains three Queen Beds. The Master Bedroom downstairs is off of the Great-room and is garnered with mountain views through perfectly placed casement windows and King Bed, situated perfectly so that you can see the woods and sunrise from the bed. Off of the Master Bedroom is a Beautiful Master bath with stone walk in shower and copper slipper tub, set below a large window overlooking the woods. All sinks were imported from a copper-smith in Mexico. There is a fully functional kitchen with stainless appliances/dishwasher/stove/oven/refrigerator/freezer/microwave and all cooking supplies you will need. One Bathroom Downstairs off of the Great-room with a combo-shower and bath, and a Master Bath off of the Master Bedroom with a Walk in Stone Shower, and Large Copper Slipper Tub. High Efficiency Kenmore Washer and Dryer. 2 Flat Screen TV's up and downstairs with Roku/DVD/WII/Wireless Internet/Dish Network/Central Heat and Air. Land-line phone is present. Cell phone coverage is available from the front porch though spotty at times. I-phones work great through I-message or KIK/any internet messaging service. There is a Master Bedroom that overlooks a large elevated back porch over the river canyon and the river can be heard from an open window. There is a large stone hearth wood burning fireplace in the bedroom. The Bedroom opens onto a cozy screened in porch with a 5 person water therapy spa/hot-tub. There is a charcoal grill on the back porch. There is a fire-pit and picnic area above the river, and a built in gravel trail with staircases to the river itself where depending on the water level you can swim/float/fish/lounge or sit in the crystal clear mountain water. The house is about 10 minutes from Downtown Mentone, AL and 15 minutes from Fort Payne, AL for antique shopping/cultural activity/or fantastic food and music at the Wildflower Cafe or other restaurants. The canyon is also about 10 minutes away, and 5 Minutes from Alpine Boys Camp, Desoto State Park, Desoto Waterfall, and Lake. There are wildflowers galore and wild blueberries and blackberries and plums along the road depending on the season. Wildlife abounds everywhere. The Tin Roof provides a great sound to sleep to when it rains. There is a Fenced yard on the side of house for pets. The Cabin is behind a locked gate on a private road, it is very secluded. We love the outdoors, and this place we have made our weekend getaway and solace. It exudes peacefulness and was designed to be cozy yet modern in every way, so we could truly relax and be surrounded by nature.
Rob Shaffer purchased this cabin in 2015
It is secluded, quiet, private, rustic, modern, comfortable is every possible way.
Every Season is amazing here.
We had a wonderful New Year's Even weekend at Fernweh! It is a very well-kept cabin with all the amenities you need. It is very secluded and right on one of the forks of the river. We woke up to the sound of the river's rushing water which was very nice. I also saw the biggest hawk I have ever seen in my life! It was gorgeous. I just happened to look out the window and it was sitting right there on a branch. Wow! I would definitely recommend it.
My family and I recently returned from a 3 night stay in Fernweh. The cabin is absolutely amazing. What I was most impress with is the fact that when we arrived the cabin was completely spotless. Super clean. The cabin is cozy, comfortable, and my family and I made memories we will cherish forever. The cabin is modern enough to give you everything you need yet the decor and vibe of the cabin still makes you feel like you are "roughing it" and becoming one with nature. :) I literally cannot think of one negative thing to say about this place. Of course, the area surrounding the cabin is as beautiful as the cabin. My family and I hope to make Fernweh an annual family trip. The owner was super nice and easy to deal with and everything was as described. I cannot recommend this place enough.
This cabin was beyond my dreams. A home away from home. It has everything you need. I would highly recommend this cabin. Thank you for sharing your home Mr. Shaffer.
We cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay at Fernweh! My husband and I and our lab, Bear, were able to finally get away for a few days for some peace and quiet! We couldn't have picked a better place to do that very thing! The cabin was absolutely beautiful, decorated beautifully and well maintained. The beds were comfortable, the hot tub perfect. Spent a lot of time just sitting on the screened in porch reading a book. The water level was low, but we did walk down to the river on your beautiful walkway and stood in the middle of where Little River should be, but I'm sure it will be high soon enough! The fenced yard was GREAT!! We have never been able to take Bear with us but one time and it was nothing like your place! This is truly a place to get away from it all with all the modern amenties you could need! Thanks again for this beautiful place!! We enjoyed it so very much and hope to return!!
The cabin was incredible. We loved it and will stay again.
