Super house overlooking Dordogne valley
We are a family of 5 and stayed 2 weeks. The house and particularly the garden and pool are wonderful. We had a relaxing time enjoying the pool and using the BBQ virtually every night. It was wonderful to have a drink a play boules in the gardens as hot air balloons flew over. There is some much to do nearby. We went canoeing twice, hired mountain bikes, visited Lascaux and the local chateaus as well as several trips into Sarlat-la-Canéda which is beautiful and vibrant. We would certainly return to Lithodora in the future
Great place for a family holiday
This home called Lithodora is a most charming country home in a quiet and secluded location. It was the perfect accommodation for our family of 5 adults and 3 grandchildren. The air conditioned bedrooms kept everyone comfortable in spite of the heat wave being experienced while we were there. The beautiful pool was a welcome retreat at the end of hot days of touring the beautiful villages, chateaux and the numerous unique sites of the area. The location gives easy access to so many of these.
The house is a longer distance up the hill behind La Roque Gageac than we expected, to far for a casual walk to town for supplies and fresh pastries in the morning, especially in the heat of July. However, it is only a short drive to Sarlat where everything you may need is available.
The house was well-equipped and if you needed anything, the property manager Alain was quick to respond. It was nice to be welcomed with a bottle of local Rose. The only surprise was to arrive and find that clean bed sheets were provided and folded on the bed but we had to make up all the beds ourselves. We have never had to do this before in rented houses or apartments.
Everyone in our family has a fond memory of the wonderful week spent together at Lithodora. Thanks from all of us.
Thank you for your particularly detailed appéciation and flateuse.
Explanation concerning the provision of sheets and of linen: for example you were 8 persons and there are 9 sleeping arrangements, what will be the sleeping arrangements which you do not want to use?
On the other hand, when there are adults and children, what sharing out in rooms?
This explains it!
Thank you for 5 stars in spite of your remark as which you have explanation.
A fantastic week away with children
We have just returned from a fabulous week at Lithodora. The house is truly beautiful and, being only four of us, we didn't fill it by any stretch but the sense of space is amazing and it would suit multiple families or generations really well. The pool is a really good size with a 2m deep end and was much appreciated because the heat during our stay. As was the air conditioning in three of the bedrooms.
The whole area is beautiful and there is so much to do. We visited markets, canoed on the river, visited Baynac chateau and lazed by the pool. We couldn't have asked for more and very much hope to return in the future.
What a beautiful house in a beautiful setting! Perfect for a large family group.
We have returned from a lovely week in Lithodora. The house was lovely with rustic charm and the kids loved the pool. The property is in walking distance to the village but only for those without any difficulties in mobility as the climb back up was quite steep. Beautiful area with lots of things to do.
There are restaurants and gift shops in the village but we did find we had to drive out for groceries as there was not a bakers or grocery shop in walking distance.
We visited Castelnaud, Sarlat and canoeing down the Dordogne, all highly recommended.
This was our fourth trip to the area and we would definately consider Lithodora on our next one!
Thank you for a lovely stay and to Alain for trying so hard with his English!
Most wonderful hidden gem.
We have just returned from 2weeks at Lithodora.... pure heaven!
We are a family of 6, including a child of 2. This beautiful house offered us everything we needed plus so much more.
We were met by the lovely Alain. He could not have been more welcoming and helpful and was on hand every day( via phone) if we had any problems.
The house itself was huge, so much space and very large bedrooms. It was equipped with everything we needed plus lots of extras.
Outside, the grounds were huge with beautiful views across the valley. We ate all our meals outside under a lovely shaded pergola and enjoyed many meals cooked on the large gas barbecue provided.
The swimming pool was a great size and set in a beautiful area above the house, again with stunning views.
There really is so much about this property that we loved, I cannot possibly cover it all! I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Thank you Hubert and Janine for letting us stay in your wonderful home (and for our bottle of rose chilling in the fridge) but special thanks to Alain for really looking after us!
Merci pour votre appréciation, que j'apprécie!
En effet, nous faisons le maximum pour nos clients, et surtout
Alain est vraiment sensationnel et se met toujours en 4 pour les clients.
Beautiful house with a couple of issues
My family chose this home for our first visit to the Dordogne based on the location and size. We loved all of the room we had for 6. There are indeed 4 bedrooms with their own bathrooms plus an extra WC on the main floor. We were able to cook our meals but could not figure out the oven so did not use. We enjoyed the BBQ on 2 occasions and the kids used the pool every evening.
The road leading to the house took some getting used to as it was a single lane and steep. We had a large van but if you had a smaller vehicle it would be much easier. The town was wonderful and we enjoyed canoeing as well as visiting local caves and chateau.
On to the not so great. We arrived from the US after an overnight flight, cancelled train due to a strike and drive from Bordeaux to discover the house held no bed linens or towels for the bathroom or pool. There is no mention of having to provide your own linen in the advertisement. Although Mr Hubert has English listed as a language he speaks he only corresponded in French a language I do not speak. I was able to get through this with Google translate. His caretaker who met us at arrival spoke no English which was not a problem until we discovered the lack of linens/towels and did not know how we could call him and be understood. We had to purchase towels and slept wrapped in our sweaters. There were not even pillows on some of the beds. For this reason I can not give the house a higher rating.
The house, named Lithodora, lies on the “côte de la Salvie”. It overlooks La Roque-Gageac, a village located 1km away. During the summer you will find almost all the necessary shops. Otherwise, there is Sarlat 11km away with all the commodities of great trademarks. The area has valuable tourist sites like La Roque-Gageac, Domme, Beynac, Cazenac (a stunning medieval castle), Sarlat (the Black Périgord capital where lived Etienne de la Boétie, a friend of Montaigne), the Cadouin abbey, etc.
