With two bedrooms, and a hide-a-bed sofa in the living room, this house is perfect for two, or even two couples, and will sleep six in a pinch. The sunnyside front porch is great for lounging and enjoying Missoula's fresh air, as well as the friendly greetings of neighbors and visitors out for a stroll. The flagstone patio with gas grill in the privacy-fenced back yard is great for outdoor cooking and dining .
Furnishings are a blend of very old and very new, but the overall look and feel of this house is graceful turn-of-the-century (the 19th; it was built in 1900.) Like-new kitchen appliances, HD tv with Roku, great sound system and fastest wireless internet in Missoula are at your 21st century service.
The Orange Street Food Farm, one of Missoula's favorite grocery stores, is four blocks away. A convenience store, boutique clothing shop, restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses, a craft brewery, a whitewater gear/paddleboard and surfboard shop, vintage vinyl record stores, a florist, a movie theater and much more are all within three blocks, An inland surfing wave, movie theaters, bars, live music venues and more are within six blocks. And yet this is a peaceful, quiet place. Miraculous.

About Don Burgess
I'm a writer/editor, my wife is a school librarian. Missoula is our town, but we live and work twenty miles away. We have long planned to move to town after we have both retired (still a year or two out) and started studying the housing market two years ago. We spent several nice spring and summer mornings in 2013 and 2014 bicycling around the older Missoula neighborhoods we favored, admiring the many nifty houses. We knew that nice old homes in Missoula's nice old neighborhoods don't come on the market very often, and when they do, they sell quickly. We fell in love with several, and watched the few that sported For Sale signs get snapped up immediately. We began to think we should buy now and occupy later.

We found a realtor, let her know what we hoped to find, and she called us early in the morning the first day this great old house was listed. We dropped everything and drove in to check it out. The next morning we presented an offer and a few weeks later it was ours. The hard part now is having to wait a while to live in it, but we are happy to make it available to others in the meantime. We prayed that the house would be a blessing to everyone who enters it, and it's been gratifying to see how happy our renters have been with it; they all seem to love it as much as we do, and have taken exceptionally good care of it.
What makes this House unique
Front-porch sitting is a common and favorite way to relax at the end of a summer day in this neighborhood. it almost feels like a southern-states thing, kind of homey and genteel. But the climate and the old maple trees lend it more of a New England small-town atmosphere. The full-time residents have been so friendly and welcoming, even to our summer guests, who haven't been there long and won't be staying long. There are quite a few young families with very small children in the neighborhood, and there is just a general sweetness about it all. Except for one aloof and worried dog down by the corner that sometimes barks and disturbs the peace for a while until someone walks over and reprimands him.

The location is within walking distance to downtown,
restaurants, and the river trail. Highly recommend this
Don't want to say too much
We just spent five weeks in "Zootown's Best..." and, as much as we don't want competition for future stays, we owe it to Don to be honest. The location is perfect, so we were able to totally immerse ourselves in Missoula. We drove up from SoCal but would not have needed a car at all. Don provided the "hands off" helpfulness that allowed it to really be OUR home and yet he was available for everything we needed - which wasn't much. The ideal location gave us access to the river trail (200 yards away), coffee shops, restaurants, hiking, river floating, downtown, the university, the baseball stadium, our gym, our niece, nephew and their two tykes - see that - we've probably already ruined our chances for next summer and haven't even mentioned the house and neighborhood. While it might be a bit cozy for more than four people, the beautiful 'home' was perfect for two of us and our two small dogs.
The leafy property allowed us to stay cool enough during a few 100deg days. The trees combined with the quality of the house to allow a less than robust A/C system to do the job during those hot afternoons. During each of those evenings, the outside temps dropped 35-40degrees, allowing us to open windows for perfect sleeps. We spent mornings and evenings on the porch, enjoying the friendliness of passersby and our neighbors.
We WILL be back!
Perfect for a Missoula get away
Having lived in Missoula for nearly 20 years, we were thrilled to find this home is a gem in the heart of Missoula on our recent visit back to our old stomping grounds. This is a beautifully restored historic home - tastefully decorated and super comfortable. Sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee or having a glass of wine on the back patio, you feel like you are a part of Missoula. Don, the owner was very personable and we enjoyed visiting with him.
The home is within walking distance to all of the great spots in town. We walked our dog on the Clark River trail every morning. The kite un was fully stocked but we never cooked. Why go to the trouble when we could have reakfast at Le Petit (200 steps from the front gate) and Bernice's, or a short walk to Scotty's Table or the Red Bird for dinner.
We hope to be back soon. This will definitely be our home base in Missoula when we visit from now on!!
A beautiful home at a convenient location!
We absolutely loved our stay at this home near the university. The "Hip Strip" was a great neighborhood to set up shop for a weekend exploring Missoula. The house is a short walk to downtown, and very close to coffee shops, great restaurants (grab a slice from Bridge Pizza), and the university (the hike up to the "M" on Mt Sentinel is a must).
Don was very responsive in the days leading up to our trip and helped us out during our stay. The house is very well kept and was very clean! Great wifi connectivity, a beautiful back yard, and a lovely front porch perfect for enjoying a growler from one of the many microbrews in town. The neighborhood is peaceful yet very closely located to everything
If we make another Missoula road trip, we'd love to stay here again!

We had a lovely weekend with family for graduation weekend. We were able to host dinner for 7 one evening and relax as if in our own home. We would definitely book again.
This 116-yr old house is on a quiet street lined with old maple trees, amongst other beautiful old houses in a designated historic neighborhood. It's within walking distance of almost everything that makes Missoula such a fun, vibrant town. The Big Dipper ice cream stand, with its long, sunny day lines of customers, is just down the block and around the corner. The Kettlehouse Brewery, featuring national prize-winning beers, is a stone's throw away. Le Petite Outre, Missoula's best bakery, is even closer.

Check-in is 2:00 pm. Check out at 11:00 am. No smoking. No cats. Dogs may be permitted, on approval, for an additional fee of $5 per night for stays of 28+ nights, $10 for stays of 7-27 nights, and $15 per night for stays of 3-6 nights. Follow use and care instructions for appliances, fixtures and floors. Payment is by credit card through Home Away/VRBO. The maximum number of guests is six, including children. Minimum stay: three nights. Rates include a one-time linen-towel setup, WIFI, TV and utilities. Cancellation (standard VRBO policy): full refund of deposit if booking is canceled 30 days prior to scheduled occupancy. If you must leave before your scheduled departure date, we will refund 20% of the per-night rate for each night of the remainder of your booking. Any reservation obtained under false pretense will be subject to forfeiture of advance payment, deposit and/or rental money, and the party will not be permitted to check in.
